So, What Are You In For?

So, What Are You In For?

Which customizing app got you hooked and why?

I'm just curious: Which customizing program got you into it all? Which one is your fave, and why?

For me, it was ObjectDock. And I have to admit, it was about the time that Mac OS X Leopard came out. (Don't crucify me! 8O ) I was so intrigued with Leopard that I began looking into Windows dock programs. The rest is history...

I have since come to the realization that my infatuation with Leopard was all cosmetic. I still love Windows, and I love it more with OD+!

Then it was all downhill from there. I decided to get the Object Desktop package. I began using WindowBlinds, RightClick, IconPackager, Desktop X, and now Fences! Will it ever stop?!?! I hope not! XD

OD+ is still my fave, but I gotta admit: I'm hooked on it all!

How 'bout you... ?

I started out with Windowblinds, then once i got a hold of Objectdock plus, i thought i hit the mother lode, then for the heck of it one day, i installed MyColors, and havent looked back, i purchased almost every one of mycolors themes, (exception of NCAA, just the Boston College one and the Boston Celtics) now i spend more time changing themes, and matching the colors of the theme with my docks, i swear at this point i am constantly changing things all the time, maybe, just maybe i have too much free time on my hands LOL

I've just realised that my sentence will be up as of January 09.  Bah, they're not gonna get rid of me that easily.  No siree, I'm gonna bribe of of the guards with $69.95 to have my sentence extended for another year... and if they're not gonna give me a life sentence, I'll happily cough up the cash annually to ensure I never have to leave.

Besides, I've decorated my cell to my liking - with a great set of Windowblinds so's nobody can peer in, a dock to keep all my personal stuff tidy, and a weather thingumygig so's I know what the weather's like outside - so it's like home to me now and, with the planned prison upgrades, I ain't never leavin'.

Being a "Program junkie:dur: and using computers since 1984, it's hard to say what started me down this long, winding road to customization.  I too went the route of alternate shell programs. (Litestep, bbLean, Talisman, Aston) A freeware program, PowerPro, let me make toolbars, menus and lots of other stuff (and I still use it for macros, menus, alarms, hotkeys and stuff) but my taskbar and windows were still Boring!  Then I got stuck on StyleXP for the longest time and I thought I was happy. :(O

When I got my NEW computer, it had Vista, which StyleXP didn't work on, so I searched for an alternative and recently (June, 2008) found Windowblinds.  I've since purchased ObjectDesktop Ultimate and OD plus.  I go through WC everyday (sometimes more than once!) and get more skins, dreams, widgets etc.  I've made one widget and uploaded some Walls.

It's taken over my life! (and I love every minute of it!)

Basically...I came across a site called TweakXp http://www.tweakxp.com/ which had a link to this thing called WindowBlinds. After I saw what it did I just bought the whole package along of course with ObjectDock & CursorXp and the rest is history,

Rule Of The Yard:  Never ask a convict what he did, you're suppose to ask him what did those SOB's accuse you of?

If you want to be his friend that is!

On a personal note, I had another worthless Public Defender!

Um, like I'm worried about a possible mass breakout, being somebody posted a link to a fancy shmancy, new fangled, freebie ObjectDock alternative.....see here https://forums.wincustomize.com/324305

I therefore recommend that all of you who never want to be released keep a vigilant eye out for any inmate who appears to be getting itchy feet and wanting an out.  If need be, call the guards and have them put in shackles... even a dose of solitary until they come to their senses.  Stardock is the Stalag 13 of the internet... there has never been a successful escape, and we are duty bound to ensure none of our fellow inmates even attempt an escape.

Yeah, I got asked that!  I told him that they accused me of desktop customisation addiction, defacing default Windows GUI's and having a concealed dock... then he asked how do I plead, I said: "Guilty as charged"

Well...for me it started out stumbling upon LiteStep, then I found Beatnik, Coolpad and a few other little things like that. As my addiction grew..I had to have more. I couldn't stop. It consumed my life....somehow 7 years ago I stumbled upon this little fledgling website call Wincustomize. I saw what they had to offer so I tried out this Windowblinds thingy. It worked pretty cool, I liked what it could do. Then I saw this thing called Desktop X. hmmmmm, I said. How bad can I screw up my system with this. Tried it out....Wow, I can really screw with people's heads with this. After DX, it was OD, then all the others. After this, my friends and family new I had a problem, They looked for that magic "800" number (you know, like the one you find on the back of scratch lottery tickets". Well, they couldn't find one so they called in some outside professional help. The pro's took one look at me and had me committed to a life long sentence in rehab to recover from this addiction. My body is trying to recover, but my mind won't let it. So just to mess with myself...I come here everyday. I refuse to recover. I'm now permanently committed to the WC looney bin.

Damn you people here! Why do you have to make everything so incredible and be so nice and funny all the time.

