Known issues

While we appreciate all feedback, please remember that we offer no official support for beta \ preview \ developer channel versions of Windows. If you report issues while in any of those early release channels, you should not expect them to be addressed unless it still exists in a retail version of Windows.

Start11 2.0.7.1
Windows 11 Build 22631.3235
(new install, not a VM)

1. There's still the issue where the Start button isn't fully covered by the Start11 button, so there's a 1 pixel wide vertical area on the right side of the Start button where you can click on the underlying Windows 11 Start Menu. You can see where my orange mouse cursor is placed:

This happens with: Taskbar auto-hide enabled or disabled, any Start11 style, any Windows 11 scaling setting (i'm using 175% here), Enhanced Taskbar enabled or disabled. But i couldn't get it to happen when scaling was disabled.

Windows 10 isn't affected by this issue (latest 22H2 ISO from Microsoft). It only happens with 11.

2. Then there's this:

Here's i'm clicking on a PotPlayer window that's out of view (this is cropped) and then quickly moving the mouse to the Start button and repeatedly clicking in the bottom left area of the Start button.

It makes both Start11 and the Windows 11 Start appear. I'm NOT clicking on the 1 pixel area that the Start11 Start button isn't covering. This issue doesn't happen all the time though, maybe 1 in 9 times, so you'll have to keep going back and forth between clicking on a window and the Start button to reproduce it, and it doesn't need to be PotPlayer. It will happen with pretty much any window, like File Explorer. Btw i'm using the Windows Taskbar auto-hide (not Start11's, it's too buggy) and 175% scaling.

3. Can you add an option to move the bar at the top of the 'Windows App style' to the left side'? So instead of it being at the top like this:

It would now look like this:

So the button placement is like Windows 10, which is wayyyy more functional. They're right next to the Start button so there's barely any mouse travel needed (and it looks better). At the moment i pin the Settings app because of the the inconvenience of the Settings button being in the top right corner of the Start11 menu.

The All Apps list was also made thinner because it doesn't need to be so wide. It would be great if we could control the width.

4. With auto-hide + 'Reserve 1 pixel at the edge of the screen' there's a small 1 pixel gap underneath any maximised window, where you can see the desktop wallpaper behind it. The default Windows auto-hide setting will instead place a slightly transparent 1 pixel grey bar in this area. Can you do the same? Apart from just looking bad it's also little worrying having that gap constantly there when using an OLED monitor/TV with a bright colourful wallpaper. It could potentially cause burn-in.

5. Don't know how to reproduce this... But with 'Windows App style' one or two items in the All Apps list sometimes become highlighted, as if the cursor is over them. Closing the Start11 menu and re-opening it will not fix it., but placing the cursor over the highlighted item and then moving the cursor to the right side will make it disappear. Nothing else will get rid of it. I'll update this post if i find a way to reliably reproduce it...

I've updated my previous post and did some more testing. So the first two issues mentioned above do not appear on Windows 10 22H2 (latest ISO from Microsoft), they only happen on Win 11.

There's several more issues i've found and i'll post them at some point, i'm just too busy for the next few days.

One quick one though: If i remember currently, typing "UAC" used to find User Account Control, but this isn't working in Start11.

OK, this is annoying as... well, you get the idea. Inside the Start11 configuration window, there are a lot of options that have multiple options to choose from like fonts and such. An example of this is...

OK, when you're scrolling with your mouse scroll wheel, it's far too easy to modify what these settings are while scrolling. This is annoying. Changes to these kinds of settings should only be possible if the setting is activated.

Does this make any sense?

Hello there,

Windows 11 Pro 23H2 build 22631.3296 here, Start11 latest beta.

When using enhanced Taskbar this way:

The Taskbar does not show the correct icon for application (Acronis TrueImange in this screenshot, but it acts the same even with other softwarres):

Don't know if it's a bug or I'm missing some other option.

Thanks!

Does this happen with all applications?  I should point out that the window icon may differ from the application icon so there may be a difference.

That said it should not be a folder icon I would have thought.

1. I've broken the Start11 button for the 3rd time...

This is an odd one... To reproduce it: Run the latest version of VMware Workstation 17 Player (it's free) and start up a Windows VM. You probably don't need to install Windows and get to the Desktop as shown above, just boot to the Windows setup process. Now either click on the running VM in the Taskbar or the VM window, then repeatedly click on the Start11 button. Both the Start11 menu and the Windows 11 menu will open, with the second click always opening the Windows 11 Start menu. Unlike with the similar issue that i posted a few posts above, this issue is reproducible 100% of the time.

