Demigod - The Legends Tournament

Demigod - The Legends Tournament

I'm thinking of having a final tournament that I will participate in. I never had the tourney I wanted to even though I've hosted several.  It's time for that to change.

The goal of the tournament is to crown the absolute best player(s) out there EVER.  I will be attempting to bring back some all stars.  The tournament will be invitation only (more on this in a bit).  There will be no set teams.  Everyone will play with everyone.  The winner(s) will be decided based on cumulative score per game - eg a win will be 2 points - a loss 1 point.  The majority (if not all) of the prize money will come from everyone playing in the tournament.  Eg, if you want to play and think you are the best, you will pay to enter.  You don't pay, you don't play. We will all put our money where our mouth is.

I will set the tiers on entrants.  For instance, anyone that I consider a contender for the number 1 spot will pay $20 to enter (note - any $$$ amount I mention is subject to change - just some quick thoughts).  If I think its close but not likely, $10.  And if I think no chance in hell, $5.  After we get a list of folks wanting to participate, I will clarify where I think folks fall.  If I think you are crap, well good news if you are not.  If there is a tie for the #1 slot after the tourney is over, we will have some sort of competition to determine the true winner.  I will pony up a bonus prize that will be reasonably generous.  The number 1-3 slots will receive a payout of some sort.  All entrance fees will be collected before the tourney.  I expect this will be a 2v2 tourney.

And last - this tournament will happen in a timely order.  People not showing up when expected will be disqualified.  We will not be exceedingly gracious.  All matches will be scheduled in as convenient a time frame as possible.  I will be the final judge unless I am involved in the game. In that case, we will fall to another (undecided at this point) judge.

So, there are the basic premises. If you are interested, please respond here.  If you know folks that you consider excellent players still playing or if you have contact with them outside of Demigod (and they aren't currently playing), please give them an invite.

edit - we very well might have different rules for folks that based on my estimation of skill. re: my $20, $10, $5 entrance fees... perhaps the $20 folks will not be able to use the same character more than 2 times... the the $10 folks not more than 4 times... and the $5 folks have no restrictions.  Anyway - last random thought.  That idea might be crap...

I love this forum.  :P

Anyway, that said, I'm going to throw out some new thoughts.  1st - yes, the math is super annoying for what I'm trying to pull off.  If the real goal was to find the best players out of every that entered, then we really would have to make every possible team combination and have them fight against every possible team combination.  That said, the numbers get a little stupid if you work that out, but it is the most fair.  re: fair - consider what happens if it happens to be 3 all stars on one team for a game but they end of fighting against not quite as impressive opponents.  The placement of the matches would fall to chance, so something like that is possible.  Anyway, screw the completely fair route - I don't think any of us are looking for a 200 game tourney.  That said, if we really did that, you would have some nice nerd bragging rights.  Barring that, let's change the terms.  Make it so that everyone will play on the same team as everyone once.  I only had a few minutes at work to consider the math, but it comes out to like 30ish games for the tourney if we only have 9 people.  That's doable, but I'm sure the number of games jumps quite a bit if we jump to 12.

*pacov gets paged out by work while he writes this post and decides to cut it short*

I'm thinking of perhaps 2 tourneys.  1 true invitation only that sticks with the format I've mentioned.  This would be folks that I know to be reliable and would be primarily for fun (and glory ofc).  It would also be very exclusive.  I would target no more than 9 players.  The other tourney might stick with a logical set format (eg 2v2 or 3v3 but folks make their own teams).  This is probably the best approach, at least in my mind at this point.  I just honestly don't think we could pull off the original type of tourney if the invite list is > 9 - and even then...

I am a shit player and in no way a contender But I will beat ur asses once in a while and laugh every minute of it.

Lukas - you are a brat.  :P  In spite of my grandiose post title/OP, it really is for fun.  Some of us to enjoy the hyper competitive side of things.  The concept of forcing a player rotation means that we all get to play with everyone and can work to the strengths and weaknesses of our teammates.  And also its not like single or dbl elimination, so even if you screw up a game or here there, you still can have a good standing.  I've always enjoyed playing with you and with folks having a similar mindset as you.  Just lose the "who can stack the best team" mindset.  At least for the tourney I have in mind, that's a nonissue (and the folks that need to stack teams will obviously get a bit of a whoopin).

