well we're still in alpha of course it's awful =D
new things always take time till perfection is reached.
so currently theres the problem the the current UI layout is just not cut out to support the size of the meta units.
from testing it appears that the maximum size of one meta unit is 1xT3 + 16xT2 + 80xT1.
that is a respectable size =D it really is. and of course it causes problems with the current UI.My idea to adress that issue is with numbers:
currently the UIs spacing suggest 1 large square and 4 smaller squares next to it. as the game is right now this would fit perfectly if
each smaller square stands then represents one certain type of t2 unit. within that quare two numbers indicate the amount of t2 units of that kind in the meta unit and also the number of t1 units under those t2 units. thise gives a brief but much better idea of the size and how the meta unit is structured currently.
I will draw a sketch of what i mean tomorrow... it's 7:30 and i havent slept yet and written all night
you'll have to excuse my lazyness.
But what we really need is a whole new panel / menu, for meta unit construction. Think of earth 2150. in the tech and unit tab you could chose a body weapon parts mean sof transportation etc and then add that unit to the list of buildable units.
In this case we choose the t3, t2 and t1 units composition and then a build order is sent to the respective factories.templates could be created saved an dloaded for future games. It's a great feature and I think this is something that you should really try to implement.
So much for building the meta units. But what about managing them? I think the same menu shoudl contain a tab with a meta unit overview and all the other units you have. from there you should be able to drag and drop units around switching up your meta units as you please. this window could be further enhanced by being able to create our own hierarchy of the units. What would also be interesting in that respect:
the current meta unit holds a max of 1*10 + 16*4?+ 80*1 logistic points. how about having total freedom on how to spend those logistic points within that meta unit. But this will need a sophisticated AI, so I wouldn't expect this to be top priority.
I shall draw up something when i managed to get soem sleep for this too =D
But what i really am missing right now is the propper creation of meta units through the hot keys. adding t2 units to a T3 units through QWER works just fine but further adding t1 units to that meta unit through QWER is just broken.
instead of assigning the t1 units to the meta unit, they will just be spawned unassigned and sent to the rally point of the respective factory. Not good
i hope that is a bug, cause i think this worked propperly before. Another problem is that you can now order more units than actually fit into the meta unit ( duno if that is on purpose) but this makes managing your meta units a lot harder. I would love to see the old controls back but also the addition of more hot keys:
- Select t3 unit and then add units with QWER for T2 and ASDF for T1 but only send as much build orders as the meta unit can fit in that way!
- managing meta units is really hard right now and i dont like the whole select a bunch of units and press Z idea either :/ I have the need to be in full control.
