Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Is it meat or is it mushroom?

It's June 6th, 2008 as I write this.

Like many, I've read the various forums - even those at 1C's and Katauri's websites.  There have been a hints and half-promises that we'll get a real release date but those come and go.

As much as I love Space Rangers 2 in it's current form, the version available to those of us that speak and read English should be updated with all the features in the latest Russian version released last year.

Am I hungry for this update?  Yes!

Space Rangers 2 has been, in my opinion, one of the best space adventures produced in a very long time.  Until or unless the Starflight III projects folks pull their thumbs out, this is it.

I can live without SR2 Reload/Reboot/v2.0/whatever-they-are-calling-it BUT it would be nice if someone could tell us that we're not going to get it and that we have to make do with what we have.

The d3dx9_31.dll issue only prevents planetary battles, but that is a problem still.

My fix was to take the version I had in my original SR2 directory (d3dx9_37.dll, I think) and rename it to d3dx9_31.dll; kind of a hack for backwards compatibility, but it's working quite well.

Where can you get actual tech support for this new expansion? The 1C, Cinemaware and Elemental Games sites appear to be woefully out of date, and their support forums are filled with a lot of fluff. The manual doesn't reference the changes in the expansion.

In particular, I find that the search fields for trade goods are either mislabeled, or functioning in a fashion that is prone to errors. I can't figure out to whom I need to speak about this issue.

I wish it was made a lot clearer that you can only buy this from North America, its rather annoying to have it error out on you after youve entered all your information and confirmed the order. It could at least tell you after youve given your billing address and before you enter your credit card information...

Have to say im rather upset that im allowed to buy the original but not the expansion from Stardock. At least I can get some comfort from the fact that the release doesnt quite work right yet.

:CONGRAT: couldn't actually believe it until i read it here in this thread!

an update to SR2 after looooong last! purchased via tokens and awaiting the download...

...i've discovered that jumping up and down for joy doesn't actually make the download go faster.

Looks like they just released an update as well. 2.004 went to 2.005. Can't seem to find out what was updated. Searching is still broken in the trade window.

Well a bit of buggy reality to spoil the fun. I have the CD version of SR2 and bought just the SR2: Reboot (2.005) off of Impulse. Ran right into the ""This application has failed to start because DebugMsg.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Realising that this is a small developer team and so I cut them a break because I have been waiting for a long time for this moment.

Solution:

a. made a full backup of the c:\Program Files\Space Rangers 2 folder

b. copy (and allow overwrite) the C:\Program Files\Cinemaware\Space Rangers 2 into C:\Program Files\

c. double-click the orignal Space Rangers 2 icon on my desktop to launch.

So far, so good. I can start a new game, enter planetary battles, etc.

I purchased the original space rangers 2 from direct2drive.
This version works fine without the add-on.

When I copy the files from the impulse add-on over, and run the rangers.exe file, it simply returns to desktop.

A file is generated in the errors folder. It says,

Strangely there is no new version of the captain1.pkg file that comes with the add-on, and the 1.3 version has no problem at all with this file.
Ben-Wah, I had the same error message when trying to run SR2: Reboot with the DVD version of SR2. It turns out that the file "1captain.pkg" is copied only if you choose the low resolution option during the initial installation.

All I had to do was copy the file from my original CD. You may have to re-install the original SR2 from your downloaded file and then check both resolution options when prompted.

I hope this helps you get up and running!

just want everyone to know- it works great now with the update. no more problems at all and planetary battles work fine. i downloaded both from impulse.

The update, however, doesn't allow me to archive Reboot, although it does remove the phantom Complete icon. I own both through Stardock, and the archive of Reboot always fails.

This is an issue due to how the upgrade works. Because it just copies over the directory, if I know archive SR2, it will actually be archiving SR2:R, because the directory contains the new stuff. However, restoring that archive WON'T tell Impulse that SR2:R is installed; it'll still offer it as a download. This is pretty dodge.

NO AUSTRALIA SUPPORT ----- BOOOOOOOO ---- whats the point of digital distribution if I can't get it.

I finally found the right forum.

I have the US (Cinemaware Marquee) CD version of SR2 (fething Starforce). That being said, having finally gotten into the swing of the game (after over a year of on and off playing) and learning about an active(ish) community and expansion, I figure I'll pick up the expansion before I restart again.

