Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Is it meat or is it mushroom?

It's June 6th, 2008 as I write this.

Like many, I've read the various forums - even those at 1C's and Katauri's websites.  There have been a hints and half-promises that we'll get a real release date but those come and go.

As much as I love Space Rangers 2 in it's current form, the version available to those of us that speak and read English should be updated with all the features in the latest Russian version released last year.

Am I hungry for this update?  Yes!

Space Rangers 2 has been, in my opinion, one of the best space adventures produced in a very long time.  Until or unless the Starflight III projects folks pull their thumbs out, this is it.

I can live without SR2 Reload/Reboot/v2.0/whatever-they-are-calling-it BUT it would be nice if someone could tell us that we're not going to get it and that we have to make do with what we have.

It checks ip address and the billing country. Spoofing an ip will of course not work, since that will prevent a reply from coming to your computer. Using a proxy, however, will.

Are there post-purchase checks? Will Stardock disable keys sold to those outside North America? I mean, I'd love to give them my money, but if it'll just result in my key being disabled (maybe even my whole account) I'll find another way.

While I think Stardock have mishandled this, if they had simply mentioned that it was still a Cinemaware gig we would have expected it. Cinemaware ARE the guys who didn't localise the post-1.3 patches, after all. I had actually assumed that this meant Cinemaware didn't own the rights anymore, since progress was being made.

I only have 1 token, and they're not selling them anymore. Good thing Stardock didn't bother to tell anyone it was NA-only, hey guys! :CONGRAT:

It's not entirely obvious how to get this with tokens (or I'm just being dumb, equally possible!) For anyone, having trouble, you need to go here:

http://totalgaming.stardock.com/store/newreleases.aspx

This will let you buy with tokens.

To download, though, you'll need to download Impulse since it doesn't seem to show up in Stardock Central.

That's a really good question! You've got me worried now...I hope I'm not going to lose access to all my games when I move from the US in a couple of years!

Well, I wanted to buy Political Machine and the Space Rangers Expansion. Since I can't get the latter (was looking forward to it for ages), I will make it a point not to buy the former either. Way to go to, Stardock, you are now officially on my negative list together with Steam. And yes, it is entirely your fault, no one said you had to take a deal like that, not to mention that you could at least have told us that it's NA only.

I couldn't get the expansion to work at first. I have the disk version of the vanilla game and was told that the expansion would work with it.I tried copying the expansion over top of the vanilla folder. Running the exe just result in nothing happening.I also tried reinstalling vanilla in its own folder and downloading the expansion into a different folder. But, launching resulted in an error - "This application has failed to start because DebugMsg.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." This lead me to think that it needs to be applied over top of the base install. Then I got to looking into the root folder. There's a file in there called ########.log. It looks like it's a launch debug file. At the end it shows a launch failure... "Exception:Error openning package file [READ]ata\1captain.pkg". That's the file for the low res UI (800x600). So, I reinstalled with the low res UI option checked. That fixed it! Hope this helps anyone with the same problem. Also, sorry that the Europeans can't buy this, but I'd wait and see what happens. I'm sure that Stardock has no control over this else they would be offering it. If we have it here in the states, surely it's coming to Europe, too.

i cant get the game to work either and i have the original sr2 download ver from stardock. it works fine. i downloaded and installed reboot and after i run it i get the same error-This application has failed to start because DebugMsg.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." reinstalling doesnt fix it-, its just missing a bunch of files in the reboot dir. i dont know if the expansion is supposed to link the files to the old game or what but it doesnt work. i verified the install of reboot and everything in impulse.im gonna re download both games thru impulse and see what happens... This is rediculous stardock! ive been downloading and installing and redownloading since 11 am this morning and its almost 8pm now and the game still doesnt work yet!

Try copying the files in the Reboot folder into the folder for the main game (overwriting all files) and launch from the main game folder. That worked for me.

I encountered the same problem as well, pretty lame, however, it does looks like I fixed it, here's what i did..

In impluse, you should see an update for the orginial space rangers 2, so make sure you download and update that..

Then once you've done that, download the SPace Rangers 2 Expansion, after it gets automatically installed, I think this is where the problem lies. It seems to put it in a completly seperate directory from the Original Space Rangers 2 folder. So basically what needs to be done, is copy and paste everything thats in your Space Rangers 2 Expansion folder, to the Orginal Space Rangers 2 folder. (If you don't know where your Space Rangers 2: Reboot folder is, just right click on that logo in impluse on the reboot when installed, and click the open application folder) When doing that, that will put the necessary files to run Reboot when you double click on the Rangers.exe icon in the orginal space rangers 2 folder.

Hope that helps.. Obviously you know'll know it worked when you see the Spance Rangers 2 Reboot in the main screen with the orginal logo as well, also it will say version 2.0, and it also has quick launches to the Planetery Battles and Quests in the game from the main screen..

Guys, that's hilarious. You have to overwrite SR2 with SR2:R even after a download, or Reboot doesn't work? I'm almost glad I can't buy it... from here.

Argh! Impulse doesn't work on Win2k so here's hoping they update SDCentral to add it to the list of games there. I purchased it with tokens, I just can't download and install it. :(

i tried that already. overwriting files will get the game to run but u cant play planetary battles this way. not from the main screen or in game. u cant click on planetary battles from main screen and in game when the mission comes up it will be greyed out so u cant select it! (:(

How does it handle the SR2, SR2:R and SR2:C thing? Maybe if you have both, it gives you the option to download 'SR2: complete' which is the safer way?

