From what's been rumoured, it appears that GalCivIII will not be incorporating our beloved Metaverse style system into that game... a shame really, but I wonder if there are designs to introduce such a system into the upcoming nMoM fantasy tbs game.

It would be great fun to have Empire stats for that one... just think of the possibilities!

The new game is planned to have multiplayer, so perhaps the devs consider that a fair replacement for an MV-like scoreboard. But I've so far resisted Impulse and have no idea what it might have by way of infrastructure for a scoreboarding system. And I'm not sure I'd miss it if there is no analog. I've played almost nothing but Meta games since Mumble et al drew me into the MVC and ghostwes founded our venerable little empire, but I'm still regularly uncomfortable when I find myself thinking score first while I'm playing. I know for sure that the only multiplayer stuff I'd ever do with NotMoM would be a cooperative effort to beat computer players on a high difficulty level. I'm a role-player at heart, and I just prefer games that you can't really win and might not have any end other than you deciding it's over.

Am I the only person who dose not really care about this new game. Maybe that will change once some actual info is released.

I'm sure you're not alone in GC2-land--IIRC, a couple of top players have publicly mourned the devotion of dev time to the fantasy game. But I think you're a tad harsh about wanting "some actual info." Scraps have been trickling out for a long while, and if I were a Stardock dev, I'd be a tad nervous about what'll happen once the peanut galleries around here are fed some substantial details. IMO, GC2 is definitely stronger for having gone through its nag-and-update loops, but the process is not very pretty.

Yes, SD betas are awesome.  And you get to give feedback and actually improve the game you just purchased (although full version users get this chance, too, but usually not for as many radical changes/suggestions).

I was thinking about the game last night, and seem to recall reading somewhere from Brad that this game will be an extension of the Gal Civ universe.  I think he said it was going to be based around the history of Altaria (and since Altarians use magic, this would fit in with the info previously).

It's also interesting that all the races are given some history except the Altarians:

Has anyone else read about this?  I don't think I'm making this up...

so, you are essentially making an announcement for an announcement. well, as we say in austria "vorfreude ist die schönste freude".

it definately sounds like my cup of tea, even though I never played MoM. lets see what comes along. I already have a title: Night of Nether: Mysterium of Magic.

The info Vandenburg collected earlier in this thread mentions the Mithrilar, which is an Altarian thing. I don't think it is so much an extension of the GC universe as perhaps a sort of prequel or alternate worlds thing. But I'm probably projecting because I'll be pretty disappointed if the maps are on a spherical planet or planets in star systems that are in galaxies, etc.

"vorfreude ist die schönste freude"

Man, I wish I'd had the discipline to follow through on the baby German I took in college. The free translation there is "anticipation is the most beautiful joy." I could get the "is most beautiful" part, but I had no idea that Sigmund's name was so close to a word for "joy," so all I could guess was "before Freud? most beautiful Freudian slip? what-what?"

I imagine there are plenty of people that don't care about it, but I'd venture a guess that the majority of them would just bypass this thread...

When I was 14 I played WarCraft 2 at my local fantasy club which had a LAN too. I liked playing the campaigns and teaming up against the computer but once I understood the game and became good I enjoyed competetive multiplayer the most.

So if you just became good you'll probably enjoy playing humans more then computers.

If you go to the GalCivII website, click on databanks, and then click on GalCiv Universe, you will find quite an interesting story. Here is a taste or two:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first 3 books outline the Drengin war and introduce readers to the mysterious Arnorians (the Arnor).

The 4th story, Twlight of the Morningstar, tells of the fate of one Arnorian who was helping the humans.  The last two stories deal primarily with the Yor and tie the rest of the stories together, introduce the Iconians and Thalan and resolve the various plot lines.  I won't go into too much detail on those because Galactic Civilizations III will borrow heavily from those particular stories.

Do you play as the Thalan who have come from the an alternative future that exists in the Galactic Civilizations III timeline and snuff out the Terran Alliance before they destroy the universe?