I see that Stardock is selling it as a digital download. While I am not the biggest fan of digital distribution, I also don't really fear it anymore (I blame Mount&Blade and Steam). So, I figure since I got SR2 so cheap anyway (12 bucks, including shipping), I might as well buy this to play with while I still have time. Then, if a retail copy ever comes out, I'll pick it up again after the price goes down (or GoGamer does a 48-hour madness).

So here are my questions:

1. Could someone just confirm that the Cinemaware Marquee version is compatible with Stardock's version of the expansion? It sounds like you guys did, but I would rather be safe than sorry.
2. Will I still have to deal with Starforce? Or do I run it through Impulse/whatever the older thing was called? I see people mentioning copy-pasting stuff and what not.
3. While we are at it, what are the terms of the download? Is it one of those limited number of download dealies, or is it like Steam where I can regrab it whenever I reformat/really need hard drive space?
4. This works in Vista (as much as the original SR2 did), right?

Thanks.

Hey can't answer all your questions, but I can answer at least the first two..

1. Could someone just confirm that the Cinemaware Marquee version is compatible with Stardock's version of the expansion? It sounds like you guys did, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Yes, however, I would recommend visiting this thread for installation instructions if you are going to download the Expanision only: WWW Link

2.
Will I still have to deal with Starforce? Or do I run it through Impulse/whatever the older thing was called? I see people mentioning copy-pasting stuff and what not.

Interesting question, maybe, maybe not, the Reboot installation should overwrite all the necessary files, and since Space Rangers 2: Reboot does not include Starforce, it shouldn't load up anymore.

hope this helps, download if you can, it adds some interesting stuff to an already great game, and hopefully you were into the Plantery Battles, cause to me, it looks like thats where most of the Meat of the Expansion was put into. Eventhough, it does say Unique equipment, although, I haven't really found this, unless the Artifacts are considered the unique equipment as I don't really remember that the original when I played it.

I'm another one who was told I couldn't buy this product because I'm Australian.

Does anybody know where I CAN buy the game in Australia?

You should post, or read, the log file: "########.log". That might give you/us a clue what is wrong.

Hi gang,

You must instruct Impulse to install Reboot over your existing Space Rangers 2 installation or you will have issues with missing files.  To do this, click the Impulse Orb -> Preferences -> Advanced Settings Folders -> Check Prompt for install directory.

We have tested this with retail and other versions of the game and it does work. A future Impulse update will help automate this so that it's handled largely on its own.

For those outside North America - Cinemaware only has rights to Space Rangers 2 in this territory, so we cannot sell it elsewhere. We're attempting to obtain rights from 1C for the rest of the world, but I cannot say when or if this will happen. As a workaround, if you can find someone in North America to by the game for you as a gift, that will work fine.

Thanks. I just started a new character in NWN2, but I will definitely buy this when I feel the need to restart that character again.

Thanks Yarlen.

I'm in no major rush.

If you at some point decide that you won't be able to get the rights, let us know and I'll start looking elsewhere.

Just an FYI.

I just bought the expansion. Before installing, I set the preferences so it would prompt me for install folder. When it prompted me, I told it to install to y:\space rangers 2\ which is where I have the CD version installed. After installation I check and find out that Impulse just completely ignored me and installed it to C:\program files\cinemaware\space rangers 2! I had to copy the stuff to my CD installation manually.

Do I need to start the game with the CD in the drive as before?
I also had the same issue as bman654 above this post. What a nightmare! At one point I said to hell with it and decided to just play the vanilla game. I couldn't even do that as I had a ton of Starforce errors. Then I was pissed - no new game, no old game. I finally got the start screen to start up this am just before work.

Edit: I see an earlier post that Starforce is not used in Reboot.
Can I safely use the Starforce Driver Removal Tool now?

allthumbs - yes you can.

bman - Just found that that's a bug which has been fixed internally (Impulse isn't respecting when you tell it to install stuff on a per item basis).  Until they publish a new version of Impulse with the fix, the workaround is to set your default games install directory to where you want SR2: Reboot to go. Apologies.  (:(

I'd also like to add that during installation, Impulse asked if I wanted a shortcut put on my desktop. I said yes. It never put a shortcut on the desktop. I had to manually do it.

Are the text and planetary missions offered on the startup screen the same ones offered in the sp game?

Yes, however, at the startup screen you can't play all of them right away, you have to beat the first couple within the startup screen to unlock the rest. However, you can encounter all of them that you can't play yet in the startup screen, in the actual campaign game you play and all..

Personally, I'd rather just experience it in the campaign game, as playing it there just seems a bit off, hehe.. :)
