I totally understand that kind of a viewpoint as that's what I impose on my own universe's creation. Everything from characters to technology to ships to events goes through an in-depth review and thought process before I decide to add it.
Yes, We do frown upon "fan" made desgins. Do not take this at all personal, but most fan designs tend to be outright absurd. There are a few exceptions that do catch our eye. That is because actual thought was put into the design functionality, and purpose. Instead of the "coolness" factor. Oversimplistic, and thoughtless designs like slapping an extra warp nacelle, or rollbar like ST: Online did with the Soveriegn, and calling it a new class of ship. Along with my biggest pet peeve... The Romulan starbases that are shaped like bird beaks, and frieghtors with the overkill bird design. Those designs are totally unacceptable to us. Along with stretching, and distorting an existing canon ship, and calling it a new class of ship. Unacceptable. We want this mod to be the best. So we demand the best artwork. We also want our art to have functionality, and to at least make some kind of sense. Just like Genes original vision. Not berman, and Braga's, JJ Abrams vision, or some over-enthusiastic fanboys vision. I am sorry, but those designs above are not acceptable to us, because they are random mergers of the Soveriegn, the Akira, the Defiant. and some "gee i dont know what that is". If time was taken to think about what the ships purpose is (warship? explorer? support ship?), How well armed it is (battleship? cruiser? escort?), how fast it should be (thrust to mass ratio? how large is the ship? is the size necessary for the ships role?). Does it "have" to be a frankenstien of other existing ships? Can you make a unique, and original design that follows loosely the starship liniage? To see examples of what i expect from 3rd party artists check out Atolm Risings work in SFC. He has done some interesting things with the romulans, and we are using some of his works in the mod. This is not meant to discorage you from creating art. Quite the opposite. My intention is to encorage you to open your mind. To think. To plan your designs. Dont think about how "cool" it will be. "Coolness" in Trek breeds stupidity. As we learn from Voyager, Nemesis, Enterprise, and damn near every trek game since SFC. Think about its role, its purpose, and how it would fit into the big picture. What would Matt Jefforeys, or Gene Roddenbury do?
I guess my question is: Are there episodes I've forgotten about that show any of the structures you need??? I can't remember if they ever showed a Rommie Star base... if not then if I were designing a Rommie Starbase I wouldn't lok at the ships (bird-beak), I would go look at all the available pics of the Romulin Homeowrld... How are their buildings designed??? What is their style of archetecture??? Remember a starbase is more like an orbiting building than a ship... I would do the same with the Dommies, but I dont remember ever seeing anything of theirs... I still like Tarok Nor, but technically that's Cardassian.
I would do some myself, but my 3-D software is old (Lightwave 5.6), and honestly I'd have to pull out a couple books first just to catch up with you guys. I can look around at older eisodes and see if I can find anything...
Speaking of... I watched Q Who yesterday on YouTube for the hell of it and I caught another Borg Ability... "A Shield Stripper"...lol.. Near the end of the episode the Enterprise is hauling ass away from the cube, and the cube starts firing what looks like green photons at Enterprise. Did absolutly no damage, but knocked the shields down like 40%... 3 hits and the shields were gone... 4th one and they lost the warp core...
Now I know it kinda makes the Borg even more OP... but you asked for abilities...hehehe...
Can anyone help me out with troubleshooting so that i can get this mod working? I just downloaded entrenchment off of impulse but when I downloaded this Star Trek Mod it doesn't work. Is there something Im doing wrong? Please help me out if anyone can.
Cardassin Starbases were shown in DS9 as the same type as the ones in Star Trek Armada 2 but they also used the Deep Space 9 model.
Romulan Starbases have never been shown and Star Fleet Command 3 and Star Trek Armada both have differnt verisons, I do prefer the SFC 3 one though.
Look in your sins mods folder (locations are on the main topic) Make sure you have the SoA 2 folder in your Mods-v1.05 folder. Check the SoA 2 folder to make sure there is not another SoA 2 folder inside of it. If there is move it to mods 1.05 then delete the empty SoA 2 folder. The installer needs fixing and we know this already. It will get done soon.
The SFC 3 Romulan starbase is the idiotic bird beak base i was reffering to. We have a romulan starbase design that i will mesh myself soon.
I don't think fan designs are a bad thing, per se, but many of them are just slapped together bits of different ships. What I was hoping for is a "true" battleship design that is also official, like the Sovereign. Is the Prometheus class canon? Could have sworn it is.
Also, I used to own ST: Legacy on 360, I don't remember there being a rollbar on the game's Sovereign class. I'm pretty sure a rollbar would ruin the Sovereign's awesome look; they look good on certain ships, like the Miranda refit and the Akira (love the Akira), but they shouldn't be thrown on random hull designs.
Here's another "official(ish)" Rommie Starbase Design, doesn't look too bad really:
http://i32.tinypic.com/facu10.jpg
And also, I don't know what you have planned for the Federation Orbital Refinery, but I much prefer this one to the Armada one.
The rollbar on the Soveriegn is in ST:Online. Along with a JJprise with TMP nacelles (which is actually an improvement of the ship IMO) I didnt have issue with most of the legacy ship designs. Rick Knox (p81) did most of the modeling for Legacy. He got the TMP era spot on. My biggest beef was legacys TOS era. Just plain sloppy work. I expected much better from rick in that area.
Ill say again... We have a romulan starbase design. Refinery is low priority, but when we get to it we will ether make or find an appropriete design.

