Demigod - Beta 1 getting closer...

Current Date is September 5th

The first beta of Demigod is looking to be on September 5th.  We wanted to do it at the end ofAugust but we're all going to be attending PAXX (Penny Arcade trade show) that week and we want to be here to help people get started.

Now, just so you know, the first beta we are intentionally removing a lot of gameplay elements just so that we can get people to focus on compatibility and performance.  We want this game to be about twice the performance as Supreme Commander had (a LOT of work has gone into lowering the hardware requirements).  Multiplayer in the initial beta will be LAN only but you'll be able to play against an AI player.

Once we have all that nailed down, we can add the actual gameplay elements, broaden the multiplayer, and go from there.

No Impulse multiplayer makes me sad, but dedication towards good performance makes me very happy :).

What AZ said. Everyone using weird multiplayer programs until the real thing is useable will be sad too :(

"weird multiplayer programs"
Then I´m looking forward to the next beta phase for more multiplayer action ^^

Will it be possible to play on LAN against other players?

Yes.

Will we be able to play over the Internet using Hamachi?

Plantgirl, yes you will, otherwise why would you be in a LAN?

I wonder what twice the performance means? does it mean 1 core is enough now for what have needed 2 cores in an unoptimized supcom engine?

Yeah, I suspect that's what they mean. You'll need half the clock cycles, roughly speaking. It will probably run well enough on a single core in that case.

Thankyou thankyou thankyou for the lovely AI option. So tired of betas leaving that out. "Learning" against experienced opponents sucks out what little fun might exist in the testing process. :)

September 5th sounds good. I'll play it in between playing Spore! :D

I wonder how advanced the AI will be at this stage :P It's a shame that it's starting so late as everything starts back up again in September.. Ah well, i'm sure i will find some time *cough* :D :D

were gonna need a hamachi server and most 1 core comps can play supcom so definately this 2 i only have 2.4ghz 2gb ram and geforce 7800 gtx and i can play supcom to at least 4vs4 without lagging until mid-game of course but if u have specs anywhere near mine u can handle it and my specs are low nowadays

without the possibility to pay with paypal there will be no beta for me :'( *sniff*

2.4GHz single core, and you play 4v4s on SupCom? My god, I feel sorry for whoever has to play with you.

As for the lowered requirements, this is obviously very good news, but remember that this is min reqs. and there's no guarantee that on a higher end system you'll notice a difference.

Sept 5th is that just an estimate this time around or can we count on this being a solid date?

Will your single player campaign be playable or just skirmishes against the AI?

I'm not sure how far along the AI will be.  The GPG AI team is pretty good and I'll be working with them on the AI as well.

All dates are always estimates. :)

The first beta isn't going to be "fun". It's explicitly designed to be NOT fun so that we can get people to focus on performance and compatibility. It'll just be LAN skirmishes with AI players allowed.

Question, can we play LAN with friends (cause I have some friends who are iffy about the game)
This option would allow for more systems to be tested (10 people trying it, as opposed to one) and would be free advertising, it should be simple to create a spawn version that you allow beta key members to install on many computers that can only join games of full key members... though actually that could be open for abuse....

I second Mooey's motion, if there is no internet multiplayer at this stage, can we have access to LAN spawns with only one beta key?

Also, will there be direct IP available?

Just as side note apparently:

http://natnix.com/index.html is better than hamachi.

http://wippien.com Is another alternative to hamachi as well, I've tried wippien still has problems with 64bit OS though I think.

OpenVPN and tinc as well but haven't tried either so can't comment.

Great news, although I just have a question about installing it on other computers: Will I have a downloaded EXE file that I can just run on each computer, or will I have to install Impulse and have that read some encrypted file for the install on each of the machines?

Can't wait.

Plus side, I'll be back at college at that point, where I can rope in some like-minded friends. >.>

This brings up an interesting question, will you get more beta results by making the game less fun to play or would you have gotten more results by making it fun enough to keep peoples attention? When people are tempted with other games such as spore and things like school its even less likely for them to spend hours testing a game that isn't enjoyable to test. I'm a software engineer and I realize software isn't "fun" to test but games can be different where application software can't :P

I'm currently in C&C3 beta and its basically the FULL game and still the amount of players playing it isn't huge. So I can't imagine who would be playing the C&C beta if it wasn't the full version or if they intentionally took out features that are done, just to make sure the game isn't fun.
