Twilight Feedback! Let us have it!

Twilight Feedback! Let us have it!

We're going to do an update this week

Greetings!

We hope you're enjoying Twilight of the Arnor. We had a great time working on it.

The digital distribution portion of Twilight is a real challenge versus what we've done in the past. With most games, we have an actual CD or DVD to work from.  Here, we're putting thousands of different files on various servers.

So what we plan to do this week (probably tomorrow) is do a minor cleaning house update on anything that might have gotten "left behind".  I saw someone mention that the Altarian tech tree has a "todo" description for instance.  We also will put in some code to clean up some of the settings for those who ran the beta (if you can't make custom opponents, there's your cause - delete the directory my documents\my games\gc2twilight and you should be set).

So use this thread to tell us anything you saw that you think needs to be tweaked or that we may have missed and we should be able to resolve it tomorrow as it's just a matter of putting the files on the server.  For anyone who runs into that, we apologize for any inconvenience.

Anyone else getting a slight popping noise (like a vinyl record with scratches) after pressing the turn button?

The description of the Krynn counter-espionage tech has several typo's in it.

The drath got healing pools, which seriously seems as a filler. Since it has no connection/lore with the drath + the drath already has got their temples.

Also, it would be very nice, if you put your miners on automate, they will upgrade mining stations automatically. Which they dont atm :)

They do but there is a bug connected to it :)
If they have nothing to do they go into standby , but once you research Space Mining they do not wake up, you have manually "stop auto" to make them tick again.

I am playing my first ToA game as Terran: medium map, 5 opponents, crippling.

1) I am also experiencing CTD when minimizing GalCiv window. (see Kiaren's post).

2) Some new automatic designs allow me to build ships that I normally would not be able to build due to limits of miniaturization. When trying to update the designs I am told that the ship uses. e.g. 60 spaces out of 40. The designs also include non-functional components some of which should not available (e.g. plasma weapons when my highest level beam weapon is laser). This can be confusing. For instance, I updated terran basic colony ship and deleted one (of the two) colony modules only to discover that the ship cannot colonize anything ( the other module was non-functional).

3) An AI colony ship is stuck to a corner of the map. I am not certain whether this is a real or bogus ship (have not tried to move into its space)

4) Number of issues that relate to game play but I am not sure whether they are bugs or features. For instance, trade routes appear to provide exactly the same amount regardless of the position of the minifreighter.

5) Personally, I would prefer that the AI did not trade its unique techs (so easily). I very much like the new tech-trees and the resulting uniqueness of each race. However, the willingness of AIs to trade their * techs sort of counteracts it - in the end everyone is still very similar.

P.S. ToA is definitely a great addition to Gal Civ II. Especially, the unique techs-trees, contextual help and new graphics rock! Thanks a lot Stardock!

Great game. Very stable on my machine, which is far from the speediest or most advanced. That being said, I have a couple of less positive observations.

First, the Torians now seem a bit overpowered. In every game I've tried, they quickly colonize the most planets (by far) and field the most powerful military.

The surrender mechanism still seems a bit off kilter. The AI seem to surrender when there isn't really good reason to do so. Moreover, they tend to surrender such that power becomes concentrated in the hands of the empire that already is dominating rather than surrendering to another that might restore balance. In my last game, this meant the Torians, who already had far more planets than anyone else, suddenly added the Thalans and the Yor to their empire in a single turn. Very little hope for any other empire to hold out at that point.

Oh, I noticed some of the special new buildings like the arcanean navigation centers miss a description of what the exact bonus it gives. It would be nice to be able to see how much speed increase the ships get.

I saw the same problem with overpowered Torians. In every game I played (also in the betas) they "win" the colony rush and had the largest empire.

Hmmmm - interesting observations!

About;
2- I really do believe the Ship_Design_Focus option will eventually become centralistic to any Macman enhancing feature in this game. All or any upgrades to this essential tool should be given high priority by SD. It's a rather tough intuitive undertaking to say the least - cuz it would involve player's choice and/or pre-defined deterministic needs as it also relates to;
a) What tech level has been reached in numerous areas,
b) Which preferences could be made common or relative to emergency design switching,
c) Restrictions applied (or not, btw) to certain Hull-types or categories when & then upon selection by the player.
d) And, plenty more possibilities.

About;
3- This has been known to me for a long time and i never cared much about asking why here. I suspect this 'idled_ship' is a code loop indirect tapper of map conditions devised by the coders as either, a bug trap, or a calculated risk toward monitoring specific gameplay issues. But, that's my guess only. It may prove to be just a simple glitch. All i know is that the thingy isn't selectable, my ships could simply go on that tile and share the location with an indirect 'invisible' ship, etc. It's there. Bof - for some unclear reasons. Doesn't interfere with my games though.

About;
5-Nope, it is sooooooo funny & weird that i find the extra-element of back&forth distribution of almost exclusive stuff a welcomed challenging situation. There are, in fact, some untradable items... but, in these cases it actually makes much more sense.

