Round 8 Details

This is an ALL VICTORY Round!!!

This Round will take place on a SMALL map with FIVE Opponents.

Since this is an ALL VICTORIES Round its setup is different than previous rounds. A Team is required to get a Victory of Each Type (Conquest, Alliance, Technological, and Influence) to receive the Base 8 points. Also, unlike 'normal' rounds, All Victory Rounds only allow for a Bonus Point for fastest game and highest scoring game in each category (so still only 8 individual bonus points available).

At the end of this round, which will end at 11:59:59pm FORUM TIME ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30TH, 2008 we plan on holding a Draft. Setup for the Draft will be the same as before. More details will be given once Round 8 is over.

Good Luck Everyone!

Sorry Team A for the low score, I finished in March or Feb, been working very late .

No problem, Tech is low scoring by nature. I'm just glad you got the submission in on time. What's the matter, you couldn't have waited another 23 seconds?    You sure know how to make a captain nervous. But you did get it in and that's all that counts.  :CONGRAT:

No problem, tech is low scoring by nature and 19K is actually not a particularly low score anyway. At least you got the game in and with 23 seconds to spare.  :CONGRAT:

Kzinti had notified me about possible need for a back up about three weeks ago. We gave it until the 20th at which point I selected randomly from the known active players on his team, and still ended up with Kzinti

Ah yes. Very good. This does make it explicit.  :CONGRAT:

However your interpretation of that specific corollary rule leaves a little to be desired. I would think that a team would only have to settle for a 1 point win of the wrong type only if they had no "extra" games of the correct type (and assuming that you hadn't already designated Kzinti to do a backup). If there was at least one "extra" game of the correct type then the random selection should be made only from among them. This makes the most sense to me and tends to penalize teams the least, anyway that would be how I interpret it.

Yet more subtle distinction that is moot in this case.

Darn it, I didn't get my game completed. That leaves Team C at 2 out of 6 submissions... I could finish this game today and submit it.

Its a bit much to ask, I know, but can the round be extended for one more day?

Ignore above post.

I would be willing to allow it just on the principle of general goodwill, however it's not going to make a difference to the outcome of the round or the season. It did seem like Team C did run into a bit of bad luck at the end but other than that Team C had a very good season and one bad round doesn't spoil that.

I think we all need a break and have a draft and start out a new season rested and refreshed.

BTW edit does seem to be a crap shoot lately, and where are our medals anyway?

One thing I want to mention is that Sunburn4 did show up at the A Team's private forums and mention that he would be unable to submit a game this month.

So basically while he did not submit a game I don't think that necessarily means that he has dropped out of the league.

Also a comment he made is very instructive and it makes a point that I'd like to address. Basically he looked at some of the A Teams discussion and really didn't have a clue what we were even talking about. If you take an honest look at the league, even leaving out the so called "experts", you realize that the ordinary members of this league are in fact experts themselves and this can be very daunting to "ordinary" players.

I use quotes on these terms because they are so subjective but the point I want to stress is that people should not feel intimidated by the cast of characters we have in this league. We all put our pants on one leg at a time, and more importantly, the more of an "expert" a person is, in general the more likely that person will be willing to help out the "ordinary" player.

The MVL is really a free GalCiv2 education taught by professors of the game at the highest levels. Every GalCiv2 player that's interested in improving their game should avail themselves of this free education.

@FireBender: if you were just short the one game, ie like Kzinti, I'd be definitely willing to allow it, but with such a shortfall it wouldn't matter to either the Round or Seasonal totals. The Crusaders have been a very competitive team, and I give you major props for playing so well.

@Mumble: My interpretation of the corollary was if the decision had to be made after the Round had ended, in which case yes, only those games that fit the proper specifications would be have randomly selected. It is when the decision is made prior to a round ending that a player may be randomly selected to play a back-up game.

Also, as for Sunburn, yes I do recall you notifying me that he was in for the upcoming rounds, good news to my ears.

Finally, that was a really nice post (231) and I completely agree :CONGRAT:

Total agreement with the distinction between before and after the round ending. Certainly the best course is as it was done, which is for the captain to express concern prior to the rounds end and a backup game to be assigned.

But I would clarify that the after round criteria should be first to randomly select among games of the correct win type if there are any such games, but if there are no wins of the correct type only then would the selection be made from wins of the incorrect type. This applies for both All Victory and Single Victory rounds.

