Empire thread --> The Gerontocracy

The Gerontocracy is here, and the universe will never be the same.

This empire is intended for players over the age of 30, hence the name of the empire. Judging by other threads, that means about 89% of us. For that other 11%, my advice is to hurry up and get older; in the meantime, though, there are plenty of other empires to join, even if they're not nearly as awesome as we are.

Hi otilla2.

This empire is intended for older players. If you are over 35 and would like to join, you are very welcome to.

Are the old folks already fading away, or is it just some combo of the late-year holidays and the TA beta? I hope I'm not the only one watching his scores age and wondering when I'll get around to finishing another good Meta game.

I'm also really unhappy to find myself paying attention to the empire rankings and wondering whether the war-win fans in our crew will ever be able to drag us into the top 5. I'd try harder to do my part, but the game has no respect for folks who don't want to kill all their neighbors ;-)

Hi GW... I'm still here, but playing the game much less than I used to. I have played a few beta games, but have been finding them to be more frustrating than fun. Think I just need a bit of a break...

Hi GW, yes it's too bad the game doesn't reward players by giving them a better score over all for wins other than through military conquest. (:(

I've just recently embraced DA and I am slowly getting into that expansion.
I admit I'm a tad guilty of trying to post metaverse games to three (but mainly two) empires... so I may be spreading myself a bit too thin I suppose as this takes some time to complete a game for each empire.

Hi ghost.
Are you finding that by playing a metaverse league game every month helps to keep your interest going?
I think I'm in the same boat as ghostwes. Is that you over by the starboard gun'l, ghost? Honestly, at the moment, the MVL is the only thing that keeps me completing games at all. Other than those, I am definitely taking a break for the time being.

The league can be fun, sure. You may recall that the league was my idea to start with, actually, though the idea has morphed quite a bit since then. The goal I envisioned, ie. making empire scores more meaningful has been accomplished somewhat, I suppose, but is still hampered by the actual scoring system itself being a bit off-balance IMHO. I am hoping that this is something that will be addressed in TA, especially with the introduction of special tournament games, which I think will be a great addition to an otherwise great game.

Hey All, I am finding myself in the same boat. The Metaverse League is keeping me interested. I have been beta testing TA and that has kept me interested but the frustration can sometimes get to me.

Hi there,

Just joined this empire - thanks for letting me in! I'm 38, which doesn't make me too much of an old geezer but I at least qualify as being middle aged! I've been playing the game for a while but only recently ventured onto the metaverse.

I was wondering if there was anywhere else that you guys hang out since this thread seems to have been dead for the last few months.

Several of us post regularly in other threads and I think many on our roster are a bit more involved with the Metaverse League than with our humble empire (hopefully they'll remember duty at some point and not leave the rank maintenance to just a few of us).

I did at least one Gerontocracy-related thread when I demanded that Mumblefratz admit he was one of us, but he's such an exemplary curmudgeon that he would not change his allegience. I heartily encourage you to get this geezer gang talking amongst ourselves a bit more, in this thread or elsewhere.

Welcome jpeoples.

I submitted a couple of games earlier this month for The Gerontocracy.

I'm still wet behind the ears as far as playing the Dark Avatar expansion goes, but with what little time I have for gaming, I think I'm getting the feel for it now.
I'm not too happy with my scores though... but heh, I still enjoy the game immensely (lot's to learn which makes it fun).

I have a large game in the works presently, and if all goes well, I should be posting this for us soon.

I heartily encourage you to get this geezer gang talking amongst ourselves a bit more, in this thread or elsewhere.

... sounds good GW ;)

Welcome, jpeoples.

I've been playing a lot, but have also been abandoning a lot of lost games, so it's not really evident from my profile. I keep trying to beat different difficulty levels with different strategies, and more often than not, failing completely. Ah well, still learning things, and not getting bored, so it's all good, and I never claimed to be any good at this game.

I'm 37 by the way.

Yeah, it has been kind of quiet lately here, hasn't it? Sorry about that.

I can't seem to bring up anyone else's metaverse profile -- when I try it brings up mine instead. Since I don't know the name of your character, jpeoples, I am unable to send an invite to join. I did a search for characters with that name, but there don't appear to be any.

That function seems to have been broken for a while. jpeoples' character name is Statler...Kzinti senses can scent things that are hidden. ;)

Ah, thanks KP. It seems someone already added his character, in any case.