Any map with different rule settings would be very very fun, but i doubt it's possible with lag issues, at least not on the big maps. Flag control, killing fortresses, slaughter are 3 complete different games I'd love to play out on a higher lvl. Of course conquest should be played, too.  But I doubt any of you have played a lot of these, so I would have a huge advantage huehuehuehue

like even a game on fast or slow would be interesting.

Like a brat...way too old to be one But yes a very naughty boy. Of course there's prolly only 1 person here who likes to stack and of course you're all awesome. Take what I say with a grain of salt it's a bit tongue-in-cheek I just want to get people THINKING.

I think u have a completely wrong image of most of "us"..

I always try to play balanced games (be it with dg choices or player skills) and Id rather play on the weaker side to at least have an interesting game.. Also whenever I saw people hosting premade games I joined and wanted to play against better players to see how they play and improve my game.. Most people I`m considering "pro" are exactly like this too.

imo there are only few guys with a high win% who are stacking teams (e.g. wip) but in most cases theyre not as highly skilled as others because theyre only playing against weaker teams..

another note on "stacking": I remember hosting 2v2 PREMADE games with Zen_God and others.. It`s obvious that in this case we want to play together and not like in most other games in the opposing teams (to balance).. Why would you call us "stacker"....

That's true. Nnnils never stacks (I didn't see him do that, at least), and always tries to play on a weaker team. However, there is a long list of players (some of them quite experienced) he refuses to play with/against (:

Also, if you want to see nnnils curse in German, buy Theurgist's Cap.

Also, if you want to see Darkliath curse in Lithuanian, buy Theurgist's Cap.

I really hate this item (reminds me of noobs or AI's buying it over and over, every single game, when it is nearly useless to their build.

Also, we do stack teams. As often as possible, until someone recognizes (then might change teams a bit, so we could unbalance differently to our favor).

It's actually very good on my Sedna in long Sed v Sed/Sed v Erb lane battles. Otherwise... Eh, not so much (:

Hey nnils I think you named one! And there's one more not mentioned and not in this thread ;-) But not you I was talking about. Actually its mostly the latest 'mid' levels that do it not these 'high/pro' levels here. Sorry for any insult not intended for the good guys.

Personally, I love stacking with Darkli. The tactic: we just sit in a lobby as Sed and Reg/DA and wait for a 2v2. Then some arrogant pseudo-pro players join, see her 39%, and ready up.

That's the downside of "secret stacked lobbies."  The only person I know that's solid with a win rate % below 40% is dark.  Certainly works nice if she's on your team, though :p

I was 40% recently! Not below 40% (for a day maybe). But I doubt that I have much influence to my team. We still lose a lot. Whether it's 2v2 premade or some 3v3 random players. And some players don't like to play with me much.  :S

The person with the lowest win% in a team is always the one to blame

This is why I try to play with newbies, who have lower one   Even if I fail miserably, I can at least blame them. Like 0 games 0% win rate players are perfect for this.

I don't know about some random 3v3 players, but usually, having you in my team = wiin. The only guys I'd be uncertain of victory against in this case are: nnnils, yellow_belly, maybe renz. And we've lost the 2v2 exactly 2 times AFAIK: the first one was Sed/Reg vs Rook/UB (that was quite a glorious defeat and a gg), the second one was that Sed/DA mirror vs nnnils/airpush, where nnnils was genuinely amazed at how airpush managed to kill you so many times (:

I was beaten by a girl last night. Not Dark. Caseabrook is the new bad bitch in town.

Yeah. I'll send a replay to your wife. Is Casea good?

Send the replay to HIS wife lol ... She's noob but my bro is teaching her fast.... With him on her team hard to beat. He's much stronger player than I (most of the time) so it evens the odds.

I played another person last night with <40% but over 1k games.... beat them though so I cannot say how solid they are (cant remember the name)
