April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

DG Community - we are in the process of organizing a Demigod 2v2 tournament.  This tournament is open to all that would like to participate, but does require that you follow this thread for updates, etc, as the majority of the communications including brackets will be published here.

This thread will provide the latest tournament rules, 2 man teams that have registered, and individuals that are looking to be a part of a team but do not currently have a partner.  If you'd like to participate and don't have a team, indicate so here.  Then, make efforts either in this thread or via pm to form your own team. If you are unable to form a two man team, don't worry.  All of the individuals that have indicated that they'd like to participate and were not successful at forming a 2-man team will be randomly placed into teams on the cut off date.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Tournament Rules:

  • You may only select characters as indicated in the grid below:

  • Each match in the tournament will be the best 2 out of 3 games
  • All matches will be played on cataract with default settings (the only exceptions being AI HP on Very High and AI Gold/XP on low)
  • After teams are formed, they will be randomly placed into a bracket to determine who will fight who.  Everything will be random initially in round 1.  In the following rounds, the winners from one game will play the winners from another based on location in the bracket starting from the top on to the bottom.
  • Each team will play 1 round on light side, then 1 round on dark side.  If there is a 3rd round, the team that had the fastest win in game 1 or 2 gets to pick the side they want to be on (keep in mind the following rule).
  • The team that is on the dark side must pick their characters and ready up first.  Then the light gets to pick and the dark side does not have a chance to adjust their characters.
  • To track your wins, you must do the following - post the replay at gamereplays.org.  If you have issues with gamereplays, upload the file to rapid share and provide us with a link.  Also, provide a link to the match in the pantheon and let me know if its a win or loss.  The winning team should do this for each and every match.
  • UberFix 1.02 must be used (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/374315) UberFix is a mod that simply fixes many of the bugs in Demigod.  Check the modding forum for everything that is fixed by UberFix 1.02.

How will we handle crashes:

If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match.  If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark).  If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win.  If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, a third party will review the replay of the match and render a decision.  Be aware that the 3rd party must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone.

How we will handle invalid game states:

The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match.  In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes.  If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and we will review.  If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team should be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts. Please be reasonable, though.  We all know that Demigod has its bugs and its still pretty easy to encounter an invalid game state even if no one has intentionally triggered it.  If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof.

Also be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any foul play.

Prizes:

Outside of prestige in our small community, there is also a cash prize thanks to community contributions.

Currently, the total amount pledged for this tournament is $199.95.  Of that $199.95, I have received $99.95.  If you would like to contribute to the pot, please pm me and I'll get you the needed info to send me a payment.  If individuals do not come through on their pledges, I will not be personally covering the difference.  My goal is to collect the pledged amount before the tournament starts and I will be providing updates as I receive the pledged money.

Please thank our contributors and consider contributing to the prize yourself.

So, need to explain to people how to get the newest uberfix.  Unfortunately the link will not replace the older 1.02 unless you delete the old one out of your mod list first.  This caused several issues when we tried to practice on it due to conflicting mods (caused invalid gamestate on the loading screen).

1.  Delete old uberfix mod

  • Go to where to the game is installed (default is program files (86) / Stardock Games / Demigod
  • Go to bindata in the Demigod folder
  • Go to Mods
  • delete all Uberfix folders.

2.  Download new uberfix install exe.  http://www.box.net/shared/pclz3qn3h1

3.  Install, enable.  In the mod manager, if you click on it, the version number should end in 9265 and start 1.01999990 or so.

so um...maybe I'm missing something but the addition of Kollecktir brings us to 13 free agents?

sigh... if that's the case then the he's out unless he can find a teammate.  NINKI - I BELIEVED YOU, MAN!  You should learn to count too :)  Anyone of the fringe that would like to be added?  I guess we need one more.  I'd really like to start pairing people up you know...

ok - because of the uneven numbers and the late entry of Kollecktir, he is out.  If he can find himself a teammate that is not in the free agents list (as I'm starting to pair them up now), then he can play as long as the brackets aren't finished.  I won't be doing the brackets today, but I will be randomly pairing folks.

Here are the random team pairings:

Cstoni66 + SmokingBalrog (free agent team)

McGreg + Busdude (free agent team)

haxthias + XxXxAchillesTGxXxX (free agent team)

Synnworld + AtMa44x (free agent team)

Passfail + prozombe (free agent team)

brandon_Varn + tacoguyv1 (free agent team)

I'll still allow Kollecktir to get in on this if he can find a partner, say, in the next 24 hours.  Then I'm doing the brackets.

