Elemental Player Input: Unit names and quotes

Elemental Player Input: Unit names and quotes

image

When players design a unit that are asked to give it a name and a quote.

However, we don’t want players to feel like they have to do this.  To that end, we want to create a system where the game will “recommend” a randomly picked name and a randomly picked quote.

We thought it might be fun to let the beta testers get their suggestions on this into the game.

To that end, what kinds of fun and interesting quotes would you like be randomly selected as the default quotes and what sorts of interesting and useful names would you like to see used as suggested unit names?

I'm not sure about quotes, but a practical (from a programming point of view, I suppose) would be to simply take two or three of their strongest attributes, compare it to an XML file (or whatever you'd like to use so players can make their own suggested names), and grab a name.

So a unit with the best armour and high attack might be an "Iron Soldier", or something similar. A ranged unit with high attack and high speed, could be "Swiftfoot Scout/Ranger". You get the point, anyway.

I guess I like D&D-esque classifications for things, but that's just me.

First, I must say that in the final game comic quotes should be kept separate in some way from serious/normal ones, oherwise they will ruin the mood of any serious campaign/sandbox.

Some quotes, inspired or taken from Star Wars:

"May [name of your channeler] be with us!"

"And at last we shall have ... peace."

"Wipe them out - all of them!"

"Time to dispense with the pleasanties"

"The courts take too long to decide ..."

"We fight not for ours but for their sake"

"For the common good!"

"Yes, master"

"Your wish is my command"

"The chances of surving [name of your channeler]'s wrath are nil!"

"We'll teach them some respect."

"It's unwise to lower you defenses"

"They cannot hide forever""

"They shall pay the price for their lack of vision!"

"If they won't be turned, they shall be destroyed!"

"Those fools, only now at the end do they understand"

"And now: they will die."

"If they are not with us they are our enemy"

"Together we shall rule Elemental!"

"I need more men"

"We are quite safe from those pitiful little bands"

"Negotiations? Just tell me when they are over ..."

"Don't underestimate the power of the [unit or weapon type, or name of channeler]"

"War doesn't make one great - but it's necessary / a pleasure!"

"I beg you to use my power!"

"I am Elemental!"

"Are you threatening me?"

"Now watch the /fire/ power of this fully armed and operational battle legion"

"Those rebel scum!"

"[Name of enemy chaneller] is young and naive"

"We must act swiftly!

Various:

"There can be only one channeler"

"[Name of channeler] is the Word / Light /Law / Reason."

"Just show me where they are"

"The meek shall inherit nothing"

Finally I have to add for all American friends:

"Don't ask, and I won't tell!"^_^

I would also like the idea that Sovereigns (and heroes?) have quotes that seem more "epic" compared to the ones of normal units. Quotes that reflect their status as leaders, legends, tacticians, etc. The traits of the sovereign could influence those quotes but not necessarily those of their units.

Here are a few (from DragonLance):

For a holy leader: "Until we conquer the evils within ourselves we can never conquer the great evil that threatens to engulf us!"

"The darkness might conquer, but it could never extinguish hope, and though one candle, or many, may flicker and die, new candles would be lit from the old. Thus hopes flame always burns, lighting the darkness until the coming of day." (Cut it in half since it's pretty long)

"Honor is not something to be spent or used but to be kept. The key to honor is to keep it, always, and pass it on as a heritage to ones' son."

"For heroes - anyone who rises upon the face of the world to stand against evil - true greatness lies not in the adventures, but in honor."

 Or some more "normal" quotes:

"Magic will be my sword."

"Come on, you insignificant firefly! I have seen bigger sparks from steel and stone"

"A mage's soul is forged in the crucible of the magic."

"My honor is my life"

"It's the small tings that make the difference." (For some small but powerful units)

"Only the dead are without fear."

"I'm fearless, not stupid."

A LOT of good quotes have been proposed by others, I'm amazed by the quality of this post in terms of good war quotes!

"We have no quarrel with thee. We have quarrel with those who sent thee!"

Sounds like an idea that might work best when you start creating Companies or Regiment sized groups.

Single units could be quite varied and might best be suited to the K.I.S.S principle... :|

It would be cool if we could insert variables from the game -  I think it would help in the immersion aspect:

%S = Sovereign - "My life for %S."

%K = Kingdom - "I was not born in %K, and I do not plan on dieing here either."

%O = Random Other Unit - "I was going to be a %O, they get all the ladies."

Other Quotes:

Peasant At Arms:  "I tilled your land, I built your manor, and this is how you pay me back for all those kind unselfish loving deeds?"

Guard/Official:  "I am sorry, but this document must be notarized.."

If we had a data file of quotations, with the ability to tag quotations, and could have units auto-tagged on the backend based on their stats or somewhat, the engine could then suggest good quotations.

I think quotations from the classics is a good idea; no muddy copywright issues that way.

For units with names ending in ".. Infantry".

"The (mobile) infantry made me the man I am today."

"MEDIC!!"

My vote is for practical (descriptive and short) names, possibly individualized after production with a unit number (heavy infantry, 3rd regiment of [city-name]). I'd prefer to see humorous quotes.

"When do we start the killing?"

"This place is all we have. I won't let you harm it!"

"He questioned me. It was obviously a suicide."

"Do you know what would really liven up this battle? Fire."

"They will have my answer when it plunges between their ribs."

"You should run. It won't save you, but I promise to find it entertaining."

"I am in your city slaying your peasants."

"That's 'MISTER bloodthirsty mongrel' to you!"

"Take comfort in the knowledge that you are not the only one of your people to die this day."

"Many things may await you in the afterlife, but loneliness will not be one of them."

"Did you send this whole army just for me? It's good to see you taking this seriously."

"Your strategy is flawed. It is time we educated you."

"These are fine lands. They will serve us well."

"Whether it be in gold or in blood, you will pay."

"I like you. Remind me to animate your corpse when this is over."

Regarding names, please give us the option of later giving a specific unit a new name.

 - It allows us to track specific units, thus becoming fond of them.  "York's First Foot"

 - It allows honorary names to units which distinguish themselves in battle "His Magesty's Own HorseGuard" or "Conquorors of Fort Grizzard"

 - It allows us to award unit decorations.  "York's First Foot*" (Where * signifies an award for valor)

This would be in addition to generic names identifying Unit type.  We might, for example, have:  Hospitalier Infantry/Heavy Armor/Pike  "King's Household Dragonbanes *^"
