The original intention for the two libraries was to separate skins designed for Windows XP from the old style skins made with Windows 98/2000 in mind. I don't know if everyone realizes that when they submit skins to those libraries though. As I recall, the first version of WindowBlinds that had full support for XP was WindowBlinds 3.0. So the WindowBlinds XP library on DeviantArt should contain skins for WB3 and above.

This is how I do it.... Start with your image on a completely transparent background. Go to Image -> Mode -> Indexed to set it to indexed color (set the Matte to none if it isn't already). That will eliminate any antialised edges. Then switch the image mode back to RGB, add a new layer in the background, and fill it with magic pink. Then, save that as a BMP.

What skin element are you making? Perhaps it's one that doesn't support transparency? FYI, if you import a transparent PNG or use a transparent TGA, you need to make sure both the transparency and translucency boxes are checked. For a BMP with magic pink, only check the transparency box.

I'm not clear on what the first question actually is. What exactly isn't working right? Does your glyph image have the same number of states as the undock/logoff/shutdown button image (9 states)? The taskbar height is determined by the top and bottom content margins on your task button and quicklaunch buttons. Increase the content margins, and the taskbar get taller, etc. That's not likely to be the problem with your Start button overlay though. Try adjusting your overaly image sizing

In SkinStudio, go to Miscellaneous -> Colors in the tree on the left. Then, in the attributes list on the right, find Menus -> Menu Hilighted background (XP Only). This color applies to all highlights on the Start Menu, although the Places, Programs, and Logoff/Shutdown button highlights can be overridden with a highlight background image.
