Round 8 Details

This is an ALL VICTORY Round!!!

This Round will take place on a SMALL map with FIVE Opponents.

Since this is an ALL VICTORIES Round its setup is different than previous rounds. A Team is required to get a Victory of Each Type (Conquest, Alliance, Technological, and Influence) to receive the Base 8 points. Also, unlike 'normal' rounds, All Victory Rounds only allow for a Bonus Point for fastest game and highest scoring game in each category (so still only 8 individual bonus points available).

At the end of this round, which will end at 11:59:59pm FORUM TIME ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30TH, 2008 we plan on holding a Draft. Setup for the Draft will be the same as before. More details will be given once Round 8 is over.

Good Luck Everyone!

And I am the captain of the A Team now as well, but no big deal.

However, on the bonus point issue there are still only 4 total speed bonus points and 4 total score bonus points. It's just that in an All Victory round only the single fastest and single highest score per type gets a bonus point. To quote the Rulebook:

Individual Bonus Points

In the case of a Single Victory round a single bonus point is granted for the 4 top scoring games and the 4 fastest games.

In the case of an All Victory round a single bonus point is given to the top score and the fastest game in each of the 4 different victory conditions.

The fastest games are determined by the number of years reported by the metaverse. Game speed ties are broken by score and score ties are broken by speed. Any games tied in both speed and score will be left unbroken and both players will receive the identical bonus.

A few points about current membership.

Berzelius and RexDaddy did not submit a game in round 7. If I recall correctly both had submitted a game in Round 6. It's certainly reasonable to keep their seats warm for this round but I suggest that each of their team captains should make some effort to contact them.

Also we should keep an eye on whether or not they do submit anything for the current round and even perhaps consider their teams (B and D) to be the first candidates to receive any potential members.

I had Haart listed as a Team D member but if I remember this situation correctly he had requested to join but simply never submitted a game in the last two rounds so I think it's right to drop him from my list. CornhuskerMac also hasn't submitted a game for the last two rounds. I don't recall him announcing anything but at this point I think it's right to drop him from my list of Team B members.

Califdude did seem to storm off uncharacteristcally and it's probable that he's gone for good since he's not opened the PM I sent him but if he does happen to return I would assume that there's a place for him on the A Team. He technically did submit a game for round 7. Although it was an auto submit I do know it was his intended league game.

The only other membership items are Motti and TGE who are both expected back from sabbatical next round and GalenEvil who has made it clear that he's all ready to rejoin for this round.

Anyone else know of any potential membership concerns? I do believe that the list in the OP is accurate with the caveat's about Berzelius and RexDaddy noted.

Huh? You mean just the activity?

Actually I just had to go to a backup image of my drive because of a pretty vicious virus/spyware attack. I had let my firewall/antivirus software expire but had no issue for a good period of time as I only frequent reputable sites.

However I was at imageshack getting postable images for my AAR and that hosed my current drive image. It was pretty dramatic, that drive image is toast unless I can do some forensics on it. Luckily I had just submitted my league game and my gigantic game and had an image from only two months ago.

I thought Imageshack was reputable. I suppose the attack could have been directed from elsewhere at my IP but that seems a bit remote. Has anyone else had any difficulty with Imageshack?

I use photobucket myself; sucks bout the virus, hope you got it all taken care of. that is one thing i am willing to spend money on (anti-virus software)

Never any difficulty with Imageshack here, though I can't say I like all the cookies it tries to save. (Fairly positive it's Imageshack that does that...)

Running AVG alongside Comodo with Spybot S&D being supported by SpywareBlaster, albeit on Firefox.

Not to get into another discussion on it, but I just want to say I'm glad you guys resolved the issues in the rule thread, and I have to admit I am pleasantly surprised by the resulting rules. Almost makes me want to join the MVL myself...we'll see if I have the time. Life's going to be even more crazy than it has been for the next week or two, and I haven't even played a game in over a month.

Amazingly, I haven't even had time to suffer withdrawal symptoms.

I have an account at imagshack and never had a problem. I squashed a virus/trojan just a few days ago, but it came from another site(AVG caught it as soon as the page loaded :) ).

Looks like an interesting round. I had actually forgotten about the all victory rounds it had been so long since we had one.

A comment and suggestion about the draft after round 8.

