If you wanna discuss the atomic bombings of Japan, that really deserves a thread entirely its own. There are very compelling arguments on both sides.


What discussion? The mother f@#$% attacked us first. They didn't even have the honor to announce their attack. It was a sneak attack. Sneak attacks break the laws of warfare. Using atomic bombs might also be against the laws. But what the hell? The laws at that point were completely out the window.

You break the laws, expect your adversary to break them also.

For that matter, whats the difference between dying by going from the solid state to the vapor state or the plasma state in a few milliseconds or dying by having a bayonet stab your heart out, having a grenade compress your entire face in, etc.?

Shit, how would I rather die? Die in a few milliseconds or having to experince my heart being gouged out by a bayonet?

Ah..what is wrong with american bashing. I am not asking a rhetorical questions. From my understanding, in the U.S, you guys don't know dirt about other people's culture and also think you yourselves are the greatest nation and the most powerful in the world. Not only that, everyone should and ought to follow your way of life. Okay boys and girls, before this goes too far without a bit of eye witness reporting. I've been to Iraq as a soldier and many US servicemen think that we should cut and run. Those are the guys and girls that came over after the beginning of the war. I was there right after the beginning, for thirteen and a half months, and I had the honor to be there when our bulldozers dug up the mass graves. I got to see the skeletons of men, women, and children (even babies people) come rolling out of the sand by the hundreds and in some cases by the thousands. All you people out there who think that the US shouldn't have gone into that country are the kind of people that let Hitler stay in power, even after it was known that he had death camps. Who cares if Iraq couldn't take on the world like German could, their leader was still killing people on a huge scale using gas, biological weapons, and the good old fashion bullet. But that's okay right, he wasn't killing your people was he? It doesn't matter if he isn't killing your people, as long as it's no one you know, all you cowards would rather stick your head in the sand and pray that it doesn't happen to you. No, we aren't the best people over in the US; I personnally think our present leader is kind of a turd but that's the great thing about this country, we are about to get a new one. Are the new ones any good, who knows, we'll find out, and if we don't like them, we can even have them removed legally (though the last time we started down that trail, it was for a leader that couldn't keep his wang in his pants). I would like to remind the world that the US is a damn young country and we have still bailed out most of the nations of the people on this board. You people in France, work on your German. England, well, knuff said there. Germany, you barely had a building standing after world war two yet now you guys have one hell of a good economy (most likely better then ours right now) even though you killed our people by the tens of thousands less then a quarter of our nations age ago. The older nations hold grudges for hundreds of years, long after the offended people are dead as well as their children and their children's children. We've still got people alive who fought in world war two and if a nation that was once our enemy less then two generations ago needs help, here comes the US with money, food, and whatever the hell else you need. Even with this, we give the bad people a good target to hate and plot against, so you can sleep well at night because once again, they aren't coming after you.We've got our problems but until a single one of you can say you stood beside me when they dug up the mass graves in Iraq, or can tell me you were standing beside me when every Iraqi in sight was running up to shake our hands and praise Allah that we came to stop the tyrant. We don't fight Iraqis over there, they are dying along side us, strong, brave, devout men and woman who just want to be free of those that would warp Islam for their own ends. I cried for the Iraqi soldiers that died along side the US soldiers fighting against people who proudly admitted being from Iran with weapons the Iranian government bought them. Someday, Iraq will be a shining beacon of hope in the Middle East and not because they became like the US, but because they charted their own path. They'll probably end up hating us though, like all the other nations that we saved in our short time as a nation ourselves but we have thick skin here in the US (most of us at least) and we'll get by, secretly smiling to ourselves in the knowledge that our blood gave you the chance to hate us. I know it's been a lot of years since WW2 but hey, our history isn't that old. Have a natural disaster happen and see who comes running to help. Lots of other countries have and even when they treated us like crap, we still found a way to help there people with food, without making them watch our TV or follow our government. Hell, we don't even watch our own TV these days and complaining about our government is a national passtime. I'm watching a Japanese TV show right now and thinking about ordering some Italian food (wait a minute, didn't we have a war against them????). And are we demanding all of the oil from Iraq now that we are in the country? Hell no, I'm, paying $4.10 a gallon for gas; most likely you may be using some Iraqi oil in your vehicle just like we are. We are paying billions a week to keep a bunch of people, who share nothing in common with us other then being human and wanting to be free, safe. Yeah, the US is a bully and a bastard, we must be the worst people on the Earth. We help our old enemies and would give up nearly everything to help out someone in need so if this is what makes a bad nation, I'm proud to live in, fight for, and wake up every morning in one.On a side note, I thought this was a Sins of a Solar Empire board where we talk about games and the like. I didn't see an American complaining about another nation on here, it took someone else to take a board made to talk about a game and turn it into a good place to find hate. Good job people.

