April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

DG Community - we are in the process of organizing a Demigod 2v2 tournament.  This tournament is open to all that would like to participate, but does require that you follow this thread for updates, etc, as the majority of the communications including brackets will be published here.

This thread will provide the latest tournament rules, 2 man teams that have registered, and individuals that are looking to be a part of a team but do not currently have a partner.  If you'd like to participate and don't have a team, indicate so here.  Then, make efforts either in this thread or via pm to form your own team. If you are unable to form a two man team, don't worry.  All of the individuals that have indicated that they'd like to participate and were not successful at forming a 2-man team will be randomly placed into teams on the cut off date.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Tournament Rules:

  • You may only select characters as indicated in the grid below:

  • Each match in the tournament will be the best 2 out of 3 games
  • All matches will be played on cataract with default settings (the only exceptions being AI HP on Very High and AI Gold/XP on low)
  • After teams are formed, they will be randomly placed into a bracket to determine who will fight who.  Everything will be random initially in round 1.  In the following rounds, the winners from one game will play the winners from another based on location in the bracket starting from the top on to the bottom.
  • Each team will play 1 round on light side, then 1 round on dark side.  If there is a 3rd round, the team that had the fastest win in game 1 or 2 gets to pick the side they want to be on (keep in mind the following rule).
  • The team that is on the dark side must pick their characters and ready up first.  Then the light gets to pick and the dark side does not have a chance to adjust their characters.
  • To track your wins, you must do the following - post the replay at gamereplays.org.  If you have issues with gamereplays, upload the file to rapid share and provide us with a link.  Also, provide a link to the match in the pantheon and let me know if its a win or loss.  The winning team should do this for each and every match.
  • UberFix 1.02 must be used (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/374315) UberFix is a mod that simply fixes many of the bugs in Demigod.  Check the modding forum for everything that is fixed by UberFix 1.02.

How will we handle crashes:

If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match.  If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark).  If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win.  If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, a third party will review the replay of the match and render a decision.  Be aware that the 3rd party must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone.

How we will handle invalid game states:

The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match.  In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes.  If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and we will review.  If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team should be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts. Please be reasonable, though.  We all know that Demigod has its bugs and its still pretty easy to encounter an invalid game state even if no one has intentionally triggered it.  If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof.

Also be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any foul play.

Prizes:

Outside of prestige in our small community, there is also a cash prize thanks to community contributions.

Currently, the total amount pledged for this tournament is $199.95.  Of that $199.95, I have received $99.95.  If you would like to contribute to the pot, please pm me and I'll get you the needed info to send me a payment.  If individuals do not come through on their pledges, I will not be personally covering the difference.  My goal is to collect the pledged amount before the tournament starts and I will be providing updates as I receive the pledged money.

Please thank our contributors and consider contributing to the prize yourself.

So, from my count, I see keep-it-as-it-is as fine. So lets just forget that page happened and start shit talking each other like we should be.

You best be playing TB Thunder. Looking forward to that match!

Edit: This to That

Although people will accuse me of bias since we scored a bye we never would have received based on ranking, I have to say:

If you want the tournament done differently, organize it yourself. pacov has put hours into this thing, he put it together, it's his call.

If this tournament is half as fun as it looks like it will be, there will be more. Especially if the seeding from this one is used to make everyone happier about the next.

I think the pairings are fine.  Doesn't matter to me if I'm playing a strong team early or later, I still have to play them one way or another.

I'm in the same boat.  It was luck of the draw.  If I drew the toughest schedule possible, I'd play it.

I still maintain that we will have another tournament very soon (and I already have some funding lined up for that) as long as this tournament is successful. I do hope I can take a back seat on the organization side next time and simply play, though.

Yes, that's true, you will face a hard team sooner or later.  That's not really the issue.  Also, my suggestion on vent was to put the 8 teams in the first round and not take a bye, but the suggestion was made that the way Ninki has it setup allows more teams to play multiple games rather than get knocked out in the first couple games by the 8 teams.  Obviously getting a bye is going to happen with the brackets, so who gets it doesn't really matter to me.  If it would make you feel better, putting all the tier 1 teams in the first bracket then I'm all for that.  Either way, it makes rounds 3 / 4 / 5 much more interesting, and means, barring any upsets, that the 8 teams will play against another of the 8 3 times (3 / 4/ 5).  Certainly not saying upsets can't happen (fucking Kansas).

Also, thank you passfail for getting this whole thing started even though pacov took it over :)  I'm not saying Pacov hasn't put a lot of work into this, but that also doesn't mean it's perfect with no help from the community.  The continued discussion on the actual rules from the tournament was a good example and I absolutely love the large possibilities of potential match-ups.

This is great fun.  Only sad thing is it took the community this long to get this shit organised :D

Dude we all apriciate the effort you have put into it.

Random or not random brackets they require bit tweaking to make the whole thing more interesting in long run.

