Elemental Player Input: Unit names and quotes

Elemental Player Input: Unit names and quotes

image

When players design a unit that are asked to give it a name and a quote.

However, we don’t want players to feel like they have to do this.  To that end, we want to create a system where the game will “recommend” a randomly picked name and a randomly picked quote.

We thought it might be fun to let the beta testers get their suggestions on this into the game.

To that end, what kinds of fun and interesting quotes would you like be randomly selected as the default quotes and what sorts of interesting and useful names would you like to see used as suggested unit names?

Beknighted "We are the Knights that say... Bees!"

Knights: "We're Knights that Fight...."

Guards: "Welcome Home"

Hoplites: "Hop Hop, Jump"

Archers: "Trolls Eye!"

"Come on, you apes!  You wanta live forever?"
--Unknown platoon sergeant, 1918

(preface from Heinlein's Starship Troopers (great book, horrible movie)

Heinlein's quote is based upon:

"Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?"

--Sergeant Major Daniel Joseph "Dan" Daly* during the Battle pf Belleau Wood, when, besieged, outnumbered, outgunned, and pinned down, he led his men in attack.

*Daniel Joseph "Dan" Daly (November 11, 1873 – April 27, 1937) was a United States Marine and one of only 19 men to have received the Medal of Honor twice.

The original quote's language is likely too 'salty' but Heinlein's catchy version would make a good substitute.

A lot of people are giving a unit name and an quote for that unit. If you read Frogboy's post closely, the game is going to suggest a random unit name and a random quote.

I'd suggest the game have a button we can hit to see a pick list of unit names and their quotes. Random isn't sounding too useful.

More random quotes:

'You cannot test my patience, for that is something I do not have.'

'Die when you are spoken to.'

'I live for <insert Empire/Kingdom name here>.'

'I die for <insert Empire/Kingdom name here>.'

'I kill for <insert Empire/Kingdom name here>.'

'I <insert verb here> for <insert Empire/Kingdom name here>.'

'The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began.'

'Do not be so quick to deal out death in judgement.'

'You do not see what lies ahead, when sun is faded and moon is dead.'

'There can be only one.'

'I dare what you dare not.'

'There are older and fouler things in the deep places of the world.'

'Power is but a wreckless dream, and I am the dream catcher.'

Heavy Calvary
'There is no dishonour in a quick Death'

"For unit names I lean towards the side of practicality - a player can then decide something "fancier" later. I do think a system where armor and weapon levels/types play into it would give enough flavor... so units with high move/speed could be "scouts" or "rangers". Armor types Light/Medium/Heavy... weapon types, archers, longbowmen, spearmen, swordsmen etc."    Agreed.

"I'd suggest the game have a button we can hit to see a pick list of unit names and their quotes. Random isn't sounding too useful."   Agreed, except maybe have a "try again" button like we have in the beta for city name, world names etc.

Anyway, I care more about meaningful unit names.  I'll pretty much accept & ignore whatever you do with units quotes.

My favorite quote comes from the icewind dale series but i'm sure it can be tweaked to fit elemental.

"Here I come and the hells come with me."

The quote works best for a heavy melee unit

I've seen it paraphrased here but it is IMO better to go with the original:

"Speak softly and carry a big stick" -Theodore Rosevelt (who was quoting an African proverb so I guess it's not really the original)

Here are a few I thought of....  Some would only work for specialized characters, such as champions or other units, etc.  Others would be more generalizable.

Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once (W. Shakespeare).

Death and dice level all distinctions (Samuel Foote).

No army can withstand the strength of an idea whose time has come (V. Hugo).

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage (Anais Nin).

Every man dies, but not every man really lives [William Wallace (Braveheart)].

I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds [J. Robert Oppenheimer (quoting Bhagavad-Gita at the detonation of the first A-bomb)]

He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster.  When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you. (F. Nietzsche).

Give me chastity and continence, but not yet (St. Augustine).

Preach the gospel everyday; if necessary, use words (St. Francis of Assisi).

Diplomacy is the art of saying ‘Nice doggie’ until you can find a rock (Will Rogers).

What we do in life echoes an eternity [Maximus (Gladiator)].

A belief is like a guillotine, just as heavy, just as light (F. Kafka).

Not all who wander are lost (J.R.R. Tolkein).

I would also hope that some more humerous things get incorporated.  Quotes from the Evil Dead Series, or similar things, would be much appreciated.

In one of the earlier betas I had a unit type that had as little training and armor as possible and called it "Useless Fodder"

That name would fit better if it were used for a summonable horde of extremely weak units (trash golems? undead that have been digested by some large animal?)

Burglar wants a good job, plenty of Excitement and reasonable Reward, that’s how it is usually read. You can say Expert Treasure-hunter instead of Burglar if you like. Some of them do. It’s all the same to us. – J.R.R. Tolkien,The Hobbit

EDIT: "Wonna see a magic trick? I'm going to make this (noun) disappear."

"Pointy end goes where?"

"The secret is to stab them until they die."

"Stabbity stabbity stab stab stab!"

"Look! A diversion!"

"I've hunted smarter prey than you."

"I bring the pain!"

'I think this place would look better in red."

"When in doubt, wipe them out."

Just as easy as one can blot out the sun with a thousand arrows? 8| :-"

I always liked the quotes from Warcraft II that you heard when clicking on a unit several times in a row. Especially the footmen were quite funny. They would at some point go all pissy about signing up for duty. " 'Join the army' they said... 'See the world' they said..." "I'd rather be sailing." The voice acting was brilliant here as the footman really sounded annoyed finding himself in some remote place where he never expected himself to be. Classic. :)

The death knight - or what was the name of this magician unitof the orc that rode a skeleton horse and had his face hidden under a hood - was also awesome. I forgot what he said exectly, but at some point he would go silent upon clicking him, then he would scream "Stop that incessant clicking!" until when he was pushed to far he would say "When my work is finished I'm coming back for you'."

These quotes are probably not very easy to use or usedul for me to post, but I thought I'd share them. :)

Since not all races have a moral values that reflect ours, at least a few quotes should be about it being pleasant to deliver pain to enemies and how blood will be drawn to please long forgotten gods and such. The quotes about heroics are still mandatory of course, but there should also be some quotes that some hidious evel being may say.

Here is a mixture of heroic and dark quotes:

"None take these walls whilst we still draw breath!"

"Chances of violence in the near future are rising... Excellent."

"We shall display the heads of our enemies on pikes so all can see what happens to those who defy us."

"Not even the titans shall stand between us and victory."

"We shall stand against the hordes of evil and fight 'till the last man, lest we shall shall see everything we love and hold dear defiled."

"Bow down, mortals! Cower in fear!"

"Sledgehammer, meet some face. Face, this is sledgehammer."

"Tonight, the soil will turn red."

"For what was sone to my family, there is no excuse. May the Gods show them no mercy like they showed no mercy to us."

A meager try to translate (from Danish) a quote that my fathers teacher in german taught him (I know this is far out but anyway)

"Somebody never learns - others even later"

Edit: And another:

"Same old story - same old song"
