As a citizen of Nevada, I was very pleased to see Tom Dazual lose his seat in the Senate.
I feel that the only reason our Senator Harry Reid got reelected (without a fight) was because most Nevadans was aware of the fact that he may be the next Minority leader.
I was happy at first, because that would mean a Socially Conservative moderate Democrat from my State could be one of the most powerful men in Congress or even in DC. This would be a good sign of Democrats being able to reform their troubled party.
But as I thought more about it. I realize it is most likely not to happen for the following reasons:
1. Terry McCallif is still the DNC Chairman, and as long as he is still in power the nasty tone of the DNC will not go away. Harry Reid is not a man that can project that Nasty tone as well as Kennedy or Paloski can.
2. Reid is a quite man with little malice, he seldom attacks an opponent. Even the few rare times that he has openly said something bad about Bush, it had sounded forced.
3. The most important thing for the Dems now is to keep the Supreme Court out of Republican hands. The courts are the only place where the Dems have any strength left. Bush will uses this election's mandate to place even more conservative Judges on the bench then even before the election. So the abortion issue will be number one. The biggest problem for Reid is that he is Pro-life. I feel that the left-wingers will see this as a threat and railroad someone more radical into the seat.
4. As for point number three above some may say that he may make a promise to hold up the party line on abortion and obstruct those judges as a Devil's bargain for power. But if he did, the people of Nevada would not reelect him to his seat. The man usually has to fight for his seat and even called himself and independent in his ads here.
While I believe Reid would be the best choice to reach across party lines in this much needed rebuilding time for Democrats, I still think there is enough bitterness still in the Democrat party for a more radical person to be placed in that seat.
