How does that work? I can't see anything in the Metaverse UI (High Scores, Gerontocracy) that looks like a way to invite folks.

I have no new recruit in mind. This is just a point of curiousity.

I am retiring from the world stage to my own little empire - the MV League. This is not due to any dissatisfaction with one of the most deserving empires in the galaxy - yes I am talking about the big G here - but because I think an empire is needed to accomodate all those secondary characters from metaverse league games and I cannot but be an emperor in an empire that does not include my own characters as well.
It is a dreary and a dreaded farewell.

Well, I'll admit I'm not the most consistent South Park follower out there, but this seems an uncharacteristically disloyal statment for a Butters-like entity. If thebutterfly is fundamentally based on the butterfly types in Vernor Vinge's novels, I guess I might understand on account of them being wretchedly evil 'tards and all that.

Hey, a few months ago there were a couple of threads that asked how old forum readers were. There were hundreds of responses. Perhaps we could cull through those threads for many names of decrepitude to send invites to.

I remember the evil butterflies in A Fire Upon the Deep. Great book that! Didn't really get into Rainbows End, though, and was very surprised to see it get the Hugo. I was rooting for Glasshouse.

Butterfly. I have left my main character with the Gerotocracy and am currently playing as Cruella with the Evil Ones.
It is just a matter of selecting which character to submit the game with when you set up a Metaverse game.

Actually, you are quite right. I think I will return with the_butter_flies when this MV league round is over (mid October) - then I can make a new character specially dedicated to MV League games. Right now I have to leave the_butter_flies there, because of my league game which is under that character's name. It seemes odd to me at first not to have all my characters in my own empire - but it actually makes sense to split them up.
Still I think it's easier to verify the MVL scores in one empire only. That's why I sent an invite for your secondary character.

I signed my league character incitatus up to the league empire.

I did the same with my original empire, the HCH. My old character remains there while my newest character plays for the Tyranny. Meanwhile, I brought my oldest character out of retirement to play my League games for the Gerontocracy.

Okay the MV league round is over - this means I send the_butter_flies (my default character) back to you. Feels good to be back!

btw: a link on the empire site to this thread or the core would be nice. Some publicity too. After all, we are rather close to rsing from rank 7 to rank 5.

You know, I just looked at the high scores, and it's weird... I don't recognize anybody in the Overmind, nor have I ever heard of it, yet somehow they shot past us at some point. Meanwhile, the Kzinti has only one member that I've seen post in the forums, and they shot past us as well. Who are all these people? Not complaining, mind you... just curious.

Some empires (actually most top ten empires) have a link from their empire member ranking site to some other site (usually the galactic core) - it seems there is a possibility to register your empire there and get a special access to the forum for free. I am not sure why these empires need the galactic core forum - but if you can have it for free, maybe we can come up with a use (or it's just a nice status symbol to have - like the Monet painiting you hang in your living room - it has no real function, it is not a good investment, but it is nice to look at and makes your business friends' eyes pop.)

I've been wondering about the other empires growth too. But we have been growing as well - and quite a few of our empire's members are people I highly respect - Drrider for example may not have scored big yet, but his advice is as sound as it gets.

I haven't really seen the need to go outside of this forum for the Gerontocracy, frankly. Empires, as a concept, don't really amount to much, and everything we need to say is just as easily said here where all can read it. In fact, I wonder if we might lose people, or not attract as many new players, if we moved this conversation somewhere else. How would people new to the game know that this empire is active and welcoming new members?

But that's just my opinion... if people would like to use an additional forum, then I certainly have no problem with that.

I do check the Core for my MVL team, but people rarely post. There is, perhaps, more of a need for it there, as teams can discuss our secret strategies and stuff. Though that really hasn't happened, at least in the Blade Runners...

The Core also hosts voting and private deliberations for the MVC. It isn't free, it just doesn't demand that you pay to get a login--Drengin and some associates devote time and money to keeping it up. Somewhere in the Core interface you can see whether a user has made a non-anonymous donation. Mumblefratz has helped out with cash, for example.

My former empire (Standards) had a private area over there, but we never found much use for it. If folks think we need more than this thread (which I think we could if the regular posting set gets large enough), I vote for starting a sibling thread here at the official forums. Possibilites include "So you want to be a Gerontocrat" (recruiting) "Trust us, we're *old*" (strategy talk) or "Curmudgeons' Gripe-off" (venting).
