ObjectDock Alternative!??!

Well, I dunno if anyone has seen this, but someone has created a circular dock that is (IMHO) pretty friggin cool.  It's based off the windows seven dock, it spins and rotates, and is fully customizable with circular skins, all icons can easily be changed, it has a sort of "category" feature kinda like DellDock, where you can add a folder, then put shortcuts or files in it, and when you click on it, the folder goes to the center of the dock, and its contents open around it.  I just started messing around with it about an hour ago, I provided a link to the site where there are some really cool demonstration videos.  Don't get me wrong though, This is not an OD Replacement, nothing could ever take its place, :smitten:   LoL, but it is something new and fun to play with, has a lot of different features, at least worth checking out the vids, and I dare you to not download it and spin it on your screen!*_*   I'm watching.....

I've checked out that thing the previous month. Back then, my opinion was:

  • Requires .Net 3 or 3.5 Framework to work like it's advertised ;P
  • Options Menu was buggy and slow #:(
  • Options Menu stopped responding :annoyed:
  • Options Meny didn't really work either :thumbsdown:
  • When you download the dock, it's a 7 MB .zip file. Most of the app takes only a fraction of the space when extracted  XO
  • The rest of the space is taken up by icons ripped off from the default icon set that comes with Rocket Dock :typo:

I'm not saying I hate it. Just doesn't work though, does it? :hrmph:

Seems like it's been updated....so now:

  • Requires only .Net Framework 2
  • New Options Menu
  • Real Time Changes

I imagine a few will give it a spin, but you are preaching to the ObjectDock faithful... and ObjectDock Plus users will take some swaying, given its current and upcoming features.

Me?  Well I'm a sucker for new toys, so I'll give it a twirl or three to see how it measures up.. :)

I gave this a run, and I'm fairly impressed so far.

Worked well on my Vista Ultimate machine, and was a cinch to learn in seconds.

Considering its stll in its apha stage, I think it has some great potential as an enhancement to objectdock. Making a skin or 'ring' for it should be a snap to most here, and it's already highly customizable.

All in all, I quite like it.

I think I might try my hand at making a few of my own skins for it.

It'll never replace my beloved ObjectDock Plus though....

Well, tried it and while it's in alpha it might have some possibilities, but at this stage I prfer OD.

I'd really like to see some response from SD about the "fly out" feature that SeaBass has forwarded to them. There're lots of posts addressing this and the "Dell Dock".

I know that SD isn't M$ sized, but I'd love to hear they're planning something like that option if it doesn't violate some clause in the Dell contract.

All in all, SD is very responsive: Dreamscape 2.5 (for XP) is a perfect example of this.

While it's hard, I'm going to exercise patience and see what develops from SD. :-"

I hope this thing is sizeable, it looks like it takes up a huge chunk of desktop...I'm going to give it a whirl (no pun intended) when I get on my home rig.  Just because I like to see how the others stack up against my baby.  Don't tell her.

This is definitely not an OD replacement, just something new to try out.  Like Erk said, maybe a good enhancement to run alongside OD.  I'm with Starkers, I saw a new toy and just had to give it a spin.  LoL.  Thought it be neice to share, glad a few ppl checked it out, there will be an updated version released on Sunday.  And, yes Messiah, the dock and icons are resizable.

If it's resizable, it'a a maybe. My problem with a lot of these is the icons. This is one reason I love OD, because of the png's. Some software comes with some really ugly freakin icons and it's a pain to have open the properties, etc., etc., and change each one..especially if you have to go and make them first. PNG's resize much better, as well.

 

Yahoo widgets has a 'space saving' dock that I love. If I could code, I would make one for DX. Hell, I'd make several. It's something, if I could code the icon/toggle/rotation, I could make skins to match blinds for.

Yes, and it is really easy.  It has a nice "icon replacement" system where you just drag and drop the icon on top of the file you want to change.  I wish I were more artistically inclined, I'd like to have a couple varations of docks for this from OD.  There are only 3 that come with it, those are easily changed too.

I thought that was odd. There are others but they are all 'square'. I think you could make the png's and then you would have to look at the '.ini. files. Unless I am wrong, that is where you would find all the info to apply any new images. messiah or maybe web-gizmo would be able to figure that part out.

I'm not certain what the time frame is in this reagard with 'dock updates'. However I am moving suggestions along and the developers are active in these channels. They don't go unnoticed. I do have to say that this dock looks like the tablet menu that toshiba did many moons ago. Like then I wonder at this one that is nice, but where do I put it?

I don't think I am being bias when I say that the current dock choices out there are like Object Dock in that they fit to a square framed monitor and function well, rather than look pretty. Thankfully Object Dock can do both. I haven't tried it yet, that is just a visual and practical observation. I will have to check it out.

Those others are backgrounds for RocketDock...odd that they are included in this Circle Dock package.  I really like the icon replacement feature where you just drag the new icon on top of the old one.  Very easy.  Overall, it's pretty cool, looks like it's easily skinnable but I'll stick with ObjectDock as my main dock and maybe after a bit make a few skins for this just 'cause I can. :d

Other than going to the link I haven't really looked at this.

ObjectDock Plus really gives me currently all I need.  It would have been nice if thier home page had more screenshots to show.  I didn't see anything that said you could set it off screen when not in use.

Best thing apart from the eye catching swirly feature, is definitely the icon replacement. Come on Stardock!! Sort it out lol. Can we please see this as a high priority in the next release? It would make everything so much easier :)

I didn't see anything that said you could set it off screen when not in use.

After a few moments of inactivity, it disappears on it's own.  Then you just put your mouse to the left or right of the screen and it'll come back.  You can also do that to make it disappear.

Po, There is an option in the settings to set the rotation, mine spins with my center mouse button.  The Square backgrounds are for a future release that will have docks like OD and square shaped docks, just haven't been implemented at this time.  The icon replacement feature is my favorite.  Also, if you right click on the dock and add a dock folder, then click on it, it opens an empty ring where you can add more files, kinda like a category.  Then you click on the center icon to get back to the main ring.  messiah, I'm not sure why yet, but it isn't set to be a permanent fixture on the desktop, only appears when clicking center mouse wheel, or setting a hot key command.  It'll be nice when it does, then I can leave it in the lower left bottom corner of my screen and use it for shortcuts and start menu.  Someone did put up 3 other backgrounds to share here, http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=14881.new#new .  If you get around to making some circle docks mind sharing them??  I'd like to see what you come up with, some glass would be nice!  Is there still an active suggestions thread for the updated OD 2.0, I have one suggestion I'd really like to see.