Thanks guys. I'll continue posting games here for now. I'm gradually increasing the difficulty and galaxy size with each game until I get spanked by the AI. I think I'm about to win with a large galaxy on "tough" so will move to "painful" next. I've also been playing a bit with the TA beta though I think I might put that on hold for now until the actual release.

That implies someone knows how to use their Senatorial powers. If that's so, please share your knowledge. The Metaverse UI has me stumped.

Possibly in the "edit my empire" menu it is set to "open", rather than moderated, invite only, or whatever else is listed, but I'm not sure it would grant automatic Senator status though.

Since getting on the DA bandwagon, I've found that my success rate for winning games is much lower than when I was playing DL, so I have opted not to submit a losing score to the Metaverse when that happens (ego, pride, etc.)

In fact I had to initially drop down a level or two in difficulty from what I was used to.

Including the Korath as an opponent in any game IMHO is asking for trouble unless you can wipe them out early in the game.
My last game was pretty much over before it began, with the Korath possessing huge planetary bonus tiles (300%,700%...) and most of the other opponents including myself had nothing better than a few 100% tiles here and there. Their military was up and running in no time... pumping out spore ships a dime a dozen it seemed.
I was playing as the Drath whereby I had everyone going to war with the Korath, but to no avail.

Oh well, it's all fun, but can be frustrating at times. X-(

I don't know, really... I've only ever been an emperor and not a senator, so I'm not sure what they are able to do. I think, maybe, you can confirm someone's acceptance if they apply to be a member without me inviting them? Not really sure. In any case, welcome aboard, sir, happy to have you, and anyone else who would like to join, please do speak up so I can add you.

I have also had to lower my difficulty of late, going from Crippling to Painful. What bothers me is that I don't really know *why* the game has gotten more difficult for me. I don't think the most recent patches to DA that did it (when was the last one, anyway?) I wonder if it might be the galaxy settings I'm using that are upping the difficulty. Or maybe I'm just getting stupider in my old age. Hrrm.

Of course, I did get in a single suicidal tech victory, which was fairly easy since I got the win before encountering any other races (yay corner start!) It felt like cheating, though. And, anyway, tech victories just aren't all that satisfying; it's like winning a football match because the other team's van broke down getting there, know what I mean?

In an open empire, peeople can join freely without any acceptance process. I don't believe Senators have any functional capability other than accepting members in empires that arent "open". I think they should have made being a Senator a little more interesting, like at least letting them send invites to the empire.

Is it worth adding that banner thing to your posts? I don't see too many people doing it and I have no idea how to. Will the banner update as your Altmeta info changes or is it more like pasted there?

And out of curiosity, which ranking do most peiople use as the "official" rankins? I know the regulat Metaverse is offical-er, but what do the players use? (Cause i'm #2 in this empire right now in the Altmeta) lol

thanks.

I look at both the MV and AltMeta. They are both useful measurements of achievement, for different reasons.

You can insert the banners just like any other picture, and if you go the AltMeta it will give you the links for your character's banners. I dont how they update.

from the Kzinti thread:

I had to keep resizing it, so I may go back later and fix it up some more.

And yeah, I could pass on the cigar smoke too but something that can be looked into. I wouldn't even mind reviving the Metaverse Council to be honest, but I think some overall would definitely be in order; I think, and i must state as a Non-Councilor, this is strictly opinion, but they got inundated by the bureaucracy of it all.

I do know that I personally feel that any form of the MVC, old, new, or re-imagined, should be public.

The only still active MVC councilors that I know of personally, are Neilo, Mumblefratz, and Wyndstar. I think MarshallONeil may have been one too.

Here are some of my more serious proposals:

Coordinating with Wyndstar and the Devs with the Tourneys. Much like the original idea by Ghostwes last summer (that evolved into the MVL) since its all the exact same scenario played by everyone, we could easily have Inter-Empire Games.

Promoting the MVL. And finally, really trying to see what obstacles stand in the way of integrating into the AltMeta.

Supporting and increasing the MV Empires both new and old, such as having their respective emperors and most vocal members being able to communicate in a public central locale to spur new ideas, MV issues, and friendly taunting. The OP would list each empire and a very brief summary. Basically, one thread that links to all the empires main pages.

Reinstating and expanding on the link between the Player and the Developers. The MVC had/has this but due to almost a year's worth on inactivity on the part of the MVC, something that could be reinstated and expanded upon.
