What do I play while I wait? Good to scratch an itch and help me come up with ideas?

What do I play while I wait? Good to scratch an itch and help me come up with ideas?

I actually own a ton of space games on steam I've never gotten to. I know nothing will truly scratch my star control itch until this is out, but maybe some can acccomplish parts!

What games are good for space combat?

What games are good for exploration?

What have unique alien creatures and exciting plots?

What are you going to play to scratch your sci fi itch while you wait?

Now now boys.... (right? boys? right? May I should just use the girls as a general word instead???).

Let's stop the bickering and getting sidetracked and focus on the OPs request.

Well clearly I'm a Kohr-Ah.

My apologies Kohr-Ah boy... err girl.... thing.... err Kor-ah....

Umm... I wonder maybe Kohr-Ah are guys and Kzer-za are gals? Or vice versa?

This is way off topic, but I'm fairly certain that both genders exist in both sub-species. I mean...that would be REALLY weird otherwise. Though I always preferred to use the female Khor-Ah voice pack for UQM, so I dunno.

...what are you going on about? The Blaster Launcher is in both the reboot and XCOM 2 o_O . You have to get fairly far to unlock it, and it's much more powerful than it was before.

In the original game, the blaster launcher mechanic was set up so that you could give it waypoints. This made it a very unique weapon because you could use the waypoint mechanic to send it through windows or to strike a central roof tile of a UFO. Shoot it up in the air, move to the position, then make it drop straight down (or do loops). The point of it was that YOU control the path of the projectile, not the AI. It was fun. That's one of the reasons that makes the original Gallop XCOM better than anything that's come after it.

Soo...the difference was purely aesthetic. Because the point of the blaster launcher, from a mechanical standpoint (as a systems designer) is very clearly GOOD GOD SUPER RANGE FROM HELL.

The Firaxis' Blaster Launcher was a long-range grenade, but the original Blaster Launcher was so much more. The original game already had essentially unlimited range on all the weapons - projectiles wouldn't stop (or explode) unless they hit something. The blaster launcher, let you do more than what you'd expect to get from a homing missile.

This is what I mean...

(Warning... The video is very choppy. They must have slowed down the DOSBOX clock.)

Was it game breaking? Yes... But to get to the point where you could use them, you had to survive the AI using it against you.

If you haven't played the original Gallop XCOM, I highly recommend it.

I have actually. I never beat it, but I enjoyed every minute, including getting my face smashed in :P  My most profound moment was when I was finally able to decipher what some of those hieroglyphic icons meant XD When I was younger it wasn't much of an issue for me, but now that things like tooltips and wikis are commonplace, (also the concept of clean, readable UI design ;P) you go back and scratch your head a bit if it's been a while.

Anyone played this?

Just put about 100hrs into SWTOR. Got that out of my system for a few weeks.

I just bought Ashes of the Singularity after a couple of weeks in Japan (and immersing myself whole-heartedly in Gundam mania, amongst other anime).   Blown away, Stardock, blown away.

I think I can wait a few more months (jk) now for SCR while I play through Ashes, so take your time SD.  If your polish on SCR is anything like it was on Ashes, then I will happily wait patiently.

After all this I ended up getting heavy into Magic The Gathering again and wasting a lot of time on that.

Just grabbed  Battlestation: Harbinger on steam on sale - anyone try that?

I do want to try Grim Dawn, but my spouse and I play through all the diablo-likes and their computer has been out of commission lately :(

I recently got Battlestation Harbinger too but didn't have much time to play past the tutorial. Seems pretty fun but it definitely isn't an action game; the combat is basically a RTS. And a very slow one at that, even when you set it to double speed. I hope that maybe with some progression it might get a little faster and/or more complex.

Playing new Hearthstone expansion now.

^ This is actually the real reason why I haven't played Battlestation Harbinger that much yet.

Also, lol, I just used a 7 day pass in WoW to go back and level a panda to 20 to get the Paladin Hero in Hearthstone. It ended up leaving me with an unscratched itch (god the combat feels stale now) so I ended up starting to play Elder Scrolls Online too. I'm still in the starting area, but I'm not sure if anyone else is playing it (if you are, don't burst my bubble I'm still excited! I'm sure it's crap at endgame or sooooomething, but don't tell me lol)

Haven't been playing many games, but I've been spending a lot of time on programming my keyboards...

These all run QMK.

My daily driver that I'm using right now has a small speaker / piezo. I wish I had sheet music for the SC1/2 victory ditties. If I did, I'd have it play one when I plugged it in.

Nice, a fellow input aficianado! Although I'm probably way more casual of a mechanical keyboard enthusiast than you. You are clearly hardcore compared to me. I'm fascinated by how people in the community are always macguyvering old and new stuff into new layouts these days, but haven't gotten into doing it myself.

I have a Das Pro Ultimate Cherry Brown at work and a Corsair K70 Cherry Silent at home, but I never really adjusted to the new silent keys. I think they're too sensitive; you can barely even rest your thumb on the spacebar without it registering and I frequently get repeat keystroke inputs. I want to try the new Cherry speed switches but still might switch back to brown in the end.

I would love to get more into that stuff. Have you by chance tried out any of the new switches like the Das Alpha Zulu or Razer green/orange?

I prefer clickies, but they are too loud to have at home. I tried reds and had the same problem you are having. I endet up with a K95 with browns and dampener o-rings.

Then I switched over to the boards that I built myself.

I miss Microsoft Sidewinder gamepads... best gamepad I ever used.  For some reason Microsoft stopped supporting them after Windows 98, I still have like 6 of them in my closet, haha.
