I got it - finally - which seems to confirm my capacity theory.

I got it - finally - which seems to suggest that, unless they have changed something at the other end, the problem is simply one of capacity - the server couldn't handle the load. Impulse could maybe be tweaked to recognise this and report on it better.
Actually I have come to the conclusion that this is just a capacity problem and that the only problem is Impulses inability to identify that and tell you. I got it downloading today without changing any settings so I think its just luck of the draw if you hit the server when its quiet. It'd be nice if Impulse would just say "Sorry, the server is too busy at the moment, please try again later." Or ideally implement some form of queuing system, maybe with some natty muzac playing in the
I have come to the conclusion this is simply a capacity problem. I had to go out today and before I left I thought I'd have another go - without changing a thing - and lo and behold it started downloading. As luck would have it I couldn't leaven my machine on to finish the download so will have to try again tomorrow night.
Yeh! I was meaning SoaSE - although funnily enough I have that other game kicking around somewhere. And by "we have not got the beta yet" - I mean that due to problem with delivering it via Impulse - some of us are still having trouble getting the beta. I know the Beta is available - that's the point.
"Nothing on earth is forcing you to install the beta versions. It can get rough on the bleeding edge. " -- Kris Kwilas, 'Essays on Mind and Matter'
Whilst this is very true, the problem is that it is the delivery mechanism that is going wrong - Impulse - and Impulse is not a beta version. We haven't even got the Beta version of SINs yet.
Yeh - I had to go out and watch some street jazz anyway - much calmer now thanks.
If you are still having problems then you can get back to the 1.05 version, without resorting to the CD, by turning OFF the "Show pre-release versions" from the aforementioned "Orb" menu and then you can install the latest full release. I eventually figured this out after having failed to get he beta after two nights and an entire morning trying - including getting to the "Oh no! I've uninstalled SINs and can't install it again!" stage. P.S. I found the Orb menu cos' I fiddle w
OK, I give up - it is a waste of time. I've spent all morning waiting on this (uninstalling, re-installing, archiving ...) and it's still not happening. I've re-installed 1.05 and tried updating again (saw a post elsewhere saying it might work) and it still doesn't work.
Sorry if I sounded overly angry there - just frustration. I should also point out that I have NOT been left without the game as I have discovered that if I turn OFF the "Show pre-release versions" option I can download and install the full game - which I am now doing. A fact which other may find useful.
I too have followed all the instructions in this post (tried both servers, uninstalled game and uninstalled Impulse, deleted the temporary files, tried old and new download methods, ensured my internet security is all turned off (feel really happy about that one) only to have been left with no game and no patience. When I try using the "New method" impulse just crashes back to desktop! The old method just gives "Download Error". I have previously been updating Object De
I know this is gonna sound stupid (especially if you already know it) - but don't sit with your laptop on your lap. Most laptops are actually built assuming that the underside of the machine is raised above a solid surface by its feet - giving air flow beneath the machine. If you sit with it on your lap it wont have that ventilation and could easily overheat. Similarly, don't sit it on any other soft surface - on a desk or table is best. And keep any vents at the side or rear
Got it - locking Thunderbird to a specific Virtual Desktop causes this. YOU can move it to another desktop and it works fine - as soon as you lock it there is leaves these phantom windows lying around. Workaround found.
Thanks - but it doesn't help. I'm wondering now if it is Stardock Virtual Desktops that is doing it - seems to happen more (or only not sure yet) when I switch desktops. Now trying to figure out how to turn OFF SVD ;)

Oooh - I found out how to move the post myself and that there is a RightClick specific section. OK, you can ignore my venting about XP restores - this issue is directly related to RightClick RightClick Version: 1.25 Build 756 With RightClick loaded my desktop properties misbehaves as described above, as soon as I unload RightClick it works fine.
Well - I'll be a monkeys uncle - I didn't expect that! It's RightClick - works fine without RightClick running. Bit of a bummer really since I really like RightClick. Can this thread be moved to the general Object Desktop forum (since there doesn't seem to be one just for RightClick). Thanks
Oh - and "sfc /scannow" results in repeated requests for the original install CD - and when I shove in the mighty "Recovery CD" it says its not the right one.
Grr! This is really annoying me now. This stupid machine came with an OEM "Recovery CD" instead of a full XP and was pre-loaded with SP2. SP2 doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs so can't be "fixed" or uninstalled and re-installed. The "invisible partition" recovery system has vanished - it's been bugging me ever since I got it - every single boot "Press F10 to repair this system ..." and now that's just vanished into thin air. The so-called recovery CD doesn't of
Butt in all you like - all help appreciated.
More info - I do not have to actually enable a WB skin for this to happen. If I clean boot with "Windows Classic" and then switch to the "Appearance" tab and select one of more themes (but do not Apply of OK them) then go back to "Windows Calssic" close the Desktop proeprties applet and re-open it I get the same error. I have also checked through everything that is loading on startup, not a lot as I keep a clean system, and services and device drivers - nothing untoward in there.<br

Hi, I haven't tracked down the exact circumstances for this or whether it is caused by WindowsBlinds or WindowFX yet (or a combination of both). I often get a phantom Compose window left behind after I send an email from Thunderbird. The window appears to close but if I minimize Thunderbird (from maximized state) there will be this window frame hanging about which cannot be closed and whose contents just copies what was previously on top of it. System Specs: Windows
Hi, I just changed back to the Windows Classic appearance via the Desktop properties Appearance tab (was using a slightly modified "Fly" WindowBlinds skins). Now every time I try to go back to the Appearance tab I get: > An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,0" I then thought I would run WindowBlinds again to see if it cleared the problem - not quite - after running WindowBlinds the Appearance tab will now come up but the Pr
I think you might count this as cheating but ... On a Sinclair programmable calculator, with red 10 or 12 digit LED display and 79 program steps if I remember correctly, a game called "MoonLander". You had to type the program in before playing every time (no permanent storage) and the "game" consisted of typing in thrusts and it would calculate a new height - if you got down to zero without going negative (splat) you won. I got really annoyed cos' I converted it to the schools
