If it was me, I would have ripped his head off, and after smashing his fave real good, I would tell him to shove his Marine crap up his bottom.
If the result would be to get my own ass kicked, then that would be fine, because he would have some nice scars on his face as well.
But.....you did the smart thing, and just backed off. I would advise you to do exactly what you did, if you asked for my advice (hypothetically speaking), before this happened.

Ifear is correct, you are facing a jarhead bully (not a true Marine), they don't like to feel pain (in other words he will wash out or stop being such a jarhead) so when you show that pain means nothing to you and you are willing to dish it out then he will back off
