April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

DG Community - we are in the process of organizing a Demigod 2v2 tournament.  This tournament is open to all that would like to participate, but does require that you follow this thread for updates, etc, as the majority of the communications including brackets will be published here.

This thread will provide the latest tournament rules, 2 man teams that have registered, and individuals that are looking to be a part of a team but do not currently have a partner.  If you'd like to participate and don't have a team, indicate so here.  Then, make efforts either in this thread or via pm to form your own team. If you are unable to form a two man team, don't worry.  All of the individuals that have indicated that they'd like to participate and were not successful at forming a 2-man team will be randomly placed into teams on the cut off date.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Tournament Rules:

  • You may only select characters as indicated in the grid below:

  • Each match in the tournament will be the best 2 out of 3 games
  • All matches will be played on cataract with default settings (the only exceptions being AI HP on Very High and AI Gold/XP on low)
  • After teams are formed, they will be randomly placed into a bracket to determine who will fight who.  Everything will be random initially in round 1.  In the following rounds, the winners from one game will play the winners from another based on location in the bracket starting from the top on to the bottom.
  • Each team will play 1 round on light side, then 1 round on dark side.  If there is a 3rd round, the team that had the fastest win in game 1 or 2 gets to pick the side they want to be on (keep in mind the following rule).
  • The team that is on the dark side must pick their characters and ready up first.  Then the light gets to pick and the dark side does not have a chance to adjust their characters.
  • To track your wins, you must do the following - post the replay at gamereplays.org.  If you have issues with gamereplays, upload the file to rapid share and provide us with a link.  Also, provide a link to the match in the pantheon and let me know if its a win or loss.  The winning team should do this for each and every match.
  • UberFix 1.02 must be used (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/374315) UberFix is a mod that simply fixes many of the bugs in Demigod.  Check the modding forum for everything that is fixed by UberFix 1.02.

How will we handle crashes:

If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match.  If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark).  If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win.  If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, a third party will review the replay of the match and render a decision.  Be aware that the 3rd party must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone.

How we will handle invalid game states:

The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match.  In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes.  If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and we will review.  If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team should be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts. Please be reasonable, though.  We all know that Demigod has its bugs and its still pretty easy to encounter an invalid game state even if no one has intentionally triggered it.  If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof.

Also be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any foul play.

Prizes:

Outside of prestige in our small community, there is also a cash prize thanks to community contributions.

Currently, the total amount pledged for this tournament is $199.95.  Of that $199.95, I have received $99.95.  If you would like to contribute to the pot, please pm me and I'll get you the needed info to send me a payment.  If individuals do not come through on their pledges, I will not be personally covering the difference.  My goal is to collect the pledged amount before the tournament starts and I will be providing updates as I receive the pledged money.

Please thank our contributors and consider contributing to the prize yourself.

I think for now, Ninki, it's simple. We need to get this thing underway. I think for future tournies, doing a double-elimination format (possibly with seeds since this gives us a good idea for seeding placement) will be better/easier. I do see the bottom half of the brackets as being a little bit weaker than the top half (only cow + jaws, pacov + trouser, mith + renz).

That said, there are plenty of room for surprises and upsets, especially with Demigod and it's crashing ways. Also, a lot of the "top" players are used to playing Oak, Erebus, Beast, Rook. Not so much the others. This may give weaker players an advantage because they might be much more familiar with their demigod selection.

I agree with Hegdie, this is our first attempt at a tournament and from seeing how much interest there has been I don't think it will be the last (here's hoping :D ) . Double-elimination i believe would really calm the fears of everyone when it comes to 2 top teams meeting in round 1 and being eliminated from the tournament there by robbing us all of getting to see them play more. Still dancing around the forum doesn't produce good dg replays either. I personally am really looking forward to seeing some interesting dg match ups thanks to the well thought out balancing of the demigod pairs through the rules set up. Lets just have some fun, kick some ass, and remember what we learned from trying to get this thing off the ground.

We aren't producing this for network television, fellas.

Random seeding isn't fair or exciting, it's random, and perfect is enemy of the good  In the interest of getting this thing started as opposed to making Duke Nukem Forever, let's go with pacov's chart and say it all kicks off tomorrow, with a week for each section.

And yes, my words have weight because it's really not in my best interest to keep things the way they are.  ^^

If you want to have seeded double elimination in the next tournament then let's set that up, right now it's late in the game.

lol... your second line kinda spoke for you.  It's not fair or exciting.  Ninki's solves both of the issues; both solved with a single elimination not a double.

Why does everyone get my names wrong!?!? XD  It's shred_demon - all lower cases and Smurf_Demon with two upper cases :P

I have a job, two houses to help maintain, a 2 1/2 hour commute to good internet service, and a girlfriend who's libido is conversely proportionate to how often she sees me wearing a headset and playing "that stupid game" while Hedgie yells at me.

I thought this was just gonna be a for fun... but you guys want double elimination, seriously?

the only person who's suggested double elimination is maxsteel.  I wouldn't really be in favor of double elim for this tourney

Everyone is sorta ripping on Pacov here... he has spent a lot of time and effort getting this thing running, so let's not quite be so hasty to start a riot.

First, and this is mostly to pacov. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and believing you when you say that this really is the first random bracket and it is REALLY random. I'm hoping you're a trustworthy guy and if you say it is so, I'll believe you. THAT SAID, if I were in your place and I saw that random bracket being generated, I would have re-rolled it until I personally was not in a super-favored place (free shot to the semi-finals). You don't have to be lined up to face the bestest team out there Round 1, but only having to worry about one "top" team in your entire lower bracket (since there are only two and one will eliminate the other) is a little bit of an issue, for me.

