Army Competiion: Already Failing

Ok, as you know from my previous posts I was really looking forward to this as it was fun.  However, I see that its fatally flawed and will be difficult to win.

1) The number of submissions has to be overwhelming, so near impossible to QA

2) I have done as some other "top people" have done and hosted the videos and made links.  They got points, I didn't.  So, maybe that's not valid anymore...but they retained their points. (and they keep reposting the SAME videos to similar self-signed up depots that have no user base....so what's the point?  Oh! Its + 75 points...again, fail)

3) Things are slipping through that are plagerized, not unique, and not really pertaining. I again, was surfing through other people's submissions to see what else I could do...but decided to take appreication of fan art.  OMG +75 points for some of this.  Look at http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr136/kyogre12p/barad-dur12.jpg  Its not even Elemental related! The user didn't even take the time to hide the fact you can see the image is opened up from Lotr (lord of the rings)!

So, I must say...what I once thought was a marketing genious...is actually an epic let down of a contest.  Also, after reading aura's reply to "what is the point of the army" I fear that this is actually going to cause elitism, make a contest that people can't realistic compete in(especially those who come in late)...and give it "oh, its just another fanboi post who hasn't even played the beta or read the book yet..."

What is done, is done.  But well..at what cost?

This is similar to everyone going anti-ubi because of DRM. Quickly the "negative reviews" got overlooked as everyone understood that is why. So the "valid complaints" got missed in the mix.  Well, now its going to happen in the opposite effect.  Really, how many posts out there are of people who have SEEN the final product or read the book yet?  None of us...I will admit, I was one of them.

I have failed this game since I participated in this viral campaign before we knew its effect.   I am going to remove my posts, my forums, downloads, and links to hopefully stop the perception of "anything elemental" being just a vanilla fanboi post. This game needs attention when real things start coming out and not lost in a wave of senseless blogs, posts, links, traffic.

I also know this contest is a failed attempt and I have stopped working towards it as its objectivity.  So I will no longer participate as it will be futile to put so much effort to win only half the points I submit that were previously awarded to others.  My last quest will be a linke to this post...so that it gets recognized for its 10 points and linked so other can see.

I am happy with the entry into the gift card, and the about 80+ people I confirmed signed up and those additional entries it gave me...as well as at least to them.

There was a word left out of my original reply there. The first sentence of the second paragraph should have said "Honestly, I'm Not concerned with "Winning". Just by me accidentally leaving out that one word it threw off the "meaning" of my whole post. Sorry about that...see, that's why they call it "dope"..lol. My bad.

I really don't want to "Win" the contest. I'd rather the winners be actual people who want the game but can't afford it. I already bought and paid for my copy, plus the upgrade to limited. I don't need another one just to sit around and collect dust. Give it to someone who "needs" it. I just don't like "looking like a Recruit" as it were..lol.

I thought that was odd. Saying you wanted to win, then talking about how you had already pre-ordered; that explains it, lol.

If you were to win, you could always give the extra copy away. If I win, I have a friend or two who might be interested in the game, or I might try to get a family member into it.

Ok, I posted earlier about how I didn't mind losing my Digg points, as long as everyone lost the points for the same Diggs.  Well it seems I'm the only one who has lost points.  I currently have only 2 Diggs with points left while everyone else I looked at in the top 5 has been credited for Digg submissions that were removed from my account.  Is this still in progress, or am I just being knocked down a notch for no reason?

still in progress

Ok, thanks kryo.  I just wanted to make sure.

It's obvious there are a few people who are gaming the system. OP is one, creating a billion threads I'm sure he submits. Kyogre some how has 1700 points.

This game will be won by who can spam and game the most. I gave up on the first day when these guys had 600+ points within hours.

Gee, thanks. Go through my quests, you'll see there's no spam. At the worst, there might be some Diggs that no longer qualify under the new rules, but I submitted them before they were in place, and as Kyro said, they are still in the process of removing them. If you're going to accuse me of cheating, at least take the time to do some research first rather than just assume it's impossible to get 1700 points and decide, "Oh, kyogre must be cheating."

You cheating, cheater cheat!  I am surprised you don't have any quests worth over 100 points though.  I kinda thought it was gonna be harder without some larger point items in there.  That being said, it's still a long time till August 24. =P

Yeah, I'm trying to work on that. If only I knew some one with a podcast:P . I think it just goes to show you that you don't need to do some amazing thing in order to get a large point total. But as you said, it's long way to August, and that could very well change between now and then (although I hope it doesn't:P )

Ok, so that's the second post of you complianing about your unimagination and lack of effort.  Guess we don't need to talk about that anymore.

But, like kyogre said...go through our quests, mon.  Anything we do, you can do.  And as I said, if you put a little effort in reading(oh..."e" word)...you'd see another post where I say MOST (90%+) of my posts I don't even submit as quests.