Something more recent perhaps, the current mess going on in Sudan? When we do intervene, we're the evil empire, taking over the world, even after being harassed to do so.

The shit we take over Vietnam is just insane. France started that mess, the whores of war have started about half the disasters we've gone in to clean up. The only problem with going in to clean up Vietnam was that the DEMOCRATS in office were fucking useless. Oh look, China is invading Vietnam and trying to take it over by proxy using a communist insurgency, lets ignore the Chinese involvement and not bomb the shit out of their supply lines and tell them to stay the fuck out of other peoples countries. Then when we got someone with balls in office, and the war went from going nowhere to all but over, the democrats come to the rescue again and cut funding. Oh look, both sides of Vietnam hate us now!

If you want to know why the US is stuck playing world police, it's because Europe decided to play spineless asshole after WW2 when they unilaterally pulled out of all their colonies and left three continents in chaos. It's a real blast being the only protection the lot of you ingrates have against the enemies you made in multitudes over the last several centuries. Go read about the 6 Day War, or the Yom Kippur War. For that matter, Saddam launched a few scuds their way in 1991. Face it, there's a lot of Arabs who'd like to kill every Israeli ever born, and US help is one of the main reasons they haven't gotten their wish. I'm sure batting helmets would stop a scud, or a Syrian tank division.

As for the bombing of Japan, that was one of the world's greatest humanitarian acts. How, you ask? Projected casualties for the invasion ran to a million in the first week or two. Can you imagine an occupation of a country who's antitank mines consisted of burying a guy with an artillery shell and a hammer? Japanese schoolgirls were being trained to attack US GIs with sharpened sticks, for Christ's sake. The ONLY way that was avoided was to impress upon the Emperor that we could stand off and blast them to dust, without giving them the chance to inflict casualties on us.

And ask your average Japanese citizen, or German, or Italian, whether they were better off in the 60s than they were in the 30s. Expecting a massive turnaround in Iraq in 6 years is pretty short sighted.

The fact is when a country that actually has the MEANS to defend its own interests tries to it gets pissed on by public opinion. This happened in WWI with something called the berlin-baghdad railway. This is one of the ONLY reasons for war, self interest and economic gain. NO ONE ever fights for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The American Revolution was fought due to the fact that land merchants like the founding fathers wanted to settle land past Ohio when the British authorities forbade it by the order of the KING. They USED the issue of taxation to gain popular support and recruits. YES the US invaded IRAQ due to oil based reasons. SO FUCKING WHAT. Iraq stopped trading OIL in dollars the US wants OIL to be traded in dollars. North Korea stopped trading ALL commodities in USD and switched to euros. It is the prime interest of the government to look out for itself. The main reason that the United States can run up such a huge debt is because OPEC decided to trade in USD and ONLY USD. What I hate is all those patriotic liberal americans who say that their against war and oil and all that crap when it paid for their lifestyles. It is a NECCESSITY that the US control all oil trade to maintain the lifestyle for its citizenry. I dont give a FLYING FUCK about what Tom, Dick, and Harry think about the war in IRAQ because they are a bunch of improperly educated, ignorant, unpatriotic, unnationalistic(two different things people), and useless bunch of people. It takes 10,000 calories of oil today to make 1 calorie of good old american grown food.

To the rest of the world: I feel for you, but we have a right to defend our own interests. But hey tell ya what, when you guys eventually decide to bomb the shit out of the US. Ill be there with you as part of the Canadian troops XD.

