Iraqi Shiites protest against Al Jazeera

Freedom of speech in Iraq, isn't it beautiful.

If thousands of Iraqis protect in Iraq supporting the Shiite leaders decision to keep Politics and Religion separate, and no MSM reporter reports it, does that mean it did not happen?

Read and decide for your self. Also this tidbit had to be reported in the Tehran Times, for us to hear it.

Iraqi Shiites protest against Al Jazeera


BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Thousands of Iraqis demonstrated against Al Jazeera on Wednesday after the Qatar-based television channel apparently broadcast comments from an Iraqi Sunni exile warning Shiite clerics to keep out of politics.

Fadel al-Rubaie, a contributor to Al Jazeera, made his comments on Tuesday night.

They were picked up by Iraqi satellite channel al-Furat, owned and operated by the country's most powerful Shiite political party, which organized a television phone-in about them on Wednesday.

Dozens of angry Iraqis called al-Furat, run by the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, to condemn Rubaie's comments. Leading Shiite politicians, gearing up for Thursday's election, leapt to the defence of their clerics.

Around 5,000 Shi'ites gathered in Sadr City in east Baghdad, held pictures aloft of revered Shiite clerics and chanted anti-Jazeera slogans. Some unfurled a banner reading "Al Jazeera -- channel of terrorists".

They demanded an apology from the broadcaster and urged the government to take action against it, even though Al Jazeera is already banned from broadcasting from Iraq.

There were smaller protests in the Shiite holy cities of Najaf and Kerbala as well as Hilla, Basra and Nassiriya, south of Baghdad, and in a town near Kirkuk in the north.

P.S. since my editing of this posting is not operating, I want to add this bit of info:

The Iraqi Shiite Cleric leadership decided that politics and religion is to be held separate. This is a Fattwa from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. Read more of him below:

Under the belief that politics and religion should not mix, he has been openly grateful that the United States toppled Saddam Hussein, and believes Iraq should be a democracy, provided there are direct elections, which would favor the Shiite majority. Link

Awesome awesome awesome. How beautiful that al-Jazeera, the mouthpiece of radicalism, is being swept away by democracy and free speech...

Did I say "awesome"? 'Cause that is how I feel. Bring on the elections.