I do agree that Ninki's solution is a good hybrid of pacov. It has less "favoritism" (even if just by the random number generator) and promises exciting Round 3, 4 and 5 games. However, I still think this does need to get down the road, and soon. Which is why I'm still leaning on just using pacov's thing and calling it a day.

For FUTURE tournaments, we can use seeds, especially based on each teams' performance this tournament. This would probably help relax everything. Double elimination is up in the air, but I think we shouldn't do it for this tournament.

So, what I'm proposing is this:

By the end of the day, if pacov agrees with Ninki's solution he just updates OP. Otherwise, we just use pacov's list.

Starting tomorrow, each team has a week to get together and do their games. Each round starts on the following Monday. Note that since we will have the bracket, we can "pre-schedule" all the matchups. Assume you win every game, PM your opponents on the forum or in-game and try to get a time set up for that specific week so that there is no "uhh uhhh I couldn't talk to my opponents" in the future. I realize that might happen this week, but hopefully not for any following weeks.

Since your games are subject to "review" in case of a crash, I recommend not being a procrastinator and doing all your games on Sunday. Friday/Saturday would be much better but still poses potential problems based on how busy pacov's life is.

Assuming I can get interwebs back, you best not crap out Cow, we got a ways to go to face each other!

Since I'm not part of the tournament, it's not like I'd be upset if the bracket was left the way it is. But I would be withdrawing my pledge, because half the tournament is just a joke.

And I understand there are more opportunities for tournaments, but I really doubt the game will survive long enough for a 2nd tourney as new games come out in the summer. This may very well be the very last one we'll have with this many teams. Might as well get it right as much as possible the 1st time around. Changing the brackets really doesn't take that much time, the matches haven't even been scheduled yet.

Pacov's done a great job.  Pacov's list is fine, let's roll with it.

And the people who are saying the list is fine tend to be those that are reaping the benefits from the match ups, of course.

I haven't had a chance to read this since my last reply, but just got a pm from nomilarac and he was generous enough to send through $10, so our total pot is now $150 (with $50 received). Brandon touched based with me a couple of days ago and said he'd be sending payment within the next week.  Anyone that would like to contribute to the pot, please send me a pm. Thanks!

Thanks nomilarac for your generous contribution!

I don't think I do and I don't care

Relax, if this goes well, we can get more rolling. I know if we do these every now and then it'll keep my ass playing fo-evah.

Thanks Pacov. Not just for this, but for all the work you put in. If it's a success, I'll happily take over for the next one, I know you're probably sick of doin all of this crap ;)

I'm completely sure that Pacov gave himself no favoritism and him getting a bye was random... and considering the effort he's put into setting up this tourney I think its only right that he should have had a free shot past the first round anyway.

  No wonder, you look sooooo hot wearing that headset, and Hedgie's californian accent is soooooo sexy.... :smitten: :sun:   Man how i miss you 2 calling me "greek"... :w00t:

Anyway, i suggest everybody take a moment to put theirselves in Pacov's place, who's making a great effort organizing this goddamn tournament FOR FREE, then think twice before putting more rocks in this tournaments' way. Play and have fun guys,

it's.just.a.game .

P.S: I've received so much from demigod community i'm just giving a little back, i'm the one thanking you guys

You kind of have to think beyond the first round. It's technically 2 rounds, but I don't really care which team gets a bye or whatever. What I do care is that the stronger teams are being paired up with another in the first round so that you lose out on some potential good matches and you'll have to bear through matches with predictable outcomes.

One team already dropped out so the brackets will have to be modified anyhow.

If no one really 'cares' then they should switch spots with RAWRRR & Kalel or Janook & magnus.

I've created randomly assigned teams so players that wanted to participate and couldn't find a partner could do so. I created a bracket based on feedback and the request of players. And I randomly assigned positions in the bracket so that everyone would have a fair shake of where they would be.

I quoted myself.  Good times.

Any chance all these great ideas for changing the bracket could have come out when we were actually discussing the brackets and not after I put the time into creating them?  Or perhaps before a few individuals didn't like where they were randomly placed?  I'm sorry you guys required a visual aid to understand what randomly generated brackets would mean.  But from what I've read, Ninki has offered to contribute to the pot but now refuses to do so unless the brackets are changed.  That's pretty cool of you.  And I sincerely don't appreciate even the slightest attacks on me implying that I didn't randomly generate the brackets. They were, on 1 run through, completely, randomly generated.

Again, notice what the request to change the brackets is doing - its giving everyone in Ninki's clan and the tier 1s a pass in the first part of round 1.  Do the folks don't get a pass think that is fair?  Or is randomly generated bracket a more fair way to do things.

^Then you should volunteer yourself to switch spots with RAWRRRR & Kalel or janook & magnus. I never doubted you randomized it or what not. It really doesn't make a difference whether you did or not because the brackets are already made anyway. I'm also not going to pay for a boring movie, and I would put this under the same category. I'm not donating because I want people to worship me for being a good person, if that's the case I'd rather donate to Haiti.

There were already a few suggestions to pair up the strongest teams with the weaker teams so you don't lose out on the good players early in the round, and I'm assuming that was kinda ignored.

I also don't need to give my clan members an advantage. To be blunt, they'll make it to the finals one way or another regardless of how you match them up.

Well, it means I have a better chance of winning at least one round... ;)
