eh? Pay for Object Dock 2.0 Beta? Without even a new Feature list?

eh? Pay for Object Dock 2.0 Beta? Without even a new Feature list?

Ok, so being an old time object dock user, I got the pre-order email to get into the beta. And while $10 - $20 dollars isn't the end of the world,I think it is kinda lame to charge to help you test out and fix your software. Not only do you want us to lay out money to help you fix bugs, but you didn't even give us a feature list of the upcoming ObjectDock Plus 2.0.

Am I missing something here or is this just poor marketing.  Don't get me wrong. I love object dock plus, but not enough to pay for something that I have no idea what I'm paying for..

Stardock, you might want to rethink this...

Here here! No need to get huffy.

Ditch, is it possible that you got ObjectDock Plus & ObjectDesktop together in some kind of a promo or something?

Around this time last year there was a promo where ObjectDock Plus was included with Object Desktop renewals. Aside from the occasional promo, ObjectDock Plus is not included with Object Desktop subscriptions.

@DisturbedComputer - thanks for the screeenshot, I was wondering how I had gotten OD+ - that explains it nicely!

Money speaks loudly, this product has been on life support for some time. Stardock, you have my 10 dollars. Let's see some focus on this product. You pulled Jeff off to do "fences", which, in my mind was far less important than updating objectdock plus. Fences is really cool by the way. But why are you focusing on new features when your old features no longer work on the Vista and above? There are a ton of  features we pay for every year that just don't work on our machines. ODNT lately means "windowblinds (good luck getting anything else working)"

ps. could you bring back windowfx from the dead too?

That's how I got my copy of Object Dock plus.

I wonder in this case, do we get a free update to 2.0 since it was included with Object Desktop?

This thread is broken for IE users (because of the code in reply 54 when you view edits)

DisturbedComputer....I stripped 2 solid pages of word doc html from your post...as it broke the thread in IE.

It's preferred you don't use word processors...;)

To Stephenv:

WindowFX

Sorry, no screenshots yet but this is going to be a major effort this year too. There’s a lot of new improvements to Windows 7, Vista, and XP we will be making this year.  Users of Object Desktop get all our desktop goodies first. And this year, there’s going to be a lot.

Please show some info that it will work on Windows 7 64 bit.I cannot see myself paying for beta also. I will pay asap if bug fix with 64 bit but only then.

ObjectDock 2.0 will work/be supported on 64 bit operating systems aside from Windows XP 64 bit.

I've been a supporter of ObjectDock through all of the critical posts thus far, but this wording concerns me.

Will OD 2.0 simply work on 64-bit OS's like 1.9 does now, or will it be fully functional on 64-bit OS's to include currently inactive features like start menu and system tray?

LOL, anal is not a bad thing, especially when referring to anything Windows related!

Just to add my 2 cents on the beta/pre-order price.

I was going to pre-order, but I don't have a previous version of object dock+, and there is no option to get the Object Desktop Subscriber discount (that I would if I ordered 1.9+).  I like the feeling of getting a deal; sadly paying the full $20 to get into a beta does not.

Plus, so far I don't see a big difference from 1.9+.

The discount you're referencing, if I'm understanding you correctly, was a special that was run for a limited time. There aren't any other discounts that I'm aware of on ObjectDock +.

I'm confused as to how you could see a big difference when there's no feature list given at this time.

I think he's referring to the 25% ($5) discount that Object Desktop subscribers get when buying Plus 1.9. It shows on the Plus site page towards the bottom.

Well, my ignorance is showing. Sorry, Dave and Burnt, I didn't know about that one.

I am quite displeased with the fact that Stardock are charging people to participate in the beta. Sure, at some point down the line this charge account for the updates between 2.0 and 3.0. However, for the time being, people are paying to test software, make no mistake about that. Conventionally, that's not something that people are charged for since they are doing a good deed to the developer, especially with bug reports and notifications of incompatibility issues.

There also seems to be a distinct lack of information. What is the feature set of this beta? What are the system requirements? Where is the changelog? What is the refund policy? Information seems to be either fragmented between forums/posts or non-existent. Stardock is eager to take the money, but is rather vague on the details.

I appreciate that no one HAS to pay for OD 2.0 Beta. That being said, it strikes at the heart of the principle that, after so many delays and lack of updates, people have to pay to try to see if bugs/incompatibilities that they have experienced are ironed out. Why can't existing OD+ users have free access to a time-limited 2.0 Beta? The cost of providing that beta for free would be off-set by harvesting input of people who participate in that beta to make the product work better, leading to higher sales.

I also noticed that some people made remarks implying that $10 is a petty amount. I am happy for you guys that you have such deep pockets to shell out impulsively and cut your losses if it doesn't work out. Not everyone can do that and not everyone should do that. It is fundamentally wrong to charge people to test software (even if there's a perk of getting an upgrade attached to it).

This was exactly my point. They are eager to take money, and slow to make updates or keep us informed.

I purchased Object Dock Plus a couple years ago. I received no email offer and can"t find anything about a beta in the store for $10.00. How do I sign up?

I don't have it installed on this computer since I installed win 7. Reason is i was waiting for the new version. Now that it will be available soon I would like to sign up for it when it's released.