Sooooo, all things being said - i figure the complexity introduced by the multiple trees is the core feature which may keep us all busy for a loooooong time. And with the editors we can always inspect values to satisfy our curiosity. Kudos to SD for daring that much, btw.
;)

Oh, forgot to mention a suggestion for the Focus_AI_ShipDesigner;

- What is really missing is an Acknowledge_Approval sort of button once we receive the "new ship is available" regular (but sometimes, annoyingly consecutive... for useless upgrades) warning(s).

- I activated the option only to realize that the duty & tasks was getting outa control and filling up my ship lists with plenty to delete. So, turned it off. BUT, it could be a lot more useful since it would have lots of potential once re-re-thought about for optimal settings and/or features.

Interesting. In my game the Torians failed the colony rush miserably. They only control their home system and one low quality planet. The others control at least twice as many. Maybe they just had very bad starting position. (The home system is in a corner)

I mean: Torians may have had a bad starting position. (For some reason I cannot edit my post)

OK, the launcher widget doesn't show up on my start menu. Just seems like since I went through the install routine, the installer would have put those items on the Stardock Games Menu for me.  :d

Oops, I was replying to this mesage when I said that it just seems like running the installer would put the various editors into the menu automatically. Didn't for me.

If you don't like using the launcher widget, all of the Editor tools are located here:C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\Twilight\ToolsAnd are called:GC2MapEditor.exeGC2ScenarioEditor.exeGC2CampaignEditor.exeGC2TechTreeEditor.exeGC2ShipComponentEditor.exeGC2ImprovementEditor.exeJust go there, find the appropriate program you want, and create a shortcut (or six!) on your Desktop or in your Start Menu.-HM

Once you install the game, the only thing it will put in the Start Menu is the shortcut to the launcher (TALaunch.exe).

Hey, I'm new fairly new to the gal civ universe but i really like the new expansion. However I get random CTD's after the first couple of turns of a custom game, but if I get past five turns it goes just fine. I'm playing in a window. Also if i leave the game running while the laptop goes to sleep, when it comes back I get a fatal error message window something about missing cell. Also i think that there might be a balance issue with the Krynn, cause if i put them in, they are ALWAYS the major race, even with more aggresive races present. And I've never seen the AI use the spore ship.

First, I want to publicly thank Travis in Tech support for helping me with my SDC issue. It was an on-going annoying problem, and he fixed it once and for all!

Here are some minor issues:

The first line of various screens is hard to read. On my computer it shows up as yellow text against a white background.

This occures on the screens that pop up the first time you colonize a planet, investigate an anomoly, and the random events.

The "volocano" random event.

The "good" option ("save all of the people regardless of the cost"), only cost 106bc but the "neutral" option ("try your best to save as many people as you can, but don't strain yourself")cost 496bc and you loose 100 million citizens. Shouldn't the cost be reversed?

Usually the "good" option is more expensive than the "neutral" option.

I'm only part of the way through the game, but I think it's great!

Just a few things that I would like to request at this time, mainly all having to do with starbases.

Would it be possible to make a tag that causes two starbase components to be exclusive, like you have done with the various attack upgrades and defense upgrades available to ships? It would allow us to make components for starbases (ie, mining components for Drengin, Yor, etc) that cannot be mixed with those available to normal races.

Secondly, is there a tag that lets us use components to add hit points to a starbase? The larger ships can easily outclass starbases, and a way to help reverse this issue with components would be appreciated.

The only real feedback I can offer at this point is its a shame not all improvement icons got the makeover (the Spaceport being the most obvious offender - I know its been confirmed it will be "updated" eventually I hope).

Same goes for the textures. The new ones are so nice compared to the old ones, hope some time is devoted to spiffing up the rest of the old textures. ;)

Yep. I seem to be having this one in my current game.
Reply #70 Top
I'm not sure if this is feedback per se, but why exactly has research become so cripplingly slow?
Reply #71 Top
The Drath tech tree still has healing pools. and the divergent evolution building looks too much like the Toian transport thing and is pretty weak.
Reply #72 Top
I don't know if this has been mentioned but creating a fleet with a ship and a terror star causes a crash to the desktop. Are you supposed to be able to create fleets with terror stars for escort? I.E. is this a designed feature of the game or does Stardock not want us to be able to fleet with terror stars?

Actually, when I installed (updated) the game through SDC, the only thing it put was a shortcut to TwilightoftheArnor.exe, not the TALauncher, which was where I was getting confused.

Once you install the game, the only thing it will put in the Start Menu is the shortcut to the launcher (TALaunch.exe).-HM

I got a CTD on full screen due to Windows defender running at it's regular scheduled time.

I figured no matter and switched to window running as I usually do anyway. The only minor problem is that the 1280X1024 screen runs just a tad to the left and this cause the game mouse pointer to be off just enough to aggravate me.

I noticed this the other day, when you have the options set so that you are prompted if you want to build a starbase over a galactic resource the prompt appears twice (you accept the first time, then the prompt will reappear for a second time and after you accept there its fine).

Small bug there methinks. :)
