Elemental Player Input: Unit names and quotes

Elemental Player Input: Unit names and quotes

image

When players design a unit that are asked to give it a name and a quote.

However, we don’t want players to feel like they have to do this.  To that end, we want to create a system where the game will “recommend” a randomly picked name and a randomly picked quote.

We thought it might be fun to let the beta testers get their suggestions on this into the game.

To that end, what kinds of fun and interesting quotes would you like be randomly selected as the default quotes and what sorts of interesting and useful names would you like to see used as suggested unit names?

Yes, please have an automated system.

You could also load a list of user supplied unit names from a units.txt file and pop up a list of them for us to choose from that file.

Same could be done with the quotes. Those files should be part of any custom race, since it's part of the flavor.

I like most of the quotes given here.

Just a note on NAMES. I do not think that many players will be happy with random names, because most players will want to designate their troops not as single individuals, but as exemplifications of a type -- in other words, you are not naming an individual with a proprium, but trying to categorize. Most players will not want to have a unit called "Fighter", they might as well call him "Bob" -- they will want to have them called by something which reflects their functionality; I do not see how that is possible with your open system. A "Knight" is a designation for elite heavy cavalry, a descriptive signifier; it makes sense; "Fast Knight" or "Heavy Knight" or whatever would make further sense for further modifications on that unit. "Big Hunky Sword Dude" doesn't make sense, unless you reserve it for big strong sword-carrying units. But you would need to incorporate semantic concepts into your names based upon the qualities of the unit in question. I don't see that happening with your current resources. Since you do not have "classes" in unit building, I would actually not put much effort into a pool of random names for the above reasons.

I apologize if any of these have been posted before.

"Monsters? My grandma is scarier than that wee beastie!" (Remove 'wee' as preferred.)

"A quick mind can be as deadly as the quickest blade."

"They tell me that death is a horrible thing. Heh, he and I are old friends."

"At your service liege."

"Bloody magic and. . .there's a snake in my boot!"

"The soul of a warrior is measured not by the size of his blade, but by the size of his honor." (. . .Don't know about that one.)

"Honor. Stoicism. A good pint of ale."

"Satisfaction is an enemy beneath your heel and a mug of cider/ale/rum."

Not particularly good, but hey.

As for 'unit names'. Eh. If they aren't given one by the owner, just pick something based on one of three things.

- Training

- Place of creation

- Defense rating

I tried to come up with a few, but everything came out kinda evil sounding. What does this say about me?

"In service of the Sovereign, all means are justified."

"While the Sovereign gives life, we give death. Both are necessary for the survival of the empire."

"Death follows in our wake."

"Let all the enemies of the empire know our name, and tremble at its mention."

"Our weapons, our armor, and our very lives are on loan from the Sovereign. We will not forget this."

"We are not agents of death; the idea is entirely backwards. It is death who serves us."

"Let them come and break upon our shields. We shall not be moved but by the will of the Sovereign."

"We may die this day, but ours shall be a glorious death."

"Some merely offer their own lives in service of the empire, but we offer the lives of many others!"

I reminds me of magical item creation in MOM. If let way you designed a staff and you add bonus to magic still, it created a "staff of wizardry"

I suggest that the special ability or type of equipment the unit has could influence on the name and the flavor text of the units.

I just hope there will be a name and quote generator function that's easily moddable (eg a simple python function), it should be easy to generate lots of diverse/appropriate text that way.

Most people won't actually want to type a name or description every time they design a unit, or will just type something lame (like Billy The Soldier in your demo lol).

"What a shame..."

"I'm the captain of this ship!... WEHEE!"

"Burn like my power!"

"No fear! Never again!"

"Revenge, a dish best served cold."

"Get pills... against my orders!"

Can we have an option not to have quotes with our units?

Because I'm sure it will be fun at first, but after doing it for long enough it will come down to 'think up another quote for your 101st new unit design' or 'sigh as the random quote generator assigns illogical or redundant quotes'.

I just want the option to say 'No quote for this guy'.

CORRUPT LEGION

"As you wish, we shall do."

PLEBEIAN

"Let us at 'em, let us crush the beggars!"

DRAINED CHAMPION

"Our weakness must not foreshadow corruption."

AMIABLE CREW

"We fight our enemies then drink with friends."

"First we fight then we drink!"

CORRUPTED HOLYMEN

"Come brother, I will show you peace."

ADDLED HOLYMEN

"The screams! Quiet! The screams!"

It seems that are several groups of people (call me cpt. obvious!) - some people want serious, some want funny some wants fantasy, some descriptive names and quotations.

I think elemental should satisfy all - but how AND without another option in settings tab? I assume there will be some tiny little button near quote and name area, which when clicked, will choose different random name/quote. This button might have some kind of very simple logic - it would prefer list, which quotes has been accepted for most of the time. Thus it would mostly feed me with some retarded quotes, yet serious gamers would get boring serious quotes.

All what is needed is this very simple logic behind the button and quotes sorted to different lists. and game will after some time adjust itself to everyone taste.

Your powers of observation astound me. You truely are Sargent Insight. :P

But yes, having a interface button which generates serious/silly/explict/sexy/silly/random/binary quites would be fun.

For those first peasents yanked of the field to do something else.

"Last month you make me chop wood then plant a field only to top it off with building another man's house and what do i get for it..... a Big stick and a moldy cape and told to go over there and look around.

A few of my own:

"In life, I serve, so that in death I have no regrets."

"For honour."

"Their last day comes."

"Your will. My dying wish."

"Thine enemies shall become ash."

"In life, In death, I serve."

"Till last breath comes."

"Your command. Their fate." OR "Your command. My fate."

"Forever watchful."

Some additional serious-type quotes:

"Would that you could, but you can't?  Then I will."

"Soldiers, civilians... Neither war nor I make these distinctions."

"Our fear has been burned away in the fires of spiritual perfection."

"Might may make right, but Magic makes the Mighty crumble."

any quotes from the original dawn of war ... minus quotes having to do with advanced weaponry.

example:

"A challenge worthy of my skill"

-Imperial Guard techpriest

Any Light seems bright when it's the only one.

May (God, Sovereign, What-have-you,) have mercy on your soul.

Fear is a small, dark tunnel, that seems endless.  Many are made to traverse it's length.  Few make it.  And even those that do aren't left unscathed.

In War, I fight.  In Peace, I toil.  Only in Death, do I rest.

Death becomes you.

I fight so others won't have to.

See my power, and fear me.

I shall show you what it means to be afraid.

The Light is my Strength.

Nature is my ally.

From the bowels of the earth, I rise to conquer.  (Could make a good Golem quote.)

Water gives life.

Mother earth shall provide for us.

The wind whispers, and I hear her.

For as long as I stand, Evil shall not succeed.

By my(our) might, I(we) shall prevail!

Strength is all that matters.

Not the best, but I'm still trying to get warmed up.  I'll add more when I can think of some good ones.

Just went through this whole post again and a couple people had some good suggestions or points.

 onemastikon says

I believe that those are valid arguments.   There should be an option box or some mechanism to turn off name/quote options.  In the single player campaign mode the game should reflect the lore and/or history of the world of Elemental.

I'm assuming(yea, yea) that Elemental will have an extensive text/lore editor for playing or modding?

If your taking your quote from a book or historical figure, could other posters please sight the reference., ie If you don't make the quote up yourself can you write where you heard or saw the quote?