First off I haven't heard any objection to a draft yet which is different than last time so it does seem that the league is ready for one. I would suggest that anyone that thinks this is a bad idea at least make their opinion known.

However assuming that the league is in favor of proceeding with a draft at the end of the round, I would like to make a suggestion. I propose that each team captain be able to designate one player as their "franchise" player that would be protected from being selected in the draft.

With that in place then we could proceed with two rounds of draft just like last time and then have random assignment for everyone else or we could possibly cut it down to only one round of draft.

Anyone else like this idea?

Awesome...I've been hoping an all-victory round would happen sometime soon. :) I think they are more interesting.

@Mumblefratz: hmmmmm...i'll mull it over while i'm in class and get back to your suggestion later; hopefully someone else will chime in with thoughts by then

I actually have some reservations about a draft, but it's just that I really like the Teammates I have. An entirely personal reason that is over shadowed by what is good for the league  ;) .

I like the "franchise" Tag as well, but I think that's something the captains and league officials should agree on more than anything.

Mumble: I like the idea, that might preserve some of the existing team synergy and make for a few tough decisions when a team has more than one strong player.

Maybe if all captains could get organised into an IRC meeting, we could even have a full draft, with trading players and draft picks and everything. :D
Reply #21 Top
Haha, draft picks. Thats would be funny. Trading a future 1st round pick for an up and coming MVL All-Star?
Yeah, so I've been playing Eastside Hockey Manager a lot lately... At least I'm dominating the DEL. :D

Ultimately, I think how far we want to go is more an issue of the League officials and the team leaders, as it is they who would have to organise a meeting and go through the whole draft. I like the idea, though. Might even be another motivation for the players to improve their scores, knowing that they could become the subject of heated negotiations.

It's just that I think if we have a draft, we should have a proper, full draft. That would make for more even teams than a part-draft part-random assignment. And once we include 'franchise tags', it's only a small step to trading players between seasons and trading draft picks.

I would even go as far as volunteer in helping to organise the whole thing. ;)

There's a number of good reasons to keep the part random aspect of the draft. The most important reason is to avoid hurting anyone's feelings that otherwise would be selected very late.

Also last draft there was generally a clear 1st round choice but the 2nd round it was very difficult to distinguish a "best" choice. Part of this is perhaps because the league didn't have much history on which to base a selection. Perhaps now we do have a better handle on the range of abilities that warrents a deeper draft, but I still see no reason to go right down to the bitter end so that there is someone that's inevitably the last to be chosen.

When folks like Motti, Wyndstar, Iztok get franchised or drafted in the first round generally no one gets offended that they might be considered not quite as "skilled" as such folks. However the deeper the draft goes then the more potentially devisive choices get. Anyway part of the benefit and challenge of the League is to help your teammates improve their game.

Also you never know, don't forget that Tom Brady was a 6th round draft pick that wasn't good enough to be a starter in college and look where he is now.

[edit] One additional point I want to make is that I am obviously very happy with the A Team as it's currently constituted and would franchise all of my teammates if I had the choice but I do see the benefit of mixing up the league and I do believe that this mixing eventually results in a stronger set of players than would result from everyone just staying with the same team. [/edit]

The part about hurt feelings can certainly be true. The solution would be a closed draft, where the players only get to see the final outcome (that's why I proposed IRC).

Looking at the numbers on the team list again, I don't think that we're that far off:

- 1 team captain (fixed)
- 1 franchise player (fixed)
- 2 draft picks

That means that four out of five or six players are already accounted for under the current way of doing a draft. The remaining players probably won't make that much a difference between being randomly assigned or drafted.

I of course can't speak for others, but I don't know if being one of the few players 'unimportant' enough to be randomly assigned isn't actually worse than being drafted at a later stage.

That way, you can either get in your old team (they'd probably prefer you to a yet unknown team player) or at least you know whom to beat in order to improve your game. Or you can compare the games and see that maybe a team goes for fast wins only and therefore had to pick someone else.

I think we should have a draft with each team getting two picks, and the rest assigned randomly. No franchise players, as I think its better for the league and individual players to more completely mix things up for a new season.

The idea of getting all the captains together at once was mentioned for the last draft, but I think with everyone in different time zones, getting people all together at the same time proved problematic.
