Start11 1.36 Changelog

Start11 1.36 is a culmination of many prior betas.

1.36

  • Fixed an issue with OS MinWidth entry for taskbar having bad data causing very small taskbar buttons

1.35 (beta only)

  • Fixed a crash possibility for Windows 10 style when dragging an icon from the left to the right if no groups to place it in existed.
Credit: Naxterra for the heads up: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1811010/discussions/0/3598968030053576538/

  • Further WB compatibility tweaks:

    • Fix when the skin not working correctly with the Win10/Win11 styles when not offset from the taskbar.

    • Fixes issues with WB skins with animated start menus

    • Fixes an off-by-1 clipping issue on custom images for shortcuts when in Win10 style

    • Fixes two-row taskbar with WB not being right on Win11

1.34 (beta only)

1.33 (beta only)

  • Updated version to 1.33

  • Compatibility fixes for WindowBlinds 11

1.32 (beta only)

  • Addressed remaining conditions where taskbar thumbnail images could be misaligned.

  • Resolved an issue with the taskbar not being able to be resized on 22H2 sometimes

  • Resolved an issue with small taskbar and the system tray icons being cut to one row vs two on 22H2 when using enhanced taskbar with a one-row taskbar

  • Optimized Start11 startup

  • Resolved an issue with the system tray icons on 22H2 in rare circumstances not repainting the background under them / under the network+sound icons

  • Resolved an issue with dragging taskbar buttons where if you left the taskbar area then it would jump between insertion points and not allow any drag to be successful

  • Fixes https://forums.stardock.com/515349  and a resource leak found when using with WB11

  • Tweaked engage Cortana mode to resolve a potential issue with it not always engaging if you opened Cortana just before the start menu

  • Changed Win11 menu so if you disable Start11 search the search field will disappear by default but will respect the option to show/hide the field too

  • Tweak for Search mode in Win7 skins to be light mode

  • Change to Start11 running to hopefully workaround some PowerShell issues on shutdown for some users in edge cases.
This change will potentially impact support for third-party apps which can launch Start11 such as DisplayFusion. It should detect this correctly but if not adding a registry key of type string with value "1" called AllowThirdPartyTaskbars to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8 should revert to the old system.

  • Fixed issue with recolored start menu textures using OS accent color not refreshing on color change

  • Icon overflow (hidden icons) with new Win11 taskbar (insider dev/beta) now shows correctly when the taskbar is at the top of the screen.

  • Added support for setting the taskbar button size (unless there is insufficient room) when allowing Start11 to enhance the taskbar via the OS regkey MinWidth stored at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics Unlike on Win10, this will scale for dpi correctly allowing consistency over multiple monitors with different scale factors.

  • Tweaked sign-out / shutdown menus when in Dark taskbar mode to use a dark menu rather than light.

  • Tweak to resolve an issue with the line on the taskbar in 22H2 being too transparent when in dark mode

  • Tweaked default taskbar transparency on Win11 22H2 when in dark mode as slightly too solid by default

  • Resolved crash changing custom icon for a tile in Win10 menu (or custom image on Win11 menu) if you move the mouse over the menu whilst picking

  • Fixed an issue with excessive titlebar caption changes in apps triggering excessive refreshes of the taskbar causing a lag issue on the taskbar with enhanced taskbar enabled.

  • Resolved crash issue when searching for more than 31 chars in a single word

  • Dragging two or more items into a Win11 group in the menu no longer causes a resort to put the newest one to the far left

  • Resolved issue with progress bars on combined taskbar buttons not always showing correctly

  • Resolved issue with some pinned shortcuts (imported from the OS menu) not showing the jump lists on right-click in Win10/11 menu mode

  • Resolved issue with being unable to pin steam apps to win7/modern menu from search

  • Taskbar search mini preview should reposition itself correctly after a brief pause on the initial show when using centered taskbar mode on 22H2

  • WB skins should now support blur on the background of the startmenu (Win7/modern). May require WB 11 beta 2

  • Win10/11 style all programs list now respects icon set for folders vs using a default icon

  • Taskbar thumbnail popup window will no longer go partially offscreen with a very large number of windows owned by a single app when using enhanced taskbar on Windows 11

  • Tweak to thumbnail popup window positioning when in center mode with enhanced taskbar

  • Resolved issue with not being able to right-click on the first 50 pixels of the taskbar when in center mode with enhanced taskbar in Win11

  • Fixed issue with double animation with WFX start menu animations enabled (To use you MUST disable the Start11 animation in Start11 first)

Known issues

While we appreciate all feedback, please remember that we offer no official support for beta \ preview \ developer channel versions of Windows. If you report issues while in any of those early release channels, you should not expect them to be addressed unless it still exists in a retail version of Windows.

Something different here, duplicates of the right side notification area icons. They do not work, left-clicking on them brings up the same window as the speaker icon. Don't know when it started. Won't go away. Win11, 22621.900

Sorry I've been gone for a bit y'all been dealing with some stuff IRL and had lot's of work.

Here's a bug I noticed a couple builds back but still remains in 1.36. When highlighting a tile and then moving off the menu on the left side highlighting is not canceled. It works fine bouncing between tiles/groups and to the right edge. I suspect the small strip on the left with various icons is not reporting properly?  Any how see the video below

The notification area icon remains when 'Do Not Disturb' is displayed.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Do you have Windowblinds installed? If you do and you're using a WB skin, can you post its name.

