What are you going to name your star?

What are you going to name your star?

Might as well fill this space up with 'useless' topics  ^_^ ;P

So what are you going to name your star and what's the reason for that name (if any) ?

I'm going to name my star 'Emmen'. It's my hometown, lived here all my life and am proud of it even though most Dutch people would call it a dump.

Edit; why is this topic showing up in the General GC3 subforum? I posted it in the GC3 Founders subforum.

I am having a hard time deciding a name for my star. But I think I will have a little time deciding still ;)

Zama, Epirius or Baal. I like Classical and ancient stuff. Fitting names for stars to be named after great battles, hereos, Ancient cities/cultures or even Gods. Not the most original but I like names like these.

Arcathia.

I've used this for City/Star/County names for a few decades now.

I'm going to go with either Jornoel (a mash up of my fiance's first and middle name) or Damues (a mash up of my Grandfather In-law's, who passed on the 22nd, first and last name)

I will probably pick some obscure historical battle reference.

After considering the name a couple of days I have decided to name my star Metatron.

It has several meanings it is a name of an archangel in Judaism/Christianity/Islam  who is the voice of God. It is also the name of a 18th century secret society in Sweden which is why I selected it.

When do we get to name our star? Do we have to go to a special forum and post it there?

Anyway, the name I probably choose will be "Mulvaney".

StarDock said they will let us know when they are ready to take star names and how they are going to go about getting them from us. We just have to wait on them.

Will there be any guidelines about which star names will fit well into the GalCiv universe?  Having never played one of the previous games, I don't have any point of reference for what a star name "should" look like.

You raise a very interesting question, one that got me thinking about how stars have been named in our history. So I took a look at Wikipedia to see what was said there.

Historically (but not in games) only a comparatively few of the stars visible to the naked eye have been given names. Sometimes a single star can have multiple names. Sometimes the same name is used for more than one star. None of this is unusual when you consider that we have been naming them for thousands of years and have only recently been cataloging star names.

While I found that interesting enough to me to post here for others, here is my guess on what names will be acceptable for GC3:

Any name you wish that does not reflect badly on some one, some thing, a belief, a culture, a country, or on the namer (this last one I think sufficiently excludes abusive and/or derogatory language).

I think I'm going to name mine 'Janar' - been a name I use for various characters/entities since my first play of DnD way back in the day.

My star will be named in honor of my fiance.

I am already daydreaming of the day when I will play the game and find the named star. Then I will call her in to see it, seizing the opportunity to romantically explain how it is no mere accident that the game can generate stars with such a name.

Although reading through the rest of this thread, I fear that I may have to deal with many other stars named after women to find the one for MY beloved. This is comforting in its way, though. It shows that at least GalCiv players are getting laid - or at the very least, they have not devolved into completely unfeeling assholes.

I may go for a real scientific approach, something like BWS1989, my initials and birth years as this format is how most stars in the scientific realm are named, letters and number coordinates.  Or  maybe something like Sylvester's Star.  Seems selfish tho.  Id like to name it something where other people would get a kick out of it.  Maybe something like, Chicago, Thanatos, or Balrog. Didn't think it would be so hard. How about "Justin beiber suxx!!!1"

Don't you think that is sufficiently derogatory to be rejected???

Tiberius, based on my wife's cat (which in turn was obviously based on Kirk).

I'd name it based on my current town, but it'd sound like it was Stardock's doing.

When my great-great grandfather immigrated to the US, they Americanized his name. However, our German/Swiss family name is known by me (and has a coat of arms: A large lion standing on top of three smaller lions). So the planet name will need to be our old family name: Zurbrugg (pronounced Zer - Broog). Besides, in my opinion, it sounds very cool...

To everyone who chose their wife, daughter, etc.  Keep in mind that everyone out there playing the game will be "conquering" your loved one.  And to the person who chose Nirn, if the planet has that irritating noise when you go to it, I am going to blow it up.