2. Can't reproduce this one in a VM but it happens on my hardware: Enable Enhanced Taskbar and quickly keep clicking the right mouse button on an empty area of the Taskbar while moving the cursor left or right along the Taskbar. It causes massive lag. Depending on how many times the Taskbar has been clicked on it can take up to a minute before each context menu appears. But with a VM there's only occasionally a little lag, around 1 second at most. I'm using an RTX 3080 with the latest drivers and an AMD Threadripper 3960X.

3. Create two or more tabs and then enable transparency on the first tab, a tiny group of pixels will now appear where the arrow is pointing below. It's easiest to see them with transparency set to around 66%.

4. Typing "gpedit" does not find Group Policy Editor.

5. Not a bug but i want to use Nilesoft Shell for the right click context menu on the Start11 button because it allows for full customisation of the menu items. Start11 replaces the NS menu on the Taskbar/Start. So would it be possible to get software like this working with Start11? Or how about adding a similar feature to Start11?

Use this Registry edit provided by Stardock for just this purpose:

Added string registry key to use Win32 menus on right-click on the taskbar to allow third-party extension of the menu. Use HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8    S11_UseOldRightClickMenus and set value to 1

Yeah. and it's annoying as hell.

I am pleased to say this gave me an idea on how to resolve this and there turned out to be a simple tweak we could do to override this irritating default Windows behaviour.

So this should be sorted in the next update.

Thank you once again. That partially works... This got Nilesoft Shell working on the Taskbar when the Enhanced Taskbar is enabled, but it doesn't work when right clicking the Start button. Although if i disable the Start11 setting 'Show Win+X menu when right clicking on the Start button' then it will now show a NS right click menu on Start, but it only has like 5 items and wont disappear unless i click on the Taskbar. The lack of items is probably because the Windows Win+X menu has been disabled (because this isn't a Start11 menu). So S11_UseOldRightClickMenus needs to work when the Win+X menu is still enabled, which it isn't doing.

Awesome!  I also encountered the "mouse wheel setting change" several times but forced myself to be more careful.  I'm glad to hear there may be a programmatic fix!

It not showing when right clicking on the start button would be an issue that's not ours.

The win x menu is also non standard and may not be something they can alter.

We cannot offer any support for that app so issues with that would need to go to those devs.

Yeah you're right, after a ton of testing i've found that Nilesoft Shell actually no longer works correctly with recent Win11 builds. I've contacted the dev to let him know. It's definitely not anything to do with Start11.

I thought it was a general problem, but some application manage to show the right icon, while some other don't:

In this image you can see (starting from left to right): Edge, HWiNFO64, CoreCycler, WinRAR, Notepad and ACDSee.

Hi,

I have Start 11 version 2.07 installed.

But Object Desktop Manager keeps telling me to update Start 11.

On hovering my mouse pointer over the update button, it says Update V2.06 to V2.07.

But I already have V2.07 installed.

This is not the first time this has happened with Object Desktop Manager.

Last year  I had the same problem with it continually telling  me to update Fences.

1. Folders cannot be unpinned from the Start11 All Apps menu. To reproduce this:

Right click on a folder > Pin to Start > now right click again and unpin it > the folder is still on the Start11 All Apps menu.

Restarting Explorer doesn't fix it. Deleting the folder doesn't remove it either. You need to first delete the folder, then go to the All Apps list and click on the folder there, then Windows will say that it cannot find the folder shortcut and ask to delete it, so click on 'Delete it' and then finally restart Explorer and it will be gone.

2. When enabling 'Pin Windows menu shortcut on Start11 menu' it will replace a random pinned app. It does not simply pin the Windows menu shortcut, it replaces an existing pinned app at random. In my case it keeps replacing Adobe Premiere Pro.

3. When pinning an app/.exe or shortcut to Start11, it randomly places it in any existing tab, including ones that are not open. So you then have to go hunting through all the tabs to see which one it's decided to put it in this time. It should always be put in the same tab, like the first tab at the top, and on the left side, which would probably be the most visible/immediately obvious and wouldn't need any scrolling. If the first tab isn't open, then it should automatically be opened when something is pinned.