As to the whole Iran giving weapons to terrorists in Iraq, get a clue and go over there. I WAS part of many groups that discovered Iranian supported insurgents all over Iraq. Just a reminder, the US Army is part of the US government and many Michael Moore says that they aren't but contrary to public opinion, he is not any part of the US government.

Just like us Americans, there are some bad seeds. Those that seek to go again everything others stand for. Islam has that also and 60% of the world's Muslims hate them for it. The problem is, the crazy section are the ones in charge and they have no problem sending thousands of their people to their deaths. A lot of people say the same of our leaders and all I have to say is, I know I was given a choice when I signed the paper making me a soldier. Many soldiers say "Hey, I didn't know their was going to be a WAR!!" and all I can say is then they shouldn't have signed their names. When you sign up to wear a uniform and get all the benefits that come with it, there is always a chance that you will have to step into harms way. Some people just can't do that, even though they said they would. Fanatics don't have that choice, they are taught from birth that this is what they should do and they die with a smile on their face as they blow themselves, us, and anyone else in the area to bits and pieces. I, on the other hand, have never been given a bomb and told to strap it too my chest to kill one foe and everyone else around them.
All this being said, Carbon, I invite you to ether visit these countries that you pretend to know something about or move the hell out of this one. Ether way, know facts, not theories when you speak up when grown ups are talking.
On a side note, I'm not a basic grunt in the military, though I have been before, so this isn't just my superiors telling me what to think. If someone wants to say otherwise about what is going on in Iraq, prove that you have been there. You have no leg to stand on otherwise. Don't trust the media to tell you, trust your eyes and if you can't use your own eyes, trust someone who's been there and isn't a coward.

Ghost_Prime understands what people like carbon and UEF soldier seem to not comprehend. War is horrible there is nothing good about it but there is good in the reasons we fight wars. Sadam was a Genocidal son af a bitch who killed his own people just because they had a slightly different belief. The only reason I sleep at night is because of soldiers that are fighting to keep us all safe. I find it amazing that there are some people that think the Americans are winning the war with Iraq.
There are some Iraqis that think that killing Americans in Iraq is easier than killing them in America and will continue to do so.

The serious players realise that the best way to get rid of them is to keep their heads down and once the Americans have gone, they can get on with the serious business of killing each other.

As I see it, their are two possible outcomes in Iraq.

The Iraqi army, trained and equipped by America consists of Sunis and Sheites. These will turn on each other.
After the civil war, the Sheites, backed by Iran, will be victorious and will form a fundamentalist State, similar to Iran. Possibly allied to Iran.

The other possibility, is that a strong military leader, backed by America will emerge from the Sunis and will form a military dictatorship. Sound familiar?

Sorry but this is simply propoganda its very like the story that from the first gulf war when Iraq invaded Kuwait that the Iraq soldiers took the incubators from the hospitals and left the babies to die - This simply did not happen.

The people and soldiers of Iraq , Iran , Israel and the US are not monsters and creating myths about how absolutly evil the enemy is does not help.

Remember in the middle ages they had the old myth that Jews stole and ritually slaughtered Gentile children , then ate them . Its a sad and horrible falsehood and creating new ones for Muslims is just as wrong as this one was then.

Oh and there are a few million Iraqi citizens who do not agree with the idea that they are better off today then before the war.

Embird, from your statement, I take it you have been there? Please let me know which cities you visited, I've been to most of them and killed very few Iraqis and I was in the Armored Cav for one of my tours (that's blow things up with tanks for those of you who don't know). I figured that you knew a bunch of Iraqis and have been to the country.
Or there's a chance they may form a powerful government that will rebound and become a world economic power like um...Germany or...Japan. Peaceful but powerful.

i am in favor of: intervening in regional conflicts when there is a reasonable expectation of peace if you do so (bosnian war, heavily armed modernized Serbs massacring both rag-tag Bosnian resistance groups and civilians)
i am not in favor of: randomly destabilizing secular countries for blatant nationalism/racism, oil, "good intentions" with no prior planning

I have high hopes for the US under an Obama presidency but to be honest this country has so far gone to tatters it's not worth living in anymore.
