This is an interesting discussion on Research, would you mind confirming that the bonus' work as I expected: Say I start with a race with a 40% Research bonus through picks and party. I have Labs with a capacity for 2,000 research points I fund Tech at 50% so actually only produce 1,000 points My 40% Research bonus adds 400 points I pay 1,200 bc to get 1,400 points.

Well said! I bet most people here would love to be in your position and be able to produce the games that you want to play, not the games that the "console generation" seem to buy by the bucket load. I play games for fun and relaxation and so enjoy turn-based, RTS simply don't appeal (no, not even SINS even though I did buy it). As to the "appearance of arrogance": I'm a fellow IT professional and I know that I've grown steadily less tolerant of so-called "IT experts" who think that bec
[quote]The inflation of tech-cost is a known issue, or at least Brad knows about it, it can't be solved no matter how much you fiddle with the sliders, nor by turning your entire empire into one big god damn university, as every time you research a new tech the cost of all remaining techs rise.I turned all of the resources and tiles of my 80 planet empire towards research, and Stingers II still needed three turns to be researched, all the while I should be eating my way through the missile branc
I've just won a Military Conquest on 1.05 in a Gigantic galaxy at Crippling and only conducted 2 invasions all game! All I needed to do was wipe out the majority of the AI fleet, demand a few planets for peace & watch the rest culture flip. I'm not sure how this can be addressed. You could say that with no fleets the AI can't defend himself & therefore surrenders, but on the other hand I didn't have enough Combat transports to invade many planets with 30Bn+ pop & so wouldn't have been able t
Yike! Looking at the above scoring chart it would look like having a large Pop Growth bonus would be a bad thing. I usually go for +70% at start & have much more pop than any AI race & always though that it was a good thing. Looking at the above though, I get much fewer points for my pop as I have a higher % of the Galactic total. Looks like my next game will be played with different racial picks ...
Minors are great sources of income. The biggest problem can be keeping them alive as the AI loves to extort & conquer them. In a couple of games I've had to build max strength defensive Starbases in their sector & gift them along with multi Rangers to keep them alive: something that was very important as I had 5+ trade routes to them!
It's not too hard to stay out of wars, you just need a strong military as a deterrent. One of my favourate tactics is to trade for the AI's ships - it weakens him & strengthens me at the same time. As for allies, well you don't need them if you are strong enough, they will just drag you into their petty wars. My last 2 victories have been Alliance victories but I don't enter into the alliance until I've got everyone at Close & ready to go.
To answer Khan ThoR, yes I've seen the AI colonise PQ 14 worlds at Crippling in 1.05. Did it twice in my last game.
Not true - capitals will flip. I've had both Major & Minor race capitals convert in games on the higher difficulty levels.
The AI certainly can use Starbases effectively. In one of my last games at Crippling there was an Influence resource in one of my sectors which the Arceans beat me to. They built that Starbase up to the max - all Mil improvements & mining stuff - the column of 12+ Constructors streaming through my sectors was surprising to see .... Admittedly they did then sell it to me for a very good price ....
All of the starting picks affect the whole race. How about a few that don't but do enhance your setup? New starting picks: Make Sol size 20, 26 or greater. Start with an additional Explorer Start with an additional Colony ship Start with a random Resource in the Sol sector.
In 1.03 I'd buy every TG & sell most to everyone for a lot of cash. In 1.04 I've bought all but 2 but hardly traded any of them away (but did license those 2 off the AI for peanuts). That means I've got a lot of big bonus' that the AI doesn't and I seem to be doing very well because of that. The start of my 1.04 game seemed a little slower because I was very careful with my spending as I'd heard that the AI didn't like to give out a lot of cash for TGs etc. I made sure that I was making
I'm currently playing my first 1.04 game at Crippling difficulty in a Gigantic galaxy and the money seems to be pouring in. Fine, the AI doesn't value TG's any more and won't pay a reasonable amount for them but they will pay a fortune for Tech. They won't part with Military tech themselves for anything but that means that they will pay whatever you want to aquire it from you. I managed to swap much of the AI's Navy for early Military Tech such as Intestellar Tactics & Large Scale Buliding & hav