That brings us to 24 teams... so without Kollecktir, we have an even number of teams to boot...

So, who is going to be in charge of the betting pool?

re: UberFix 1.02

  • RAWRRRR is unfortunately correct. If you installed any of the 1.02 betas you'll need to delete them.
  • If you didn't install any of the 1.02's, you shouldn't have any problems.
  • The current version number is 1.02, but it shows up as 1.0199999809256.
    • It is due to how demigod handled the float numeric in this case.
    • I'll fix it to be sensible in the 1.03 release.
    • I blame pacov for his poor beta testing abilities.

24 teams with single elimination gives you three teams in the finals.  This is where a 2v2v2 map would come in handy ^^

shut it.  I can't make you code good :)

yeah - we might want to devise a system for the 4th round, but rounds 1, 2, and 3 should be smooth. But come round 4, its like you said, one team would get a pass and go directly to the finals while another team would have to fight it out to get there.

We could leave things as they end up in the bracket and perhaps have a few of us vote on who should get the pass into the finals.... say if someone has an easier run to the finals, then perhaps we'd force them to fight.

Soo who's going to be in the bracket that gets the lucky bye in the 4th round? :P

We could do it like the pros do it - 8 teams are getting a Round 1 bye in this model, but you have two clear finalists in Round 5.

What do you think?

couuld do a separate finals round for the top 3.  i.e.:

A vs B

A vs C

B vs C

Win both of your games, and you win overall.

If all 3 only won 1 game, that would mean that all 3 lost to a team that was beaten by a team they beat (i.e. A beats B but loses to C.  You would think that C would be better than B and C would win 2 games).  It seems much more likely that there would not be a wash at this point and would prevent a bye.  Say A won both, then the B vs C would accurately determine 2nd and 3rd.

I once hosted a "super pro" game so I'm curious.  I'll look into this.  I've already coded an excel spreadsheet to make the teams, but this system might work for us.  Anyone who is interested, check out the link Ke5trel provided and give some feedback.

edit - and if you guys want to practice some live commentary and figure out how you are going to record your commentary, etc, let me know.  I'd be willing to participate in a 2v2 game where we'd have 1 spectator on each team that would provide a commentary.  We could really nerd this up if we wanted to.  If teams were willing, we could even record the in game team voice chat and provide.  There are alot of options.

Ke5trel's idea works as well.  Getting a bye past the first round isn't really a big deal and 100% prevents a wash.

didn't mean to jam you up, pacov.  If you already have a spreadsheet up we could just figure something easy out for the finals - sudden death per RAWRRRR or even something like the team with least losses in qualifying rounds gets a bye to finals

I think Kollecktir was thinking of teaming with Naur.

I'M SORRY PACOV!!! You're right. I don't actually know how to count very well :'(

Thinking about and actually teaming up are different.  :)  Can we get confirmation?  If so, we can go with this bracket setup and I can do a small bit of coding to make it happen.  We're already about 2 days over deadline pissing around to get 1 other guy in the tourney.  Anyway - someone get confirmation from them (looking at you Ninki) by say midnight tonight EST (7 hours or so from now) and they are in.  If any of you catch either of them in game, ask them about it).  Otherwise they are out.

I think anything more thorough than single elimination would be better, whether its round robin, double elimination, whatever. Losing one matchup and then your out is bad. If you go up against a really good team thats only a bit better than yours, your out, but teams that are both crappy one of them gets to advance, it can turn out that the last round or even the last few are pointless, and that the real final match happened much earlier.

As for the commentary I already have a 2v2 on cataract that a friend gave me, that was commentable. Going to try to do it this weekend. Will post it when i do. Also theres going to be TONS of matches in this tournament, what i think would be best is for the games that arent too interesting and there'll be lots of those, a few minute long post commentary summarizing the game could be posted. Just watch the game, make a few notes and splice together the important parts of the game to make like a "highlights" thing and talk about the game over it. That way all the boring or not relevant games don't have to be fully commentated, but people can still check out what happened in them. :)

My internet is sucking tonight :(  I've dropped from 3 games for no reason :/  God knows why, my connection is normally really good!

Ok.  The final word is that it will be a 25 team tournament.  So, there's proof that at least 50 of us are still playing :)  Glad to see such a good turnout for our first community tournament and hopefully we'll get even more folks in the next one.  I'll try to get the brackets together over the next couple of days.  I'll be randomly assigning spots in the bracket so we'll see how things lie and I am planning on sticking with the single elimination method - here's what the shape of the chart will look like anyway - http://www.printyourbrackets.com/25teamsingleeliminationprint.html