Ironically, this story is told as a story by an Arnorian who is found on an alien world called Altaria.  A cataclysm had occurred and changed all of existence and the dark Mithrilar, called Draginol (that's the source of my on-line handle btw), was also on Altaria.

The second two stories deal with the Altarians trying to resist the evil Draginol and his forces and the aid of Mascrinthus, the last surviving Mithrilar other than Draginol.

The ending of this actually sets in motion the original stories creating a loop.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These little nuggets have been sitting there since I first came across  this game a few years back, and yet we failed to see them, I only saw them when I was trying to figure out who the Xendar were.

your earlier translation was correct anyways. there is no direct tanslation. what are just experiencing, the looking forward to something positive, as in this case the announcement, or for example, christmas and presents or the release of entrenchment. all that is "Vorfreude", it's just a proper word. and there just happens to not exist a similar one in english, which means you sort of write and speak around it.

trust me, there are tons of funny language curiosities once you bother to look. but thats too off topic already, I leave it at that.

ohh, wednesday already. great, I thought I had read "next week". yummy.

Yes.

Not really, I'm sure that there are a lot of people who don't care but those of us who do are fanatics.

When I was 14, AD&D was a new scandal amongst what were soon to be called the "old box" people. I started playing when I was around 15, and pretty much immediately joined up with the faction who wanted story first and game stats second. For players like us, any "getting better" stuff only has value if it makes story sense for the characters we were making. In my favorite table-based RPG experiences, being "good" depended most on knowing about the story the ref was weaving and making sure your character stayed in character, even if that meant "losing points" somehow.

There are probably a lot of people who dont care about the game. However, the nature of this particular thread is to tell those who are interested a "revelation date", thus this thread would primarily attract those who are interested in the game. I'm sure if you searched, you could find people who are not interested, but that might take a while since in my mind people who dont care about the game are not likely to start topics on the subject or participate in forums dedicated to a game they dont really want (unless they are complaining about SD not making GalCiv3 right now or something similar).

I cant say I'm a fanatic waiting for this game to come out, but I am mildly interested if only because it is another turn based civ game I can lose hours playing. Also, I do enjoy a good fantasy universe especially when I can make my own within the context of a larger story such as what SD seems to be trying for here with its supposed customization.

Hrm, shal I drink a case of cough medicine to put myself into a 24hr coma....

Nah, not worth it.  Ya see the price on that stuff now-adays?  That and...um, don't abuse medicine and don't do drugs...

I'm glad I got a busy day tomorow at work, it'll keep me from these boards and wanting to see more info.

Ok, with the announcement of this game, are we going to get a hint of the required specs.  I'm honestly waiting on my next laptop purchase to make sure the new laptop runs this like a charm.

I'm confident my old one should run it, but I want a new one to run it well at work.

Huzzah! Finally an official announcement.

If you aren't excited now about this game, then you should be. The idea behind this game has been simmering in Frogboy's mind for years. There are bits and pieces that were coded for other projects that will just now be implemented. I believe that this will be Stardock's masterpiece.

This is a wet dream come true. Can't wait to read lots of info about the coming game. (Brad...that was a hint for you. Lots of info, ok!! ;) )

Oh I would not worry to much on how the game will look. If Galciv is any indication not-mom will just be gorgeous.

It's strange that we are all so confident that this game will be good. I think it's because we all love Stardock and have confidence in Brad.

So can we expect the annoncement at 12h01 am

And we already know from the previous dev snippits that the engine for the Not-MoM started up in 2007, if my memory serves :P

What good timing... after 15 years of playing it regularly, I am actually starting to get bored of playing Master of Magic.  I really hope this will be released soon.

Is it me or did they just changed the date on us?

Now it seems it's going to be November 4th and not tomorrow. Yesterday I thought they had ment tomorrow October 29th.

Oh well the anticipation will be even bigger!