I just realised, I've been doing this for about 10 years!!! I started out just changing wallpapers on Windows 95 and getting skins for winamp. Then I discovered Litestep and got involved with that and started making themes for it. Then I discovered WindowBlinds and Desktop X  and all the other goodies. I haven't made anything for DX for a while, but I think I'm still No.2 in the downloads list for DX themes. Amazing!!

I'm in for life I reckon, and the people at Stardock are just the best you will find anywhere, so I don't want to get paroled thanks........ B[]

For me it was Obect Dock..  Then it was all down hill from there.  I am just happy to be a part of this site and all the great people here..  :bebi:

Did computer science Saturday arvos at BIT, Bendigo while at Secondary school fortan, cobol etc then later on at Uni doing Vet Med I sneaked in to lectures for Comp Sci and learnt how to colour DOS prompt and background like on TV. Then via StyleXP, till their downloads had more than I wanted, to here CM, SDC and now Impulse with tons of goodies and a fair few games too.

Yeah, I reckon they're the best, too... and since agreeing to scrapping the early release/parole program, they're even betterer than best.  And BoXXi, you have no worries about ever getting paroled... er, that's been scrapped... um released.  You are a repeat offender, and without remorse, so your sentence is for the term of your natural life... never to be released.  Happy Now???

And yeah, it's great to see you popping in again... here's hoping all is well for you and your family. :)

No worries, mate... that parole businesss can be a real worry, so I asked 'em to scrap it for our peace of mind.  I mean, we should have some tenure and security after going to great effort to customise our cells with elegant Windowblinds and the like.

Oh well, now that we've got paroles out of the way, I think conjugal visits should be next on the agenda with prison management. ;P

Hey BoXXi, what was it that those SOB's accused you of?

hmmmm........first customization goes back to the days of DOS . I used to get specialized drivers for my video cards to work with AutoCAD. The drivers let you change fonts, colors, menus and create floating, iconic menus......sound familiar?

Most of those Video Card companies have disappeared now....STB, Oak Tech, Boca Research, Diamond, Orchid, Hercules.............

Once Windows caught on I went to Norton Desktop to get some added "customization"

Eventually got around to updating to XP and did some web searching to come up with Windowblinds and StyleXP....tried both and quickly realized Windowblinds for the better product....purchsed Windowblinds stand alone in January of 2001, Object Desktop 3 or 4 months later......

Hey BoXXi, what was it that those SOB's accused you of?

Regular and persistent skinning in the first degree... carries a honorary Hotel California sentence.  Now he's booked in he can never leave... but then BoXXi was never one for half measures.

Whoa! I guess customization has been around longer than I thought!

Sorry, cp! BTW- what did they accuse you of? XD

What hasn't he been accused is more like it!!!!  Cp has done everything from taking a great bunch of skins and assembling them in such a manner they create sensational screenshots, to making bold and bodacious comments on other peoples work. I mean, just take a look in the screenies gallery and you'll see he has a rap sheet as long as yer arm... probably longer.

In fact, when prison management runs out of sigle letters to name new cell blocks - like A and B, etc - I reckon they should name one CP in his honour, so great are his contributions and service to the cause

Also, I reckon the recreation area should be renamed the 'Po and Skinhit Wing'... and the infirmary the 'DrJo Wing'... and the prison library after Jafo, with a sci.fi section named after our resident Vulcan, Fuzzy Logic.

And let us not forget "Jeff Bargaman Hall," for he hath given us so many of these great apps!

I saw screenshots of litestep, and when I went digging into what exactly it was, I found geoShell. (The old, true geoShell. Not the outdated, seldom updated, patchwork mess you'll find today) Then I started developing for it, worked with one of the guys on getting skinning going in it and then started working on my own skinnable apps. From there I was pretty much sucked in. Kapsules followed and now my employment with the company that haunts your dreams with visions of titlebars and pushbuttons.

Oh, I shouldnt forget Mac Vision, which lead to litestep. Jeff was 14 then

Precisely... we shall now refer to the prison workshop gallery as the "Jeff Bargaman Hall"

And we can't forget our great founder, Brad Wardell.... the swimming pool shall henceforth be adorned with lily pads and be named "Frog's Pond"

Oh, and we can't forget the contributions of Neil Banfield.... therefore I propose we name the skylights in the Jafo library the "Banfield Wndows"  Orright, they're not 'exactly' windows - and they'd sure look better without the security bars - but they are certainly more aesthetically pleasing to the eye thanks to his WindowBlinds.

Ooops, I almost forgot Zubaz for his Zubish contribution - the code we use when we don't want prison management knowing what we're talking about.  I'm not too sure what to name in his honour, tho... perhaps a Zubish dictionary that new inmates can keep under their bunk mattresses to give 'em a 'heads up' on prison-speak.