I don't think I expressed this two tiered approach to after the fact selection in the rules very well. But I do think if the situation had arose we would have come to this conclusion.

Oh well, we'll still pwn you in Season 3. Enjoy your luck. ;)

I'm still itching to see who pulled ahead though...

EDIT(yey, it works): I might be unavailable for the next two weeks so I'm naming Ferral as the captain till then. There was such a thing as a franchise player, right?
poor Ferrel...everyone keeps thinking your feral; but I don't recall you ever being domesticated in the first place

Doh! I meant Ferrel. lol

Ta-may-toes, ta-maw-toes.

Not sure if a captain is needed over the next month since it's an optional bonus round, but I'll keep the chair warm anyway. I am planning on participating in that round.

no worries FB. maybe no one would want to admit it, but i think team C really managed to give a good scare to the rest of the league throughout the entire round, especially considering some of these things:

we don't have any of the "big names" in the GC2 metaverse. none of the crusaders have posted near-million point games. we've been a very understated group of players.

we've managed to be very coherent as a team, up until this round. sometimes even a dedicated group falls on hard times, and i think it's great that we've managed to do so well so consistently before this.

several of our players have been with the MVL from its earliest stages, and stuck with it through high times and low.

it's especially worth mentioning how far Amalric and Idazen have come since joining the MVL--mostly, i believe, to our impecable team spirit. Amalric, Idazen, i personally want you both to know that i think you're very strong players.

i'm not pontificating at this length merely to help my team feel better. winning was never very important to me, and so personally i require no consolation. my motivation is rather to describe what i feel has been the best part of my participation in the MVL. obviously i don't know the extent to which other teams have had similar experiences through this season, but i'm sharing because i hope to help make next season as good for every team as this season was for team C.

yes, i'll be on sabbatical for a round or maybe two. but i do look forward to coming back to the MVL after i've given GC2 a bit of a rest, and therefore i remain dedicated to keeping the league vibrant and enjoyable for everyone.

cheers,
dys

When will the bonus round start BTW? For the future, I think having a break of at least 2 or 3 days between rounds (or maybe even a week) would be good.

I would REALLY appreciate y'all giving me the next few days free so I can finish focusing on studying for my last two exams. I can be ready with the Bonus Round come Monday without any issues though.

I will post these over in the Results thread also, and Neilo will update that OP when he has time, but the Round 8 scores are as follows:

The A-Team

Individual BP's = 3 BP's
Average Score = 35,560 = Team Score 2 BP's
Average Speed = 5.25 years
Average Submission = 16
Total Score = 13

The Bladerunners

Individual BP's = 0 BP's
Average Score = 13,170
Average Speed = 2.5 years = Team Speed 1 BP
Average Submission = 8.5 = Team Submission 1 BP
Total Score = 10

The Celestial Crusaders

Individual BP's = 0 BP's
Average Score = 14,585 = Team Score 1 BP
Average Speed = 2.5 years = Team Speed 1 BP
Average Submission = See Explanation*
Total Score = 6

* The Crusaders had by average the second lowest submission time if only taking their submitted games. However, by counting the non-submitted required victory-type games as the last submissions, Team C no longer carried that position. This method was used in the past where late or no-shows were considered to be the final submission to the round. It is something that should have been in the rulebook and once Mumble and I have some time, we'll finesse that.

The Domination of Death

Individual BP's = 1 BP
Average Score = 14,235
Average Speed = 4.75 years
Average Submission = 14.5
Total Score = 9

The Eternal Villainy

Individual BP's = 4 BP's
Average Score = 13,527
Average Speed = 1.2 years = Team Speed 2 BP's
Average Submission = 4.4 = Team Submission 2 BP's
Total Score = 16

The Eternal Villainy is the victor for Round 8

As for Season Two....

Team A - 62 (460,825)

Team B - 49 (256,850)

Team C - 56 (275,965)

Team D - 53 (203,600)

Team E - 65 (280,615)

Congratulations to the Eternal Villainy for its victorious debut in Season Two; and a very strong "Cheers!" to all the other teams and players for playing so well.

Haha, congrats guys. With the way the submissions were going I was actually thinking the A-team would win. Well, good job anyhow.

A sincere apology on behalf of Team C for not being there to give you any real competition. ;)

Silver, any ETA on the bonus round? If not, that's fine. Just curious where we're at :).
