ELECTION IN AFGHANISTAN SHOWS FATAL FLAW IN BUSH POLICY

The highly publicized election in Afghanistan yesterday has documented the fatal flaw in the foreign policy George W. Bush is pursuing which is, the Spreading Democracy Theory. This is the holy Grail of foreign-policy which is supposed to make America safer and for which we are willing to sacrifice our young men and women.

The problem with this idea is that in many areas of Afghanistan, the voters DID NOT KNOW any candidates running for office. At the polling places, voters talked among themselves as to who each was going to vote for since no one knew any of the candidates. They did not know what they stood for and might as well have closed their eyes and voted. The reason for this is the candidates were afraid to campaign or make themselves known for fear of assassination. This is the very same thing that has taken place in many locations in Iraq. Many candidates in the highly touted Iraqi election were not known until the voters saw their names on the ballot FOR THE FIRST TIME when they voted! George Bush does not realize that the Muslim populations in these countries are simply not ready for democracy. Until there is security, that will allow candidates to make themselves and what they stand for known to the voters, there can be NO REAL DEMOCRACY! We are not even close to that in either Iraq or Afghanistan!

The Bush Tax cuts were justified because we, according to Bush, had a projected Surplus that indicated the tax payers were OVERTAXED. Since the Surplus NEVER existed, why should the tax cut be continued?

The issue of why the tax cuts for the wealthy is pictuted as aginst the wealthy. That is not the case. The following are the reasons for eliminating the tax cuts for the upper income tax payers:

In general, the money from the tax cuts to Middle income Tax Payers will be spent and thus help maintain the economy. A far smaller portion of the money from a tax cut to the wealthy will be spent. The wealthy save a much greater portion and even if they invest some of the added money, the consumer MUST have the added income to purchase the goods or services produced by the new investment. The economic reality is that tax cuts to the middle income workers are far more effective to help the economy then tax cuts to the wealthy.

The impact of giving up the tax cuts on the person is also very differen depending on their income. Giving up the tax cuts for the middle income workers that live pay check to pay check will cause a hardship to those workers and their family as well as adversly impact the economy because of reduced spending. Eliminating tax cuts on the wealthy does NOT adversly impact their life or that of their families. It cuts their SURPLUS.

The tax cut that eliminated the marriage penality was more of a correction of a error than a tax cut and should be maintained. Anothr error is the Minimum tax that because the point where that is a factor has not been indexed is hitting people the tax was NEVER intended to impact. The increased Child Care Credit and the 10% bracket are cuts to help the middle income family.

Thus, there are sound reasons why only the tax cuts to the upper income tax payers is better for the VAST MAJORITY of Americans.
