Will Stardock get the 1.9 gig update bug fixed?

Will Stardock get the 1.9 gig update bug fixed?

hey guys, are you working on a fix for the having to downgrade to the non-beta then back up to the current beta version to avoid a 1.9 gig update?

Also, I always try and post saved games, error logs, custom sov. files, crashes, screen shots etc but I feel like I'm being ignored when I post bugs, nothing is ever done about them.

As we're still looking in to things, can someone try to Reset the Impulse data.  Here is how you do it:

- Delete the UpdateSizes registry key for Elemental as described earlier in this thread

- Go in to Preferences

- On the General tab, click the 'Reset Data' button.

- Impulse will go through a simulated self update

- Let Impulse calculate the download size of the Elemental update.  If you click on the Updates tab in Impulse and are viewing the applications in the Details view, the Download Size column will say 'Calculating...' while this is happening.

- Report back with any results.

I followed all your instructions and restarted Impulse, but it still tries to download 1.9GB

OK same boat as everyone else. Can someone (Frogboy) make the 1.11 executable available so that we don't have to download 1.4GB?

Very excited to come back from my summer holidays to see the update there and very frustrated that I need to download 1.4GB to have it. I think impulse has really dropped the ball on this update issue they have had months to fix it. It is the very reason that I recently purchase Elvan Legacy through steam rather than stardock - steam works.

I'll chime in as well.

Went through the procedure as per the IamDean post above and it says

v1.11 available - 1.42 GB

Just FYI :

UpdateSizes key after doing above:

elemental$1.10.052$$1.11.053$$               1526158912|8959|1728341614|12139

Just gathering some more information to try to track down the issue...

Can someone who is having the 1.9GB update problem hold down the Shift key and right click on Elemental in Impulse and select 'Verify Installation'?  After some calculating, you should get a prompt that says "Elemental: War of Magic is installed correctly."

made no difference for me on my THREE large downloads, nore did the running the mlemental meny or running elemental itself or even the manual, I eventually downloaded over 15 HOURS the entire lot

Why can't we just download the patches ourselves and apply them?

A separate patch would be handy, at least until you guys fix the problem. I'd like that snappier AI in my game thanks! :D

I think I am going uninstall and then reinstall - hopefully that will work

Yikes... I use Impulse Win7-x64, and thankfully my file was only between 12 and 13 Mb (without doing anything special); very painless.

Either way, if Impulse is truly at fault here by creating so many problems for people, it sounds like Stardock seriously needs to consider looking elsewhere for their updating methods.

has anyone deleted elemental and reinstalled it to see it it solves the issue? im still stuck with a 2.25 gig download and impulse completely freezes when i try to download

reset, etc doesn't do anything for me. 1.99 gig

For those still having a problem.  We have created a new build of Impulse that you will need to download and copy in to place that will help us find out why it is forcing a large download on your systems.  If you don't mind helping us out, here is what we would like you to do:

1) Download the zipped up Impulse files here: http://sd.stardock.com/impulse/Impulse%20Files.zip

2) Copy these files in to place where Impulse is installed.  By default on Win 7 64-bit the install directory for Impulse is C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Impulse.  C:\Program Files\Stardock\Impulse on a 32 bit system.

3) Delete the elemental UpdateSizes value here HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\ComponentManager\UpdateSizes

4) Run Impulse and once you are able to start the download/install, start is up.  Once Impulse has started the download (ie. you see the download percentage going), you can immediately Pause or Cancel the install (you do not need to wait 100MB).

5) In the upper right hand corner you will see the ?.  Click on that and go to 'View error log'.

6) In this file, each error that Impulse runs in to is added by the date with the error at the bottom of the file being the newest.  Paste all of the errors for the date that you did this (we don't need to see the entries from other days).

Doing this will help us get closer to tracking down why Impulse is thinking it needs a 1.9GB update.  Again, as the is not happening on all systems, we only need those with this problem currently to try this.

Thanks again for your help.

DariasDruss,

Another build is available at the same link (http://sd.stardock.com/impulse/Impulse%20Files.zip), if you are able to try it and post your results.

puntarenas,

To revert back, you can go in to Preferences and click the button 'Reset Data' or the next time Impulse updates, you will be back on official builds.

DariasDruss,

It is odd that you aren't seeing any output in your error log about sizes (similar to how puntarenas has shown).  If you go to where you have Impulse installed (most likely here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Impulse) what is the Created date of the file Impulse.exe?

puntarenas,

I have sent you an email requesting more information.  If you can assist further, that would be great.

FYI, I use Vista 64 Home Edition and Elemental was a digital download. I've not had this problem with any previous patches (Have had the game since 1.05). Did have the fiddly issue with the betas, but that had the "verify install" work around. Home you're able to sort it out!

Thanks.

puntarenus or anyone willing to give it a try,

Could you try the following:

- Assuming you are still on Windows 7 x64, navigate to the folder C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Impulse\InstalledXML.  (we are looking for a file in InstalledXML, so if this folder is not here, find the folder on your system)

- Here you should see a file name elemental.xml.  Rename this file to elemental.xml_

- Delete the elemental UpdateSizes value here HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\ComponentManager\UpdateSizes

- Run Impulse and once you are able to start the download/install of the Elemental update, start it up.  Once Impulse has started the download (ie. you see the download percentage going), you can immediately Pause or Cancel the install.

- Post back with the size Impulse says for the update.

The date that the file impulse.exe was created on is 11/17/2010. I noticed too in my error report nothing about dload sizes. I have installed and deleted impulse numerous times due to bugs and such. Hope this info helps.

In my Stardock Folder which is in e:\Games\Stardock\Impulse there is no elemental.xml. I searched my comp for the file name and nothing is showing up. I looked under my Documents\MyGames\Elemental and nothing there either. Could that be a big part of the issue?

Well there is no InstalledXML folder. Will keep looking must have made a mistake somewhere.

DariasDruss,

The Impulse.exe that is in the zip file you should have downloaded here http://sd.stardock.com/impulse/Impulse%20Files.zip should have today's date (1/10/2011).  It sounds as though either Impulse updated after you copied in the files or possibly the files were not copied to the correct location for the test.

As for elemental.xml, it would be in a folder called InstalledXML.  This should be located here C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Impulse\InstalledXML on Win 7 64bit.  ProgramData is a hidden folder by default.  You would either need to type that location in to the address bar in explorer or show hidden folders and files in order to navigate there.

Ok found it after a long search.

After locating the file and doing numerous other things that weren't needed it now says the update required is now 8.64meg.

Thanks for the help and being patient with me.

After following IamDean post #120 above:

1.10 -> 1.11

The Download amount still says 1.42GB but when I start updating it now says 8.64MB and completes fine.

Tried to run game and it won't get past the Dragon loading screen.

Tried Verify Install.  Says game not installed correctly.  Try update.

It now starts up the original 1.42GB download again :(

I have noticed that elemental.xml has been regenerated, but the Registry Key under UpdateSizes has NOT been regenerated this time.

So now something is really broken :(

Edit: Please see my post #130 below.  Restarting windows allowed me to play the game as normal.
