Elemental: Pen & Paper

Elemental: Pen & Paper

imageI’ve always wanted to do this but never had the opportunity to try it out since schedules are usually too tight for it.  But would anyone here be interested in playing a game of Elemental…via pen and paper…over the Internet through a series of posts?

I would need 5 volunteers who are in the beta, are active players and would have enough time actually play a game back and forth online (almost like PBEM).  We’d set up a simplified rule set but the idea would be to work through game mechanics and decide what is, and isn’t fun.

I would be your DM for the game.  Respond here if you’re interested, have the beta, and have time to play.

Looks like you have plenty of volunteers, but it would still be interesting if everyone can see how the game is progressing. Then we can comment and speculate ad nausium, just like we all love to do!

I'm interested.

The Dark Canuckreply 4I'd be very interested in doing this. Sounds like a lot of fun.How simplified will the rule system be for this test? Given Frogboy ideas about fun in beta you are obviously out .

Hey, some of us have different ideas of fun. Which may include frustration, eye-bleeding, and all that other "fun" stuff.

further to cephalo - any informatino on how this would work would be great and, speaking for myself, given a set of instructions i'm sure a few more PBEM's could be set up, there's certainly seems to be the interest.

2 Questions frogboy.

1)  When you DM, do you wear a cape?  (PBEM is no execption)

2)  How often do you evoke rule 0?

I know in the past you said you lurk on penny-arcade, check out what Tycko has been doing with his D&D layouts.

Count me in if you need me. I'm available anytime day or night. I live in front of my PC.

I would love to do this but with all these annoying holidays coming up I'll try to be a mature adult and exclude myself, not that you have a lack of volunteers.  I don't suppose there's any chance of a round 2, or of sharing the rules and letting multiple games run when they are ready?

Here's something interesting.  It would go with my Dominions game.  Shame I'm still a bit sick though, but I would be happy to be in this.

I'm interested.

Just don't have anything happen late at night when I'm sleeping (and thus unable to respond), or you'll make not like you.

Anyways, do you want us to inform you of anything we would like to be able to do when the chance presents itself. For instance, I like the idea of creating super units that are powerful in battle, and can use a number of special abilities.

this could be loads of fun, but with school work the toddler and the new baby I don't think I have the time for it.  It's a wonderful idea to run analog prototypes for games.

Aww :'(   I've always wanted to play a table top RPG but they've always been so confusing to learn on my own, and there aren't any places to play or learn near my town. I work 8 hours (7:30-4) but i check this site everyday when i get home and would have absolutely no other obligations, i am in the beta, and would be very interested but i understand if you want veteran players too, it would probably be very hard to teach and play. So I also vouch for it to be posted where everyone can read it

Did you just hire someone off the street to pose as your wife on those Halloween pics? If not I would like to know how you are allowed to do this (I am not as you might guess :( )

Doesn't matter, no fun for you tester boy! }:)

I'm pretty late to the party, but if more people are needed, I'd be interested. It's something I can even do during downtime at work, which is starting to come fairly frequently.

turn1 - Channeler found city, name Alpha
Channeler use full movement to go NE, pause if any enemy or feature of interest is encountered

Alpha - build 5 houses
Alpha - train 1 defender, name Bob

Start researching Adventure

message Machina - "As two of the last people to reply lets form an alliance. Clearly MagicwillNZ and SavageBananaMan34 are too rash and do not take time to think things over! Besides who can really trust someone with more than one capital in their name?"

message SavageBananaMan34 - "Greetings fellow Fallen, let us join our power to crush the simpering self styled channeler Machina! If we strike now when he is weak we will be able to crush him before he suspects a thing. This world is ours to take, we must not allow the weak time to invest it like the cancer they are."

message MagicwillNZ - "SavageBananaMan34 just sent me a request to join an alliance with him and Machina, they think to gang up on you first to quickly remove you from power. I am appalled at such backstabbing! How can we ever hope to rebuild the wastelands with such behavior? Join with me and we can prevent their tyranny!"

I hope I am not the only one to RP my play by email games ;) I would love to participate, as a new father I find the hardest thing with playing any kind of multiplayer game these days is not that I do not have time, it is that I do not have large blocks of time. This style of frequent asynchronous updates is perfect for me. I also often work odd hours and would have the ability to participate throughout the day and evening.

I would be interested but realistically don't have time to committ reliably.

Would like to, but so many things to do IRL, sadly...

I was gone for the weekend, but yes I'd be very interested.

I'm an old school roleplayer so I'd love this sort of thing, and since I'm still unemployed I've got no shortage of time! As an added bonus I've done this type of thing for WotC before.

Well I've roleplayed pnp like this on smaller scales in the past like being the town mayor a very long time ago.

Here is the feedback I can offer:  The unknown is one of your best weapons as a GameMaster when doing a game like this.  Sending out army units to carry out specific orders past the players vision and communication boundary can be powerful when done right.  Sometimes scouts report back, sometimes they don't and sometimes your whole macho army can vanish without a trace never to return without explanation.  To the player that's really scary.  8C

I don't know what final decision will be made concerning a boundary mechanic Stardock will go with if any at all but take the factor unknown into consideration when crafting a roleplaying experience.  By the way, modern settings are usually better for this stuff for a myriad of reasons.

Holy crap, now I wish I'd spent more time recently playtesting this, and less time doing absolutely everything else (like running pen-and-paper games, heh). Probably no way I can get myself in on this one. But I'll officially volunteer, anyway!

And in any case: I'd love to see a transcript of the game, at some point.

Respond here if you’re interested, have the beta, and have time to play.

Yes (though my interest tends to burn out quickly during the game itself), yes, most likely. About the "time  to play" - you see, I live in GMT +03 time zone and I'm also playing three PnP games via the internets at this point of time. But I can always spend time for this if it plays at a speed of, say, one turn per day.

Also, my english kinda sucks, but I doubt you didn't notice it :3

EDIT: I think it's a good idea to add a little about my PnP gaming background, which is not long, but exist nonetheless. So, I started playing about two years, and I played and DMed only DnD (3.5 edition mainly, but lately I have been playing and DMing 4th edition too) and a little of GURPS (so little that we didn't even get through a single battle). When I DMed (sadly, this happened more often than me playing), players praised me for my creativity, which compensated for the lack of balance in most encounters I created. When I played, they most often loathed me for RPing a mad sorcerer, which is my favorite character of all times. Needless to say, he died at least once per every session. Lately I've been trying to actually play some characters other than this one, but I don't really like them, so I'll try to stay true to this archetype then/if I play a Elemental RP.

Hmm, hiring a new wife. That could be fun so long as I could get my current wife to go along with it...lol.

Honestly, I have the best wife in the world. I do spend a lot of time with her of course. We 're on mostly separate schedules so I make it a point to spend a few hours a night with her cuddling and watching movies or TV or something. Aside from that I pretty much do whatever I want. She doesn't mind so long as I press pause for her.
