Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Space Rangers 2 Reloaded/Reboot/v2.0

Is it meat or is it mushroom?

It's June 6th, 2008 as I write this.

Like many, I've read the various forums - even those at 1C's and Katauri's websites.  There have been a hints and half-promises that we'll get a real release date but those come and go.

As much as I love Space Rangers 2 in it's current form, the version available to those of us that speak and read English should be updated with all the features in the latest Russian version released last year.

Am I hungry for this update?  Yes!

Space Rangers 2 has been, in my opinion, one of the best space adventures produced in a very long time.  Until or unless the Starflight III projects folks pull their thumbs out, this is it.

I can live without SR2 Reload/Reboot/v2.0/whatever-they-are-calling-it BUT it would be nice if someone could tell us that we're not going to get it and that we have to make do with what we have.

I guess if you want to experiment or play them multiple times it's a nice feature. I hear you on the "rather do it in the campaign, though".

I'd also like to add that during installation, Impulse asked if I wanted a shortcut put on my desktop. I said yes. It never put a shortcut on the desktop. I had to manually do it.

If you're using Vista, they tend to appear after a reboot for some reason. On XP, you need to hit F5 on your desktop to force a refresh. Both are scheduled for some work.

Will there be any documentation on the use of the new features/changes?

If you've only played ver 1.3 before, then there's a long changelist here:

http://elementalgames.com/forum/msg.php?lang=eng&forum=rangers&theme=484&&page=2

page 2 - changelist from ver 1.4 to 1.7. Ver 1.8 didn't introduce changes.
It's a long and wandering thread and a quick look didn't reveal a detailed changelist for ver 2 except some introductory notes.

At the last page someone told that he had translated a changelist with Babelfish  :) and I understood that he had found it in the gamefiles. Don't have the expansion myself, so can't comment.

In fact, the change list posted there was translated by a russian to give people an Idea of what new features the expansion would bring. But to save himself work, he did not translate all of it, and skipped the instructions on how to use the new features, since the expansion was not yet released anyway.
Which is why I had to use a babelfish translation of that same changelog, in order to be able to read said instructions.

I'm afraid that outside of the Babelfish translation that Netriak posted, I don't have any other info and no more is forthcoming.

I assume thats for the original Space Rangers 2 changes right or are those changes also in Reboot as well? If not, I am aware that there is techinally up to Version 1.8 in Russia for Space Rangers 2, but I remember stating that you can't really download that, since its incompataible with the US Version, or it changes the text to russian, not sure which one. Plus, since we now have Reboot not sure if downloading the other versions would be wise to begin with, as it will most likly overwrite the Reboot EXE and maybe this stuff is already included in Reboot..

On a sidenote, I really hope the game sells well, cause I would totally love to see another Space Rangers game hit our market if possible! I even think Space Rangers 3 (Or maybe that was their version of Reboot, aka Reloaded?) hit Russia in the fall of last year, but then the actual company that made the game went under, so bah! :(

Space rangers Reboot is based on the latest russian version. So yes, all those fixes are included in the reboot expansion, although the Russian version already had them pre-reboot.

Could someone confirm this. Whenever i try to select purchase unique ship at a pirate base, SR2 CTDs. Anyone else have the same bug?
Yes, when you try to purchase a unique ship the game crashes to desktop. That is a known issue, along with the problem with the filters for the goods-search.
See this thread for more information and for a download link to the patch I made for these issues.

For those outside North America - Cinemaware only has rights to Space Rangers 2 in this territory, so we cannot sell it elsewhere. We're attempting to obtain rights from 1C for the rest of the world, but I cannot say when or if this will happen. As a workaround, if you can find someone in North America to by the game for you as a gift, that will work fine.

Hello Yarlen,
this is very unfortunate, but i have two questions.

1) Will it be possible to install the "1C Worldwide release version" over my Stardock version, if i have to buy this at my local retailer?

2) As i do not have any personal contacts in the US, would it possible that i pay you personally via paypal upfront and you gift me the expansion?

Overall i'm quite dissapointed, of cause firstly by the publisher, but also a bit by Stardock that supports publishers that try to build virtual borders to protect their various pricing structures and antique distribution channels.
I hope this will not end as with Steam or Direct2drive, where in the later you can almnost not download any software at all, as they are restricted to the US, Canada or UK, or as with Steam, where you pay 10-15$ extra + taxes for i.e. a german cut version.

Regards
Christoph

cmoormann -

1) I don't see why not...

2) I'm afraid not. We are legally not allowed to sell the game to those outside North America (and I don't have a PayPal account). It's not about building artificial borders, it's just business. Cinemaware does not have any rights to the game outside our territory, and so we do not (since we get the game from Cinemaware). This is very typical in the gaming industry and normal practice legally.

Cinemaware and Stardock are investigating the possibility of obtaining a worldwide license from 1C for selling SR2. However, I don't know when or if this will happen.

Same situation here in Germany. I give up Stardock at this time and wil ask for a refund of my complete purchase. "Your game, your way - anytime, anywhere" - yes and tomorrow the activation servers are unreachable out of Europe. Regards WeisserWalFisch

Umm...there aren't any "activation servers."  Not sure what you're referring to.
probably the impulse download servers which also act as "activation servers" in the sense that they validate the product key when you type it in.

Anyone know if CinemaWare will release a box version of Reboot or Complete? (Preferably without SF though...)

If I can get SF-free Hardcopies, I'd go that route (even though I already have the old CinemaWare CD version of SR2)...

I'm a US citizen in the Armed Forces...But I'm stationed in Japan currently, so I can't purchase the game.

I understand the business model of not being allowed to sell outside of a region for licensing reasons; business is business...

But the way of verifying the Region of a purchaser kinda bothers me. I'm a tad bit more used to Billing Address determining my region, rather then the IP address I get from my ISP.

Granted, a Billing address can be spoofed...(Get a CC and at a later point, change the billing address attached to it.)

*sigh* I still prefer hardcopies in DVD/CD format, but companies always need to find new ways to conduct business...

Here's hoping for a Collection release on DVD or something in the near future...(And may the Patron Saint of PC Gaming bless it with no copy-right protection scheme other than maybe a CD-check...)

Oh, that, and more regular updates to the game for everybody! (lack of updates to the US SR2 was kinda disconcerting...I'm used to at least one patch to a PC game during its lifetime.)

I believe Cinemaware will be putting out a retail version, but not until sometime mid-2009.
 Mid-2009?! :SURPRISED:

Does Cinemaware now consist of one man and his dog, with the dog doing most of the work?

I asked this question in another topic but I figured I'd better cross post it to here too.

Is Impulse going to the exclusive distributors of Space Rangers 2: Reboot? As I said in the other topic I'm just not big on digital only distribution. An there is no CD offered via this service. :/
Reply #124 Top
We only sell via digital distribution for 3rd-party titles.

Yarlen:

As a workaround, if you can find someone in North America to by the game for you as a gift, that will work fine.

How does that work? I have several colleagues and friends in the USA that would be willing to help me. How can they buy the game for me as a gift so that I can download it and play it or do they need to download it for me and then send it over?

As a final option: Would it be possible to buy the game myself with my laptop next time I'm in the USA? Will I then still be able to download the game when I get back to Australia?

thanks for any explanation.

regards,

Branko
