People of Elemental: the Empires

People of Elemental: the Empires

The Empires of the East are dominated by races of beings collectively known as “The Fallen”. These are beings that bred by the Titans of old to be better than the mortal men and dragons and other “natural” creatures of the world.

There are lots of Fallen creatures in the world. The Empires are led by beings that are both sentient and social (dragons, are sentient but are solitary).

The Empires believe in the justice of raw strength and strive to increase their power.

The Magnar sovereign is male.

the Trog is protecting herself with the Sword. The Magical one has a very deadly and intimidating pose, as well as her legs actualy not being as spread as the others. The Magnar is thin because he is an elf. His Chest plate is exactly that, not a breastplate. Also the expressed image of the face is quite masculine and the hips are not wide enough.

The Magnar guy, in form of body, looks much like Krax, while the Trog and the Uxen have a very similar pose as well.

a Female dark-elf would mostlikely wish to look both imposing and alluring, as opposed to Trog and Uxen whom merely wish to look imposing and scary. Part of that imposing is using their wide hips to large visual effect, or perhaps the Artist approached the result backwards since there is no actual physiology at play. This Magnar is merely only looking imposing with a hint of lithe, and absolutely no emotion on his face. He has long and full white hair, this is true, however its not being used in any sort of ornamental fashion. He is pure warrior, even if he doesn't have the Mass you would expect of a giant warlord, however if you look at the rest of the photos the Men are either Rogue or Sorceror while the females are in more of a warlord stance. I would imagine a picture of a Magnar Female Soveriegn to be even more imposing ... and above all to look 10 times as deadly while at the same time to have a Dominating, yet very female, allure. To assume the Magnar is male is, to me, a lack of imagination as to what a demon-elf female would look like. If nothing else, look to the hips, as well as the similarity of stance that the Krax and the Magnar Sov's are standing.

I would assume this Magnar fellow is more or less a stand-in, a Regent for a more powerful Female Elven Sorceress or Warrior. I could be very mistaken in the relative powers of this Male Magnar, although I have a feeling he is "Mediocre" when it comes to Magnar generals/channelers. In any case, powerful as he may be (to my lack of knowledge) I am very certain that he is male.

But most of all, the Factions in EWoM seem to be a bit generic.
I completely agree with you.

Richard Burlew, author of the excellent webcomics "the Order of the Stick" and occasional gamedesigner (and D&D GM) once wrote an unfinished 9-parts diary of an exercise in world creation, and it really detailed the process through which he went through to make sure his world wouldn't feel generic. Now, I might be wrong about that feeling, but yeah, generic is how I'd describe Elemental's world right now.

Anyway, Gorgon describes a very good example of how to make Elemental's world unique, by giving it a very distinctive style that deviates from the "Elven Legacy/Age of Wonders/15 kinds of elves" standard fantasy universe that no one remembers.

Seems fairly original to me - they're modified/improved/tampered with humans, not different 'species' in the traditional fantasy sense.. And there's only one type of 'elf'. While all the kingdoms are just flat out humans, just with different human 'races' in the real world sense, on top of different cultures

Actually yes, it seems to be generic, but I am not really worried because of this. -> Modding. ;)

Don't worry ... that'll all change when we make a Fall From Heaven mod for it ;)

but seriously, I like how the game looks to be headed already .... Ill have two games to love, ELemental, and Elemental:Fall from Heaven

Having generic factions is less important than how truly differant they are in implementation imo. If indeed thay have their own spell-book, buildings, heroes etc and aren't simply reskins of other factions as we see in so many RTS's (sometimes for balance purposes, other times through lack of imagination or through the limits of the engine etc) and are fully fleshed-out and unique with plenty of individual flavour then I couldn't care if the ghost of Tolkien was designing the Empires. Ensuring the factions have definative strengths and weaknesses is more of a complexity for the designers but far more rewarding for the gaming experiance.

hmm... is it just me?

i don't know if anybody mentioned already but Krax looks like he is giving you the middle finger...

What is that thing on his hand, anyway?

This happens if you play to much with your wiener ;) It is a hand knife attached on the back of his hand.

Can-opener? When you're trying to establish an evil empire you need the protein only a can of Hot-dog sausages can give you. Beans tend to make your fellow minions sit far away from you come supper time.

Of the Empire pictures I definitely prefer the last one, Kraxis (beautiful gold on his mantle and armour). But I do note that he looks (not just inspired by, but really looks) like an arab/persian, so I hope you are not putting this in as the one evil, "blood traitor" human race while the Kingdoms will be all filled with fairskinned blonds (of European/American looks ...). Skimming over the Kingdom pics it actually looks like this could be the case. It's not about striving for PC 100%, but this one just seemed to be so evident, but I wait until we've seen more before complaining at all.

I agree with all of your post Except this one part. Man, you're not really throwing that card out there are you? lol. The dude looks pretty white to me. Maybe a white guy with dark hair.

My family/ancestry is Italian. Contrary to popular belief there are plenty of Italians who have blond hair and blue eyes yet the media almost always portrays us as being overweight with New Yorkish accents with black hair and big noses. Hell, Nintendo turned us all into plumbers with big mustaches that jump down pipes to save white chicks who are afraid of Turtles.

Honestly, I don't think having any kind of Eastern look has anything to do with the Kraxis being called "Blood Traitors". I think they call them that because even though they are pure human they decided to go with Empirical Death magic instead of the Kingdoms Life magic. I suppose if what you suggest is that big of an issue they could take the current Kraxis picture and change it's place with one of the current Kingdom faction's pictures.

It's a fantasy game, my friend, I don't think the resemblance was enough to warrant a relation to real life cultures though.

4. The factions will always be referred to in the UI by their official name. There won't be "demon elves" as an official name in the user interface for instance.

Question. Does that mean that if I name my customized version of the blue skinned race "The Ravenites" that the current game I'm playing won't call them "The Ravenites"?

Hmm, and here i was quite certain that thing in Krax's hand was a playing card.

I was going to assume the Ace of Diamonds.

He looks like he is going to throw the Card at you like Gambit from X-men.

That Kraxian looks cool, if only because he looks like he belongs to a faction that will allow me to execute people for failure.