This little effort will benefit whole turnament so I dont really see reason why not?

Nomi:  I miss you too buddy!

Pacov:  Thanks for all your hard work man, I'm pledging 20 bucks which ain't a big deal cause i'll just be paying myself the money when me and Hedgie win this thing.

Teseer:  Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click."

I'd be willing to organise a thread etc... for future tournaments.

Again, notice what the request to change the brackets is doing - its giving everyone in Ninki's clan and the tier 1s a pass in the first part of round 1.  Do the folks don't get a pass think that is fair?  Or is randomly generated bracket a more fair way to do things.

None of us care about getting a pass.  Ninki is speaking for some people who were discussing this on vent last night and feel there are no competitive matchups for you and Trouser in the second or third round Pacov.  You can switch Orcun and I with one of the green free agents teams in the first round to fix this.

For all of you with issues, let me make a little graphic for you all...

---> the time for helpful suggestions on pairings and bracketology <----  (time passing) ----> [Event: The Random Making Of Matchups] -----> the time for playing the matchups and the eventual determination of the winner of this tournament according to the rules that no one had a problem with until they saw they didn't get a first round bye or had to face their friends in the first round <---- (time passing) ----> the time for planning the next DG Tourney using stuff we learned from this one <-----

Honestly I think the matchups are going to create a bunch of crappy matches and a bunch of good ones early on that take out the best players. Like i predicted a few days ago before the bracket was even made. The only "fair" way to do it is double elimination or something even more thorough. It does not necessarily change the outcome, but it can. You are all assuming that one team is "the best" and they will win. This is not necessarily true. It is possible that a few teams will be really really good, but only at their best combo, and some combos are better than others in matchups, so it could turn out that some team could get knocked out by the team thats good and has the counter to their best matchup, but that thats the only team that could beat them, and then the team that beat the team that could beat everyone else gets beaten the next round. This is only one of the many possibilities that could result in the best team overall not winning. This argument is debatable and may not happen, its hard to tell. What ISNT debatable is that this format will result in fewer interesting games. So, in principle i disagree with it. However you probably don't care what I think, and that actually turns out better for me because I'm in the crap half. And sure I'll have to play the better teams in round 2, but ill be warmed up, more solid with my combo, my partner. The people who go at it right away may not be as solid. It's hard to get good practice, noone wants to 2v2, and getting a decent match is so unlikely outside of the tournament, let alone using the uberfix and the rules.

I know I promised a commentary posted this weekend, I've been really busy. I have the replay i want to post, it will simply take a few hours to prepare it. The first time always takes longer. And as i mentioned before, if i do end up doing them for the tourny, most matches wont be worth a full commentary, and a nice highlights clip and summary would be better, so the amount of work wouldn't be that much.

I think my team has the most challenging road to victory in the tournament.  Which is cool, because it will be that much more deserved when we win.

Thunder, let me recap for you how this whole thing went. I'll start from before the brackets were made.

A: I think the brackets should be made like this...

B: We don't have time for that.

A: But...

B: We'll take suggestions for the next tournament but I think we need to get this started.

A: But...

B: Ok the brackets are made.

A: So the exact problem arises. You need to fix it like this..

B: We don't have time for that.

A: But...

B: We'll take suggestions for the next tournament.

As if this "next tournament" is happening for sure. The last Demigod tourney was almost a year ago if I'm not mistaken.

And it's been that pattern since day 1.

Also pacov, I do actually read everything you say, including this:

Quoting pacov, reply 319

All of that said, if you want to take the time to do a mock up of what you are proposing, please do so and we can discuss.

I hope you weren't just paying lip service, because if that's the case I would've never delved into this matter in the first place.

I don't see how pro teams matching off on round 1 is going to be any less exciting to watch than pro teams matching off on round 3.

^I hope you've been practicing with Janook. I'd be ashamed if you were all talk.

The problem is not the top half being boring, but the bottom half. Thankfully, Shane has volunteered his team to be moved into one of the green slots and I'm sure Achilles does not mind being switched into their slot. I don't see why there should be any objections to that. I shall double check with him when he's on xfire.

Also one team from the white slot should be moved to the red slot, since one of the teams in the red slot dropped out anyway.

but Thunder and I were supposed to beat Orcun, that was the one matchup I was really looking forward to.

Lol supposed to beat Orcun, how are you planning on doing that?  Maybe if it WAS a 2 vs 1, but he's not playing alone.

Why would you emphasize 'was'?  That doesn't even make any sense you weirdo

Lol don't you sass me.  Hedgie's trying to play head games by wording his statements as if Orcun is a one man team, so I emphasized was because if that were true they might win, but it's not.

HEY shred_demon + AbornExile, how do you guys like your tacos? Cuz you about to get served!

Also when does the tournament start?

I'm really excited about the tournament. I wonder how nervous people will be when they're actually playing for the real thing :dur:
