Patch Time Frame

So were supposed to atleast get one patch in septmeber that fixes magic and character creation.

But I say screw that, cant you all fix the end game slow down first and get a patch out ASAP, would rather have bugs squashed then content balanced

You'll get it when you get it. We all want it, creating yet another thread about it is just unoriginal.

Way to pass time maybe.

If BETA is any hint we will get patches once a week, every thursday or so.

So 1.7 this week,

1.8 next week and so on.

I just want that elusive "oh wait, jesse just found something, he says he gets 10-20 more fps now when looking at a city" fix released NOW as a hotfix or mini-patch.
Then i dont mind if it takes another week before we see another patch, i just want that preformance fix.

Well, so long as you want it, then, by all means SD, do it! <_<

I don't think he is alone in this.  :annoyed:

Are most people having performance issues?  Everything runs smoothly for me until i get the "out of memory" error, which has been worked around by a player (though not truly corrected).

See, the thread is starting ^_^   .

Releasing a patch requires testing and readying a patch. It's better to put in a bunch of work and put out a patch that fixes several problems then release a patch every two days.

I don't know about most people, but unless I use a cloth map my frame rate is very low around cities with more than a couple buildings to the tune of sub10fps.

But I dunno, maybe a Q9550 C2D and an ATI 5850 isn't enough to run 3d games.

Or maybe I should have windows xp 32 bit, a 9 year old OS that limits me to 3.5gb of ram, instead of windows 7 64bit. I hear its the bee's knees for performance, stability and compatibility.

I'm a spoiled person who thinks that 60+fps should be standard for gaming. I absolutely admit that. I think a lot of people don't notice frame rate at all.

elemental wasn't finished and will never will be at least according to brad.. so i guess that means we will keep getting patches forever.

Yep but at the moment i'd like to know if a patch would be : at best isn 1 week , at best in 2 weeks etc... so at least i know approximatively when i can come back and try a new game.

Kryo was saying in IRC last night something about the next patch being in testing, I think. If all goes well, I'd expect it this week.

ok thx for the info.

The out of memory error should be the 1st thing addressed as it makes the software inoperable.

GalCiv 1 got a patch in 2009, around 6-7 years after the game came out.

That said, the realistic lifecycle of regular patching for a SD game is around 3 years, which is still quite excellentt.  You got an infrequent patch or so after that to boot.  (usually when Brad or someone works on another game, they find sommething to fix a problem in previous games, and that can get hotfixed)

It doesn't cost SD all that much to patch, unlike console game publishers.

Well, releasing "yet another small fix" to testers is different from releasing a real patch to the public.

If an unforseen side effect nukes everyone's savegames, so what. *shrug*

You need to be a bit more thorough with customers. =P

"Static" stuff like buildings sound like nothing much for a 3D game but the GalCivs have always been terrible at displaying large amounts of "custom" ships with lots of parts. And it's probably a safe bet that this game uses a similiar technique.

Here, too, all buildings are assembled from elements, just like the ships in GC.

What would help is when a modder would take the time to replace the vanilla models with super simple elements. No animations, no people standing around waving, no smoke comign from chimneys... more or less just "icons" instead of fully featured (and pretty!) 3D models that one can zoom in on reeeeeally far.

Effectively, that's what LODs are for and as far as I heard, these are in the game, they work, but they aren't triggered soon enough, so they just don't take effect. I would guess that this is one of the features of the next patch so FPS should do a nice jump upwards.

Although some might not like it, I set my Cloth Map Threshold to 86% or something like that, so before I can zoom out far enough to see multiple cities, it reverts to cloth map. Obviously this dosen't help if you like to have views other than top down or iso metric. If you start aiming the camera at a distance, then a performance hit is quite eminant. :)

I'm a huge performance 'wh*re' and I have to say the only type of game that dosen't bother me as much if I can't get 60FPS with is TBS games. Although, as long as a turn dosen't take me 2 minutes to run, I'll be fine with it.

It's not like you are missing kills because of the lag when you move your camera over a city. :)

That being said, It would be nice if we could get the 3D view performance up, as the artstyle is very apealing.

Cheers,

V.