How about them apples?

(Wow, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today sense I'm usually so cordial.  But as much as I can take incompetent or stupid, I can't take both)

I'm gonna say, I think the poster your commenting on Zampolit, is frustrated. Now, that doesn't mean incompetent, or stupid per se. More a case that particular author not feeling like he could compete with folks who streaked so far out in front. If they did want to compete, as you said, they can review the top dogs and see what they did, and if they are inclined to do so, also try it out too. Participating in posts that support and are building awareness of the game is useful.

But that's just my observation.

Well, most of the contest makes sense ... but I don't quite understand how you get points for Diggs and Wishlists.

Someone care to enlighten me?

And, are wishlists just for the Data collectors or something? Because it doesn't really seem to be "advertisement." Also, how do people have 5 wishlists for the same game? Do they want 5 copies of the game? I don't understand.*

*possibly inflating Elemental sales possibility among DD businesses, so that DD businesses (amazon, etc) will be more likely to give Stardock a better deal?

I'm not trying to rag, but how is that advertising? (at least the Digg, if someone leaves a comment, I can understand)

The deal with wishlists is that (at least some of the larger) sites use the number of people who've added a game as a major factor in determining article placement, etc. The more people wishlist it, the more likely others will have a chance to see previews and such on that site.

I understand the point of the Army to get the news of Elemental out to new customers.  What purpose does posting in the Elementalgame.com forums do for marketing?  Apparently Diggs and Friendfeed posts to possible new customers aren't good enough, so how is posting to the game's own forum better?

People don't need to worry about the people jumping to the lead.  I maxed at #4 and keep dropping because of points being taken away.  I have no artistic skills, and I'm not creative with marketing ideas, so I won't be getting any big points.  I've probably reached the max points I'm going to get.  I'll just hope to get a random prize at this point.

Ya see, now that makes sense.  Now I don't feel so bad about adding it to wishlists willy nilly.

qft.

Also for some other comments:

Windisch: Digg articles count, however, to keep them focused we are just giving points for articles that are dugg that Island Dog has submitted and are fairly recent.  If you feel some of your rejected submissions fit this criteria let me know and I'll look over them again.  I don't know what friendfeed is but if its like Twitter then you can absolutely get points for it so long as there is a way to link to what you have posted.  For that matter you could post about it on your facebook page if you can get a public image of it for us to see.  You are correct, more eyes is what we are looking for, forum posts on this forums do not get you many points (if any).

For people being discouraged because of leaders having a lot of points: Keep in mind that a lot of up front points can be gained from an initial set of things you can only do once (there are just so many wishlists and email alerts you can add a game to).  I would say there is a large number of points anyone can get very easily by just doing wishlists/email alerts.  From there people differentiate themselves with more creative or time consuming efforts.

As a suggestion for podcast people, you don't have to actually get on a podcast to get points for it :)  I don't know if any of you guys are very into gaming podcasts but pretty much all of them generally have a letters section or some way for listeners to contribute to the discussion.  I would not want someone to just spam all of them with things about Elemental, however, if you are a fan of one you could email in asking them to talk about the game and if they mention who the email came from there is your points/proof.

How about getting points based by Percentage of your Stardock Membership #. with the smaller the # getting a better precentage.

hehehehe

I like this idea.  :)   Rewards us "oldies but goodies".

I don't want to encourage too much competition:P but it's true. And there is, you know, another 2+ months until the end of the competition.

Well that makes it a lot easier. Now to find a podcast!

That was pretty much the first thing I did.  We'll see if it gets read, but given that E3 is next week it might get lost in the shuffle.

Speaking of podcasts. Can I submit a podcast in which Elemental is feature that I... umm, produce and host? Since I start work again after finishing my exams later this month.

I would think so, that's originally what I thought we had  to do. Although unless you alreay have an established podcast, I would imagine you would get the minimum possible points, because the rules say it's based off of how popular the podcast is.

Mind sharing what podcast/s you asked? On one hand, I don't want to send a request to the same one, but on the other, more people requesting it probably increases the chances Elemental will be talked about.

If it's an already established regular podcast. If you make one just for the points that you otherwise wouldn't, it won't be worth too much since it won't have an audience of its own.

Alright, I'll pitch the idea and in 3-4 weeks when there's a big enough audience I'll plug Elemental in one of the episodes and submit.

I think it would be suffice to say that the podcast MUST have been in syndicate prior to the launch of the Army competition.  Otherwise, it will be flooded with nonsense.  This way its aligned with the "digg" clarifications as well.

All I gotta say is that we've (the hubby and I) have two things planned for this contest that will be AWESOME.

Also, quick question: I suck at drawing (though I plan on doing some fanart myself), so is it ok to commission art for the contest, like say, from a friend who isn't interested themselves but are willing to help me out?
