Steampunk WIP

Updated -- going with Window 2 for the first style (grungy substyle after that).

The start menu is a little incomplete in this shot because the gears and gauges are going to be animation, and I haven't gotten to the animating part just yet (except the start button, which is a gauge that fluctuates on mouseover).

Number 2, the first one looks perhaps a bit too elegant, well to me!!

Great work, Karen!  I agree with everyone else about #2.  It's awesome!!!

the second one...nice work!

I like #2 the best of the two, but I think the window should be consistent with the start menu; that is use the rounded pipe to join the two different elements, and add whatever else to that basic structure.

I'll keep toying around with it -- I wanted the windowframe to be consistent with the start menu, too, but I don't want the functionality of the window to be lost in all that busy-ness.  There needs to be room for the buttons, and the system icon and the titlebar text.  I don't want to suck up 30% of the monitor space with the design, leaving an annoyingly small window to actual function, ya know what I mean?

But I'll keep playing around with it and see if I can get more continuity between the two elements.

I was wondering about that myself, and all I could think of was reducing the width of the "pipes". It's such a nice piece of work that it would be nice to see it all the time, instead of just on the start menu. I really like the rounded corners and the design of the "pipes". In any case, it's going to look good. Are you going to have the whirlygigs "whirl"?

I liked window 2 best, also, but...willistruder is right --- not consistent with the start menu.  So, here's the mockup I have to far.

  Looks good so far, can't wait for this one to be done!

Me likes!

That looks right to me. It was like two skins, either of which would look good, although I prefer the rounded corners much more. I think the corner pieces help a lot, as well. The bar looks a lot better too.

I agree, it didn't go, but I think the reason most people liked #2 was the wood.......not to give You more work or anything.....but what if You added a touch of wood to the start menu, then it wood go! ;) .........like maybe the pannel behind the programs and places lists??? .....once again, just throwing some ideas around.

I liked 2 as well, just a thought.. a little silver mixed in some where, ( you would now best) Steampunk to me, is a mixture of all the metals and wood. :)

I may end up reworking the whole thing -- I've been squeezing in tutorials (a/k/a not concentrating on work like I should -- very bad), developing new skills, getting new ideas, understanding more of what Photoshop can do.  Stay tuned.  This is definitely a work in progress.  It may look nothing like the screenshots to far.

If the wood window was the favorite of most, I could always just add a wood pattern to the start menu, too.

very nice...I wood change your inset hilite blend mode on the places graphic to overlay...that will allow the grain to show thru. :D
