Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Gephardt's shrewd pick of Hillary as his VP and excellent late game ads nearly completely disrupted my New York Republican strategy (I love playing a candidate from a key opposing state and robbing the enemy of electoral votes). I won only because of an overwhelming victory in California.

Look how important Gephardt made More Jobs and Senior Prescriptions by the end. All my work on Iraq and the War on Terror was lost when he made the job issues key late in the game.

I don't have a screen shot, because I'm supposed to be at work, working but anyways, I did the normal thing and my first game was Kerry v. Bush. I took
Kerry being a Dem, and too be honest I think it played very close to the real way it could turn out. He of course raised tons more money than I did, fought
me very hard in California (which actually surprised me) and took all of the South, except NC. Anyway the thing I thought ironic was that on
election night, Kerry won the electoral vote, but Bush won the popular vote. I think that would be a form of justice if it truly played out that way on November 2.
Also found that using political capital was very important and the AI didn't do it very well.

Year 1 of Campaign Mode, wherein Bush opened up a jumbo-sized can of whup-ass on poor old Wesley Clarke!

Now, who were you playing???

I can't figure out how to save screen shots to paste them here, but I will transcribe the results:

I ran on a Democratic ticket - my created candidate with Bill Clinton as running mate against Ulysses Grant and his running mate Dick Cheney. This was in campaign mode on "tough" difficulty. The final vote tally had me with 96,984,000 total votes (compared to 58,448,000 for Grant) and all 538 electoral votes. In terms of exit polling, I dominated every issue on the board. The highest percentage that Grant scored on any of the major issues was a 9% on Homeland Security. The single most important issue was The War on Terror (held by 20% of the electorate), and I was supported on that issue by 95% of the voters.

The point is, I found a pretty easy way to win. Basically, just set up shop in one state. Invest in political capital and try to "purchase" as many webmasters as you can (they lower advertising maintenance costs) and place them all in the same state. If you get enough of them (in this case, I had about 5), when you issue a national television advertisement, you will actually end up MAKING money on the maintenance. It will actually list a negative number as the maintenance cost. Thus, you can just keep making more and more national ads every turn because with every new ad, your money is constantly increasing every turn. Of course, the more national ads you make (I will make one that says I support something universally acceptable like war on terror, environment, etc. and a complementary one that says my opponent opposes the same issue) the more the voters tend to agree with your candidate nationally - you don't even have to visit a single state. Yeah, I know this is pretty cheap, but it makes getting through the "campaign mode" a breeze. Of course, that is until the computer starts employing "fixers" who would pose an huge threat to my cheap gameplan. But, so far they have not.
You are essentially just cheating.
I hope they fix this. Cause I'm getting beat so bad I may have to ep,oy this awful technique.
Man that technique is cheap and it takes the fun away from the game.

I make a horrible republican, I went with Rice (but she is sooooo cute)/Arnuuuuld I got my butt handed to me with 401 electoral votes for Gore. What killed me was the endorsement from the fire arms people. That and I didn't know how to fly to another state for like 6 rounds. There should be a talk-through tutoral for this think (or is there one and I missed it)

---

Any way little bug I noticed, they all ways refered to Rice as "He" in the news papers and the ticker tape, come on guys sure she kicks butt in RL but thats just mean

I wouldn't like to 'cheat' in elections. It really ruins the game. I would play easy, easy, easy games until you think you're ready for moderate or tough games (I do this with practically all computer games). As you get used to it, you will understand more & you will be able to have 'strategies'. Good luck..
Against the upper level AI opponents, the game is ruined anyway by their enormous money advantage. I still wouldn't cheat myself, but the game is pretty pointless when you lose by 10 or 20 million votes, but win with 271 electoral votes.
This is just annoying.

I'm tired of losing the popular vote in elections that I control from beginning to end. The game needs a ceiling and a floor of support within an individual state. The 80-20 results in states where I don't advertise are unrealistic and hurt the realism of the results.

If you read my post about the electoral college, you see kerry winning more votes but loses cause of the electoral college. That is wrong how kerry would lose even though more people voted for him.

Actually our President is chosen by representatives from each of the states based on how many representatives each state has plus two (for the senators). Popular vote has nothing to do with the presidential election, other than to guage how many representatives vote for each candidate.

Actually, the electoral college voted for every president until the 6th president. That means G.W. Washington up to the presidency of John Quincy Adams (who actually lost the election, and cheated to win...)

Yea Baby! After my 30th try, I kicked Wesley Clark's butt! Errr and I gave my character a few "extra" points
Actually I gave myself 9 points above and beyond what the normal custom character gets.

T Roosevelt took his big stick to LBJ and the electoral college--
Electoral votes: TR 273 LBJ 265
Popular vote: TR 64,989,000 LBJ 80,993,000

I have screenshots of the exit poll and map if anybody is interested--I'm not bright enough to figure out how to post them here
I beat him after three tries, but if LBJ is this hard to beat, I can't imagine how hard the others are. Next up, Woodrow Wilson.

I've played two games online so far and so far I've won as Reagan (going up against Chole) 394-144 and the second time the host was a Republican so I picked FDR (he was Arnold) and I won 422-116.

I would've won by even more but the game wouldn't respond to me building HQ's or making ads at about week 25. I'd click create or build and it would do nothing. So after week 25 I just spent my time making speeches and sending out operatives. I was winning like 450-80 or so but since I couldn't build HQ's or ads in states I wasnt able to keep some of the more traditional Republican states like the Dakotas. With the exception of 3 states, I won every state east of Texas though.

I think it's a TERRIBLE strategy to pick a Republican from a heavily Democrat state like NY or CA and to be a Democrat from Texas or some other Republican state.

The reason for it is that it is very easy to steal someone's homestate. The guy I was playing in the second game had Arnold so he was from CA and with a little work, a spin doctor and a few ads I was able to win California by like 20 points. The worst part for him was that he had to answer my TV and radio ads so he spent money and stamina defending (unsuccessfully) his home state when he could've picked a candidate from a state like Texas which would've made it much tougher if not impossible (thus I wouldnt try) to steal his home state.

The trick to challanging someone's homestate (if they are in a state that is traditionally swinging towards your party) is to start early before they get a 30 or 40 point lead in it. If you build your HQ there and plop down a newspaper or radio ad you will give them a run for their money.

Best advice I can give to all of you is to pick your candidate and his VP from states that are solidly yours or swing states like PA or OH. It's a bad strategy to be NY or CA Republican. If you do it in an online game against me I will eat you alive like I did these two people.

This is with 2 custom characters with a few extra points. Me and John McCain

I'm reposting my pictures

No special characters... just kickin' Ford's heiney! I got a load of money initially with major hq upgrades and then with millions in the bank, Ford just couldn't keep up.
Good job. BTW: Will you post the popular vote map type.... the one showing the states...
We disagree.

I think it is a far better strategy to be a Republican from a swing state or NY or California simply because if you flip those states to you, you win. Being from a state is only equal to an awareness bonus, plus a free HQ. Who needs a free HQ in Texas? Who needs an awareness bonus in a state that will end with 100% awareness anyway? A home state is not a significant advantage, so why not take it somewhere where the high initial awareness can increase fundraising? Those states are New York and California.

I have the screen shot but don't know how to paste it here. My first game had Bush 269 Kerry 269. The computer declared Bush the winner.

My first win, I don't know how you guys do it. What brought me on top where early victories in high quality states like California, Texas, and Maryland (what do you mean Maryland isn't a high quality state? you don't understand the power of the crab!). Later I attack his high quality states like PA with a smear campain that quickly brought him down.
