Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Is it meat or is it mushroom?

It's June 6th, 2008 as I write this.

Like many, I've read the various forums - even those at 1C's and Katauri's websites.  There have been a hints and half-promises that we'll get a real release date but those come and go.

As much as I love Space Rangers 2 in it's current form, the version available to those of us that speak and read English should be updated with all the features in the latest Russian version released last year.

Am I hungry for this update?  Yes!

Space Rangers 2 has been, in my opinion, one of the best space adventures produced in a very long time.  Until or unless the Starflight III projects folks pull their thumbs out, this is it.

I can live without SR2 Reload/Reboot/v2.0/whatever-they-are-calling-it BUT it would be nice if someone could tell us that we're not going to get it and that we have to make do with what we have.

Alligator02, you can buy the expansion as a download, I just did and it's installing right now.

Or do you live somewhere that it's not available?

Alligator02, I got a serial number by purchasing the game here:

http://totalgaming.stardock.com/games/?id=sr2x (if you want to use tokens)

You can also get it here using the new Impulse system:

http://www.impulsedriven.com/browsecatalog.asp (if you want to use Impulse; no token purchases here)

I'am from Denmark. The Impulse store dosn't shows the expansion as a digital download - only in a box. There a other games as digital download.

okay what the hell, I've been looking forward to this expansion for months and now I find I can't buy it because I'm in the UK?
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PULLING, STARDOCK?

Christ, I thought you were different (and better) than the likes of Steam and Direct2drive and now I find you're exactly the same kind of money-mongering trash.
Thanks, really.

Just the expansion. For reference, the original game was about 1.2 GB.

odaharry, I'm not sure they've made it available through SDC yet, but I've gotten it to download through Impulse just fine.

I agree with rayadrel - What's this crap??? I bought SR2 via TG.net, and now I can't buy the expansion? Whatever happened to "Your game, your way - anytime, anywhere"? Stardock should sort this out soon or give us our money back (so we can try getting the whole package elsewhere), and either way give us some answers.

The people with the rights to distribute the expansion in the US may not be the same people with the rights to distribute the expansion in the UK. In other words, Cinemaware (the US folks) were ok with digital distribution of the expansion, but 1C (the UK folks) were not. Stardock can't make them be ok with it, so it's not Stardock's fault.

Just a guess, though.

i noticed there is an update for SPR2 from 1.30.001 to 1.30.003, do we need to update it first before the expansion?

So they're witholding the rights to a game they won't release?
I don't buy it. I think if Stardock really wanted to they'd make it available. Why is it that this problem has come up NOW? It never happened during the days of SDC.
Suddenly they switch to Impulse and *now* publishers get all stingy? Whatever.
This is just another case of Europe being hung out to dry.

I simply don't get this, why anyone thinks that turning potential customers away is good business? It's not like they would need to build any additional distribution channels or anything..

That some things might be out of Stardock's control is irrelevant. They handled the situation badly. When they posted that the expansion is upcoming, they should have clarified that it will only be available in the US. Either then or now, they should have explained the situation and apologized for it.
Most importantly - I purchased SR2 on the understanding that I will also be entitled to purchase the expansion when it becomes available. Since this is clearly not the case, the transaction is retroactively a fraud, and thus we should be getting our money back (or at the very least tokens). (IANAL or anything, this is just common sense.)

It probably has to do with the way publishers like to construct captive markets (with region protection, regional lockouts, etc.) and Europe is always the least respected and most ill treated captive market of the bunch.
Up till now, Stardock wasn't part of this farce. It's a shame this has changed.

Well I just have this to say guys: THIS IS HOW PIRACY STARTS.
That's not a threat, I loathe video game piracy. But you're not doing yourselves any favours by punching loyal consumers in the nose like this.

I in fact did the very same thing as you; purchase SR2 in anticipation of the expansion. I fully agree with you, we've been conned out of our money and betrayed.

I`m very, very disappointed. This expansion was probably the most important release I was looking forward to. Space Rangers 2 is one of the best games released in the last couple of years and I absolutely love it. I bought the game on the very same day it was released and today, after a long wait, an expansion was released. But not for Europeans! If we would get any legal way to buy it, any at all, I would do it. I would pay for the shipping from the US or I would settle for a downloadable version, but no, you don`t give us any way at all for getting the game legally? If we are not given any way to purchase the expansion, I probably have to get it in illegal ways. I`m sorry to say that, since I don`t like piracy. I`d feel especially bad for stealing such a great, non-mainstream game as Space Rangers, but if we are not given any other way of getting it, then that`s what I`ll have to do. I just hope that the expansion would become available for us soon. I can wait for another month or so, but not forever. I really want to play this game and I want to pay for it, but if they don`t want my money, I`m sure I can find the game some other way.

I'm sure Stardock would happily sell it to you if they could. If it's been withheld, then logically another publisher must be about to release it in your region (incidentally, it's time these regional publishing models were rethought IMO). 1C did state on their forums that they'd be making it available through their website this month.

It's not entirely reasonable to think buying the original from them should guarantee you can also get the expansion, but I do agree it would have been a good idea for them to make people aware up front that they *might* not get the rights to sell the upcoming (at the time) expansion to all regions. I'd suggest emailing customer support with the complaint (if you haven't already) rather than just posting it on the boards.

I feel for you. I promise not to tell you how great it is until you've had a chance to pick it up for yourself. :)

Localisation.

If you aren't in the US you can't buy it. I'm from the UK.

Same here. This is what I hate about localisation. Its a way for countries to hold its customers to ransom. Here in Australia the prices for software are terrible. I stopped buying locally when I saw what's available from overseas.

It also looks like Stardock's Impulse allows for charging at localised pricing as well. :(

Its a shame, now I've got spare tokens and nothing to purchase. :(

How does it 'decide' where you are? Could we make another account to 'gift' our primary? Spoof the IP lookup? Or is it a simple matter of changing region in Windows?

Oh and 'fcuk you' Stardock. And localised pricing too! There is now no point whatsoever to use Impulse as a store, hooray.

Not that it even works properly, but hey. Points for effort. :CONGRAT:

I couldn't get the expansion to work at first. I have the disk version of the vanilla game and was told that the expansion would work with it.

I tried copying the expansion over top of the vanilla folder. Running the exe just result in nothing happening.

I also tried reinstalling vanilla in its own folder and downloading the expansion into a different folder. But, launching resulted in an error - "This application has failed to start because DebugMsg.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." This lead me to think that it needs to be applied over top of the base install.

Then I got to looking into the root folder. There's a file in there called ########.log. It looks like it's a launch debug file. At the end it shows a launch failure... "Exception:Error openning package file [READ]:data\1captain.pkg". That's the file for the low res UI (800x600). So, I reinstalled with the low res UI option checked.

That fixed it! Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

Also, sorry that the Europeans can't buy this, but I'd wait and see what happens. I'm sure that Stardock has no control over this else they would be offering it. If we have it here in the states, surely it's coming to Europe, too.

It checks ip address and the billing country. Spoofing an ip will of course not work, since that will prevent a reply from coming to your computer. Using a proxy, however, will.