Hmm, not sure whats going on there, I just played through the tutorial part as we speak, and I was able to do the training mission. As well, if you look at the quick launch screen, i see the First 3 selectable in each, so i'm assuming the others that are greyed out, you either have to unlock them in the main campaign first, or beat the first 3 that are highlighted.

As for which version is better and all, I'm sure the Space Rangers: Complete Version doesn't have this problem, but why should i have to buy it at $40.00, when i already brought the original (From Total Gaming too no less) way back when.. So far so good for me at least, so we'll see as I play more tomorrow, however, this kind of problem should be fixed, and stardock is usually good at solving these kinds of problems, so hopefully that will be corrected.

Ohh Hint, Hint, I never had this problem with your older Stardock Central network! :),

i uninstalled both games.i redownloaded sr2 and then reboot. i verified the install of sr2- said it was installed correctly. then i downloaded reboot and verified it and again it said it was installed correctly. i launched reboot and it said- this ap failed to start because d3dx9_31.dll was not found. reinstaling may fix the problem.- but the game launches anyway. still u can not select the box for planetary battles on the main start screen and in the game cant select the planetary missions either as they are greyed out. after reboot is installed space rangers2 complete appears in impluse and if u verify installation it says-space rangers2 complete is not installed correctly. please look for an application update. there is NO update. Also i verified the installation of sr2 again and now it says space rangers2 is not installed correctly, when b4 i downloaded and installed reboot, it said it was! im using win vista ultimate 32 bit if it matters. i dont know what else to do. i spent the whole day trying to get this game to work- over 12 hours!

Well, my download has failed twice so far, so let's hope that third time will be a charm.

I'm trying to maintain an open mind about this new system, but it seems to be a bit of a dog (at present time). Perhaps if all the messages here weren't about either unavailability (which isn't really Stardock's fault) or incompatability I wouldn't have such a grim outlook.

Perhaps once I get the darn thing downloaded properly I'll be an exception to the rule and it'll be smooth Rangerin'... but I wouldn't put money on it from what I'm reading here.

Uh-huh! Sounds like someone at the programmer/distributor end failed spectaculary in checking how the d*mn thing works and publishing the instructions.

Somehow not being able to download doesn't sound that bad right now ;)

Okay, with manual repositioning I got the damn thing to work. As suggested, I copied the expansion assets to the root directory of the original game (CD version) and everything appears to function (including the RTS segments).

Good luck, y'all.

A friend in the US gifted me the game, so I've had a bash at it.

Amusingly, the game doesn't check dependencies; I had SR2 installed already, but from before an Impulse reinstall so it didn't know. DL'ing Reboot gave me a folder full of patch files - and it turns out the 'expansion' makes you download slightly-modified datafiles.

However, that's pretty weak. GC2 detects if you have previous required versions installed and prompts you to install them, why not SR2?

Also, once I had both components installed, 'Space Rangers 2 Complete' appeared in my Impulse as 'installed'. I couldn't archive Reboot, but I could archive Complete... but because I down own Complete, I can't restore the archive (it silently fails)! Brilliant!

Since you can't queue downloads on Impulse, I'll have to pull down SR2 again tonight and do SR2:R tomorrow morning; hopefully then it'll a) work b) not invent games I don't own and c) let me archive so I don't have to download the fcuking thing again. I have a directory with a fully-functional version of SR2:R (by doing as others have said, and copying the SR2:R files into my pre-existing SR2 directory) and it's hell annoying to have to download 2GB instead of telling Impulse 'hey here it is' and 'can I archive it now plz'.

I suspect that in their rush to copy Steam they forgot that Impulse needs to, you know, actually work.
I too had big problems downloading Reboot (yes I, another unworthy non-American found a way) and in fact couldn't get it to download properly until I downloaded SR2 Complete instead.
Under what circumstances did you get the Complete option to appear? It appeared for me once Reboot had been installed, but it was flagged 'installed' already. I removed Reboot to try and use the Complete icon to download the whole package (and hopefully work) but the Complete icon has since disappeared.
I'm not sure, I bought Reboot outside of Impulse with tokens then started Impulse up and both the icons for Reboot and Complete were there.
Maybe being gifted it has messed it up somehow for you. :/
Reply #73 Top
I'm not sure? I added the key manually, and Complete appeared AFTER I'd installed Reboot. Meh, I'm not fussed; I've already got it working - I just want a functional archive so I can avoid downloading it again later. The archive I made of Complete doesn't work, I assume because I don't -currently- have Complete on my menu thingo.

I had this problem, too. It's not actually an issue with Impulse, but with your computer - you have some DirectX9 files missing. Try this:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/directx/aa937788.aspx

(Don't worry if you have Directx10, you won't be "downgrading". The two versions don't conflict.)

Hmm, from the way it sounds here, you didn't manually copy the contents from the Space Rangers 2: Reboot folder to your Space Ranges 2 original folder..

the only other thing I can suggest is just make sure you are doing exactly that, copying the original space rangers 2 folder into the SPace Rangers 2: Reboot folder will not work, cause naturally you are overwritting the newer files with the older files... So make sure you are copying the Reboot folder to the Space Rangers 2 Folder ...