I think the Romulans are the kind of people who would hang out in an evil bird-shaped DOOM FORTRESS just 'cause.
Major Stress, im running Win 7 so maybe it is a little different for me on my files locations, I cant find a mods folder in my sins folder of files. Is this something I need to create? And also the one im downloading basically is the soa20.4.1.e.msi and basically im saving it to my desktop then im opening and installing and then im guessing this is the file that i have to move to the correct folder but im just not seeing it. Sorry im new at this obviously
Anthony, it'll be in your C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Ironclad\ etc folder.
Still not finding that folder!! Strangest things im gonna uninstall and reinstall everything so i can start fresh
please make sure that you have loaded entrenchment 1.05 and click mods next click show mod path. This should create a mod folder if there isnt already one. Also will show you the file location. thanks jtaylorpcs
AppData is hidden by default.
Navigate to C:\Users\YourUserName

Open the Folder Options under the "View" Tab and turn on "Show hidden files".

You shoud now see the "AppData" folder. Navigate to
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\GameVersionModFolder
Hope this helps
the folder will not be created until you run it for the first time. Once you run it for the first time, then go back, also you might need to unhide your folders (which you have to find you yourself, lol, I am still runing XP which is FTW)
ok well back from my trip
The cruiser borg file you mentioned is a relic from the past (dropped due to far to many cubes being present on the map and flying intoeach other really took some of the STness away from it)
YES the borg capitals WILL EVENTUALLY get abilities for now they dont
for instance the First contactc cube / carrier will have a support sphere with it if it wants it ![]()
the capitals cubes dont really have the planet bombing ability since eventually the borg perfect the nanite bombs so they just fire some of those at the planets population and fly off and thus the planet is assimilated with out destroying the valuble resources of the planets aka drones production capabilities etc *tho this would be a lvl 6 or 8 teir ability etc
as well with this planet bombing stuff i dont want you to have a cube that can just wipe the floor with everything (yes i know that is S TREK but we need some sort of balance) so id rather YOU the player be FORCED to build other ships than spamm one type !
borg have been buffed once again for this upcoming patch !
It's funny how somebody (QTD I think) mentioned Roddenberry didn't like 3rd warp nacelles, since they seemed to become pseudo-cannon while he was notionally on-watch over TNG. If you recall, the grand finale (All Good Things...) featured a future Enterprise-D with a third nacelle added. That may be what the "Entendre Class Dreadnaught" above is trying to show, but it's just ugly. It's like strapping square metal boxes on a ship that was supposed to look sleek like a dolphin.
Why? Prolly because it was cheap to build the model.
Why? Prolly because it was cheap to build the model.
I agree with you on that. Also for what if counts if we wanted huge ship designs our crew defintly could build them better than that. Cause They have skills. Speaking of which the dominion starbase is coming along nicely and will have some pics for everyone to see soon.![]()
Is the romulan starbase in? I had trouble figuring out where to build it. Love those warbirds.
Really wanting to use this mod with diplomacy though.... any way of retro fitting it?
Why? Prolly because it was cheap to build the model.
The excuse behind the third nacelle on that future Enterprise is that it has a double set of warp coils inside, while the other two only have a single set. Flimsy reasoning? Yes, but they were looking for some way to make the future Enterprise look cool. It's like a hot rod, to be honest.
While I totally disagree with Stress on most of the newer designs we see in Enterprise and Nemesis (I don't hold alien species to the same design prerequisites that humans hold), he and I are of one mind on the fan designs. There truly are very few that are worth a second look, and occassionally there's a canon design that falls into this category as well, unfortunately.
They say in some books the reason for the eliptical shape of federation ships is to ride the warp bubble. But no other races seem to have that trouble and reach the same speeds?
For the Federations' technological development, and how they designed said technology, the 'saucer' shape was the best shape and fit for them for the best warp field. Each race is different in how they invented their technology and how they wanted to use it, regardless of the same basic principles, such as warp fields.
Zephram Cochrane first's ship (the Phoenix as shown in First Contact) wasn't saucer shaped at all, and in fact was an old nuclear missile body but it still worked for his purposes. As the Federation developed the warp coils and inertial dampeners and ect ect.. they discovered that the saucer shape was the best fit for their technology and provided the best results in using that technology.
Obviously, other races developed their own technology but it is similiar in most regards. But, in how they developed their technology also influenced their ship-building. Also, other factors, like building materials, metal composition, and placement of warp coils also affect the shape and integrity of the warp field.
As technology progresses, the Federation is slowly moving away from predominately saucer themed ships. The Prometheus, Defiant, and the Norway designs immediately spring to mind.
Now, technical explanation aside.. (Which is just my own opinion, though based on Star Trek technical manuals and my own observations watching the shows) The Saucer shape is the most predominant visual image of anything alien or really, space related of all time. Going all the way back to H.G. Wells and such. Gene Roddenberry, most likely used it in his ship designs to pay homage to all the great science fiction that came before him. But again, that's just my opinion.
Each faction has its own way of getting to warp, romulans use a singularity drive, federation warp drive... klingons a different type of warp drive... and so on.
Just a fyi a patch is on the way . The patch will address some gameplay and stat changes. We added missing componets of the user interface. Borg were adjusted and We also found the time to add some new content in for you!!! With this release we rounded some of the rough edges Soa2 had.
The dominon and romulan starbases are being worked on as we speak. Missing componets of the hud are now in and all ships / structures have working icons. Some albiet placeholders. Enjoy and keep the ideas a flowing for ablities, the dominon need some love
thanks jtaylorpcs
