Army Competiion: Already Failing

Ok, as you know from my previous posts I was really looking forward to this as it was fun.  However, I see that its fatally flawed and will be difficult to win.

1) The number of submissions has to be overwhelming, so near impossible to QA

2) I have done as some other "top people" have done and hosted the videos and made links.  They got points, I didn't.  So, maybe that's not valid anymore...but they retained their points. (and they keep reposting the SAME videos to similar self-signed up depots that have no user base....so what's the point?  Oh! Its + 75 points...again, fail)

3) Things are slipping through that are plagerized, not unique, and not really pertaining. I again, was surfing through other people's submissions to see what else I could do...but decided to take appreication of fan art.  OMG +75 points for some of this.  Look at http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr136/kyogre12p/barad-dur12.jpg  Its not even Elemental related! The user didn't even take the time to hide the fact you can see the image is opened up from Lotr (lord of the rings)!

So, I must say...what I once thought was a marketing genious...is actually an epic let down of a contest.  Also, after reading aura's reply to "what is the point of the army" I fear that this is actually going to cause elitism, make a contest that people can't realistic compete in(especially those who come in late)...and give it "oh, its just another fanboi post who hasn't even played the beta or read the book yet..."

What is done, is done.  But well..at what cost?

This is similar to everyone going anti-ubi because of DRM. Quickly the "negative reviews" got overlooked as everyone understood that is why. So the "valid complaints" got missed in the mix.  Well, now its going to happen in the opposite effect.  Really, how many posts out there are of people who have SEEN the final product or read the book yet?  None of us...I will admit, I was one of them.

I have failed this game since I participated in this viral campaign before we knew its effect.   I am going to remove my posts, my forums, downloads, and links to hopefully stop the perception of "anything elemental" being just a vanilla fanboi post. This game needs attention when real things start coming out and not lost in a wave of senseless blogs, posts, links, traffic.

I also know this contest is a failed attempt and I have stopped working towards it as its objectivity.  So I will no longer participate as it will be futile to put so much effort to win only half the points I submit that were previously awarded to others.  My last quest will be a linke to this post...so that it gets recognized for its 10 points and linked so other can see.

I am happy with the entry into the gift card, and the about 80+ people I confirmed signed up and those additional entries it gave me...as well as at least to them.

You tried getting points for answering a question...except you were wrong (customization will be enabled more as the beta progresses and full-on modding will be tested at the end before release)

Actually in reality I tried to get points for participating on the forums, and posting more than a single line. But that said, I also accepted that if it was rejected, then there was a good reason. Though just a heads up Kryo, on my rejection page it only said, customization will be

And then it cuts off. So I didn't get the rest of it, or be able to find out why. When I clicked on the submission itself, I assumed it might lead me to a rejection page explaining it but it just goes back to the army page.

I also answered that question from what I had remembered, but as you pointed out I was wrong. And that's cool. I understand.

But I listed that one for him so he could see it's not just volume, or general participation, it's that you all are looking for something else subjectively, and to not let it get to him. Cause I figured there was a good reason in my case that it was rejected.

But thanks for dropping by and letting us know. This can only help the Questers as it is get better at what we do! So thanks again!

It does annoy me a bit that this guy gets about twenty points per picture for walking around with a piece of paper on it and putting it up against stuff. Sometimes he just holds it up.

In contrast, I got 75 points for a thread that got 2,000 views and about 150 replies on the B12G forums. I mean, the point of it is a viral marketing campaign, right?

EDIT: What he's doing is what I'd count as "gaming the system". The most reward for the least effort.

Then take a bunch of pictures of yourself holding up a piece of paper in front of stuff.

Later,

Yeah, everything I've been doing can be duplicated easily by other people (with one exception, that is, but anyone who owns or runs their own business can do that too). TOWDrac has done the same thing I have as well. And for each picture I've submitted, there's probably 3 more that I couldn't or wouldn't submit for whatever reason. I happen to be in a location that offers interesting things to take pictures with since I live right near a lot of tourist traps (Mount Rushmore, Wall Drug, and so on). However, other than the initial push--which I was the first one to do this--the ones that have gotten the most points were the sillier ones. I gotta admit, I like, the "BETTER THAN BACON! Elemental: WoM" picture too, but that's not a unique location or anything. Just a silly sign.

By contrast, I've barely submitted anything for forum activity and tweets. Drac, again, has gotten many points for tweets, 10 points a pop, for what? Ten seconds of work each? (Not disparaging ya, Drac, as I said to someone else above, if you can get it, get it :) ) If people are active on forums, they will get a comparable number of points per post with IMO a lot less effort. Of course, I generally don't have time right now to sit at a computer and do that. What I CAN do is budget an afternoon to go out and take pictures. If I'm lucky, I may be able to do this once every couple of weeks. Extremely lucky and I can do that every week, but sooner or later, I'm going to run out of interesting places to go. During my spare time, I'm drawing fan art, which takes a lot longer for a lot less points but it's something I can fit into my very tight schedule.

It doesn't matter to me what the point gain on the pictures is either. It could be the minimum of ten points, and I'd still do it anyway because it's been a lot of fun to go out and goof off with either my hubby or a friend of mine (which in the latest pictures, he graciously agreed to hold the signs so that's him you're seeing). Every time I've done this, I've had people ask me about the game, which I think is the point behind it all: get the word out. In this way, I'm doing word-of-mouth. Maybe it's not getting as many people interested as your forum thread, but everyone who has approached me has been interested in what I was doing, why, and then what this game is.

TL;DR--You can do the same thing too, and have fun doing it. :)

EDIT: If you REALLY want a lot of points with a ridiculously low amount of work, add Elemental to a bunch of wishlists and email alerts.

You started the thread prior to the contest, and there was already one on that forum previously. So while it's good to discuss the game out and about (obviously, since you did get points), most of the people there have probably already heard of it.

By contrast, someone out spending time, gas, etc is not only putting more into it, but (and more importantly) there are going to be people seeing them and asking what the heck they're doing--people who may not otherwise have heard of the game. There was actually one user who printed up full-color posters and posted them around his city, and he got a crapton of points for that.

Hey, don't give away our secrets!:P That's where most of my points have come from so far, and that's also why I've stalled in terms of getting more. But I have a plan to change that soon}:)

LOL. XD

There's a couple sites I have yet to hit up too--just haven't gotten around to it. But, I think between the top ten, we've hit nearly all the sites you CAN get a wishlist at... maybe.

We've still one Big Idea for a promo, and at least two more interesting sites to hit with the camera (after that, things start getting really far away, although it would be incredibly awesome to take Elemental pictures at a missile site), and one "other". As well as whatever fan art I can think up.

"Buy Elemental, or we'll turn your house into a fancy crater"?

This Saturday I'm going on vacation to a place that will give me lots and lots of opprotunities for real life pics, as well as some other things. I'm not going to say where, though, I don't want anyone getting to any of my ideas first:P . Then when I get back I'm going to start doing it around where I live.

You need to do the missile silo, for sure:thumbsup:

This is quite true, I've just did it myself (went from about 105 to 450), I do just find it silly how people can make a great deal of points, as you yourself said, "goofing about". You've probably got bigger balls than me, though, I certainly wouldn't go wandering about with a sign with a game name on it. >:

@Autarkhos: It can be a bit embarrassing, this is true, but fun at the same time.

SPAM is actually pretty tasty.