Thanks

Windows 11 Pro Version 22H2 (OS Build 2261.900)

This graphical textual error has been present in the last number of Start11 versions. See this pix.

https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArpXySjqs7lJj-B70KP5EqzcRuinQw?e=syPzF1

This is the "About" page of my Start11 program. Observe the visual degradation of the three buttons' text on the right. The degradation is even worse on my actual monitor screen (4k 3840x2160 w/HDR and Scale set to 150% as recommended).

Oddly, if I take a screenshot the button text appears normal, like the text on the left, in the screenshot.

There are numerous buttons throughout the Start11 prefs that show this text degradation.

Cheers.

Do you have HDR mode enabled on your monitor?

Yes, I mentioned that in my comments. If that is a problem then why doesn't it affect other text in the program?

The taskbar does not go to top of display with Start11 1.36.  Not sure if it is a Start11 problem or a W11 problem - About quarter inch space from top of display (surface laptop)

This problem is happening on Insider Build 25262 - Understand you don't have obligation to debug Insider Builds but would be good to know if W11 problem to notify Microsoft

This app is a breath of fresh air. Loving it.

OS:
22621.819
Conf:
Full-screen, W11 start menu with S11 search enabled

Issues I've noticed in the last two months:

1: Noticeable lag (3-ish seconds) after right-clicking anything in "Start Menu", same in "All apps" tab.
Reproducing — right-click an icon in "Start Menu",  then immediately try to interact with any other icon, menu freezes.
Seems like the lag is prolonged when you close the context menu.

2: Running an app via "Tasks" as Administrator gives basic privileges.

Both of the issues was introduced before 1.36.

The only other thing I could mention, which isn't a bug — is setting "Tray icons" to "Always show".
There was a way to fiddle with the registry before, but it doesn't work anymore. T_T

I'm having two issues, although I can't say if they're from this build or if they were present before.  I think at least one has been persisting for a few weeks.

Windows 11 Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.819)

  1. The Start11 taskbar fails to disappear when switching to a fullscreen or borderless windowed application.  I am having this issue persistently with my remote desktop connection for work as well as in games such as League of Legends of FFXIV.  It doesn't matter if I Alt+Tab or click on the program on the bar.  I can usually make it disappear by attempting to tab in and out multiple times although the issue has gotten persistently worse and sometimes it won't disappear at all.  This is more than a mild annoyance because when it happens, the native taskbar for my remote connection will not appear so I can't interact with any programs using it in that environment.
  2. Some periodic icon overlap in the clock icon notification area (the correct name for which I am blanking on right now.)  Of course it's not happening while I write this or before I decided to do so.  I will update this post with a screenshot if I notice it again prior to a response.

Thank you!  This product is otherwise wonderful and until now I'd had very minimal issues, but the taskbar display issue in particular is a huge nuisance for me.

I also suddenly have problems with Start11 (for WIndows 11-64.) Symptoms:

(1) task bar on second monitor "migrates" on its own to first monitor; the two overlap; both no longer respond to clicks. If I restart Explorer, problem clears temporarily and returns; (2) Task bar on primary not at top of screen; it's down 1/4 - 1/2"

Both of these without Start11 enhanced task bar running; if  I flip it on, then task bar moves up into the space at top of screen and becomes unusable at all.

I have uninstalled (including removing all settings) and reinstalled a couple times.

I should add I AM on 22623.1028 preview edition of WIndows 11; maybe this is a "live with it" kind of condition; I just want to know if others have had this issue and found a way around it.

I am afraid your use of the insider build is the cause of this problem.  Builds 22623 onwards have a new taskbar.

If you set the taskbar to the bottom and disable the enhanced taskbar it may work better for you for now.

We are investigating this as it seems to be caused by recent MS tweaks to the new taskbar itself.  Unfortunately one of the risks of using very pre release code.

When I updated Start11 today to the latest build I'm noticing the start menu no longer displays 'Recommended' (recent) items in the 'Windows 11' style when previously it was working fine.  I've checked your knowledge base and confirmed based on the following article the windows privacy is properly enabled --> The Start Menu is empty - Documentation - Stardock Help Center

The interesting thing is that if I change the Start Menu to the 'Modern Style' and from that start menu, select the 'Windows Menu' option, it displays 'Recommended' (recent) items but not in the 'Windows 11' style or any other start menu style.  Please help.

'Modern Style' displays recommended (recent) items:

'Windows 11' style does not display anything

Thanks for writing back. I get it. I'll let things sit for a while, though I do miss all the Start11 goodness.

When will we get ObjectDesktop app to finally show the right values after update? That is really annoying. Updated both S11 and WB11 just to be shown the update button again. This has been going on for years.

Start11 v1.36

WindowBlinds 11.00 (011 - Windows 10 Edition)

Start11 Settings: Start Menu: Windows 10 style

Issue:

Partial theming of the Start Menu.

Start11 should prevent WindowBlinds from theming any of the Start Menu styles except for menu styles supported by the WindowBlinds theme or there should be a setting in Start11 to toggle theming of the Start Menu by WindowBlinds.

I mentioned this in a previous beta thread, but I am still having this issue:

I mentioned this on the Stardock Discord, but when I try to click and drag items, they frequently end up far from where my cursor is (usually a fair bit to the left of where my cursor is).  This has been an issue for a while now, but continues to be in v1.27 v1.36.

Currently Windows 11 Version 22H2 (OS Build 22623.1028), but it is not new with this version.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Set taskbar to never combine icons (I am not sure whether it happens with other taskbar modes).
2. Attempt to drag and drop taskbar itoms.
