Open discussion, GITMO

OK NOW WHAT?

I have been sidelined with the flu and since I have no immune system, anything I catch lays me low.

The question I want to ask is.

OK we close gitmo, now what?

Lets try to keep politics out of this and discuss what do we do with these killers and terrorist, where do they go, home? American prisons? where, at whos expense? who is in charge of them, how do we treat them?

Transfer them to Ossining Maximum security prison.  See how long their precious Koran lasts then.

while that is a good idea, sing sing would eat the terrorist alive and the left would complain{some the right too} while sing sing is not to cruel for americans I am sure it would cause much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

hmm how about reopening alcatraz?

That's my problem right there. We don't know they are terrorists. They were picked up in Afgan ir Iraq and sent here. The governemt says they have evidence they are terrorists, but no one has seen it. I say put them before a court, give them representation, present what you have on them and then let someone impartial decide if they are a threat.

Now, I am not saying give them full legal rights as a US citizen. Maybe most people trust what the government tells them, but as we now know, intelligence can be wrong. If they are dangerous try them and lock them up. If you made a mistake and Mr. Abu was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Admit it and move on.

On what charges are you going to try them? Most of them have not committed an outright crime.

My vote is an undisclosed location on Baffin Island or on Antarctica...secure, remote, and hell for anyone used to 120 degree heat.

Let them wail and moan. They asked for it. Let them reap what they sow.

and conversly we do not know they are NOT terrorist either, most of these "gentlemen" were picked up in the afgan confict, fighting OUT OF UNIFORM which is against the much heralded geneva convention.

I say military tribunal is the way to go with them, try them sentence them and be done with it.

The problem is who's guilty, who's innocent, and how do we determin this well enough to ensure our safety? Imagine, a person from the prison is allowed to leave.. comes to the US.. and blows up the Great Mall of America on Independence Day, killing thousands.. and what would everybody be shouting? "Why didn't you do something about this!?" or "He should have never been let out" by the very people who demanded he go free. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation..

and there in lies the crux of the problem, while some from the left and right too want to close gitmo, if one of these monsters did what you suggest the administaration would be dragged over the dung heap for not protecting americans, damned if they do, damned if they do not. exactly.

We should make them all promise to behave and send them home. I'm sure we could trust them to keep their word.

I don't know if these would work. You waould have to get cooperation from the CAnadian government to open a prison on their territory. And Antarctica is also international territory. Alcatraz might be better as it is an island which is unarguably on US soil.

That was actually part of my point. Location on a more international site would be better for security as well as potential international opinion. I believe (although I am not sure) we have a base on Baffin Island, which is why I mentioned it; as for Antarctica, I KNOW we have bases there. But that being said, it really was somewhat tongue in cheek.

Alcatraz? BAD idea! Located next to a large city, the potential for terrorist activities by sympathetic Muslims is FAR too great. If you're going to go with a location that is unarguably American, the Aleutians would be a better choice.

but no one is adressing my other questions gid, who is in charge of them? How do we define treatemts so we do not have a bunch of unrealistic bleeding hearts crying?

Easy. Let Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and their other Hollywood buddies run Gitmo...it would be a way of showing support for the US. The only rules are, they couldn't RELEASE the prisoners.

Those guys would be using Tim Robbins as their BITCH within a week, and they'd be crying twice as hard for the US military to take it back over!

Yeah, probably. I was just thinking Alcatraz because they have a prison there already.
