Demigod - Beta 1 getting closer...

Current Date is September 5th

The first beta of Demigod is looking to be on September 5th.  We wanted to do it at the end ofAugust but we're all going to be attending PAXX (Penny Arcade trade show) that week and we want to be here to help people get started.

Now, just so you know, the first beta we are intentionally removing a lot of gameplay elements just so that we can get people to focus on compatibility and performance.  We want this game to be about twice the performance as Supreme Commander had (a LOT of work has gone into lowering the hardware requirements).  Multiplayer in the initial beta will be LAN only but you'll be able to play against an AI player.

Once we have all that nailed down, we can add the actual gameplay elements, broaden the multiplayer, and go from there.

So we can use Hamachi?

OpenVPN and tinc as well but haven't tried either so can't comment.

OpenVPN is awesome, but a little hard to setup.
Compared to Hamachi it's a bunch of technical mumbojumbo.

But if I remember correctly it doesn't float past firewalls like Hamachi does.

Well I was under the impression people were getting some "hate on" towards hamachi so was just suggesting some others in case. I haven't had problems with hamachi in the past though.

Did anyone answer to the question regarding playing with friends that haven't preordered ?

I reckon we will create some open/hamachi/etc. groups. Can't wait to try it out. Can't wait....

Does anybody own a pro account in hamachi?
I think there has been a limit in the group size for those peopel, who doesn´t have one.

If its LAN only and (single player vs 1 AI) is it able to be used over hamatchi? hamatchi is a virtual private network (VPN) freeware application that simulates a LAN environment and allows people to connect to it who are online anywhere.

oops missed the one hamatchi post above, my bad :NOTSURE:

also hi to technoViking from OCF if I recall correctly :D

Question, can we play LAN with friends (cause I have some friends who are iffy about the game)This option would allow for more systems to be tested (10 people trying it, as opposed to one) and would be free advertising, it should be simple to create a spawn version that you allow beta key members to install on many computers that can only join games of full key members... though actually that could be open for abuse....

That would be cool but I highly doubt they will do that.

When the date gets closer Someone will post a Hamachi group or something that we can all join and we can chat using the Demigod IRC to set things up. I know TAG won;t have problems finding people to play with.

Regarding whether or not it's a good idea to remove gameplay elements: yes, it is.

If you want to test a specific thing, you eliminate as many variables as you can to make sure that tracking down the cause of issues is easier and faster.

Beta 1 is meant to be an engine stress test - up till now they've really only been running it on the SD and GPG PC's, now it's going to be opened up to everyone's PC configs and this phase is going to be focused on making sure the engine is stable. That's why the gameplay elements come second.

Hey I remember hearing about Demigod being at PAX and that it was playable? can anyone confirm that? Because I live in the area and might show up if it is... that and the fact that there will be plenty of other developers there. (Oh and what would be the best day do you think)

Make sure you take a cam with you  ;)
Well it depends if I can get some one to drive me, and I can barrow a cam, that and if they even allow it to be taped, but if I can I will!

LAN spawn copy is an interesting idea, though I doubt they will do it, want it tested not dissected. ;)

Though actually, they could tie the spawn copy directly to your beta account...

probably will replace the leaver's demigod with a comp player so it doesnt actually leave most likely on hard setting or whatever is the highest so it wont be easy

I'm pretty sure someone from GPG posted that it will be playable at PAX. It should be in one of the more recent dev journals, if memory serves.

1) Nobody knows for sure, but I expect the forums will be the primary means of communicating these things.

2) Generally Stardock licenses a copy to 2 computers, but who knows if they'll hold the beta under a EULA like that.

3) There won't be an NDA for the pre-order beta, the forums won't be locked to beta testers only, etc, so nobody should have a problem with it. Again, going from past experience - in Sins we had a guy who made publicly available high quality videos of each beta stage :)

He pre-ordered , but is playing EVE atm...

I want Multi here, now now now now now!

Or I'm going to unleash Eets on him!

Last I talked to Multi, he didn't even know about the tentative DG schedule or anything. Don't think he even checks the forums. He'll probably play the beta since he'll get the e-mail and all, but I don't know if he'll be a hardcore tester like Sins. I think he's addicted to EVE too much.
