Newbie game at 8:30pm eastern time Feb 10, 08

Anyone looking for an all newbie game? I am a newbie and I would like to avoid getting pounded into the dirt by veterans(at least for now) so I'm going to host a game tonight(Sunday) at 8:30 PM eastern standard time. Anyone interested, check in at 8:30! The game will not be password protected, and it will have the word "newbie) in the title. My game name is the same as my forum name. I haven't decided on the settings yet. If anyone has any requests put them here in this forum before 8:30.

Well, to everyone that is currently in this newbie alliance, I have a simple request. I wanna play! I stumbled across this post by chance and even though I might be a little better than a brand new player, it would be fun to play. My friend and I comp stomp regularly but don't really have any more people to play with. We don't care for playing against other people for many reasons (stress level, dropping, poor sports, etc.) Anyways I don't know if this is the only way you guys keep in touch or not but let me know.

p.s. Just so you know: Our time zone is AZ, we both have very strong pc's and excellent internet, and our game ours vary but mostly are night owls.

Game result: Pogue got beat on by the AI and we couldn't save him. But he was hosting! I saved and tried to re-host, but never saw Neo after that :(

Nevertheless, I felt I had been close to turning the tide, so I reloaded in single-player and left Neo as a non-player and took on the AI. It's 0200hrs now, but I'm pleased to say we won (and you even kept your planet Pogue!).

Hope to do it again sometime.

1. I saw your game reload's name, El Tea, but when I tried THREE times to join, after a waiting period, I always got the message that I had been "disconnected from the game server". Then, your game's name disappeared from the list, and you did not reply to my queries from the lobby. My hypothesis was that something on your end made it impossible that you host, because I have had no waiting and no problem rejoining Pogue's games -- on two reloading occasions. Anyway, as I had stated during the last minute of the game, with Pogue gone, since it was past 11 pm, my enthusiasm to "work" towards a victory for a few hours more was low : I only accepted, El Tea, because you insisted. But when I saw that I could not join your reload connection, and that you did not answer me in the ICO chat after that your game's name had disappeared, I concluded that you had seen my can't-connect message and that you had left. No need to cast a frown  :(  : I really tried on THREE occasions to rejoin, but it was obvious to me that there was a technical obstacle on your end. Anyway, without Pogue, considering the hour, my enthusiasm was very low.

2. So you won ! Without Pogue, without my assistance : it is your well earned victory, then. I don't see it as a "we won". When I left the game, there was this big concentration of yellow and green ships next to Pogue's very weakened Homeworld. That's when I wrote on the in-game chat that it was going to be "work". I'm very surprised that you did it all by yourself : for a guy who claimed that he "suck[ed]" (see post #64, above), I can really say that it was obvious from early on that you were the best player. If you succeeded in finishing the game all by yourself, that strenghtens the impression that you are far from being the n00b that Pogue and I admit to be.

3a. My biggest mistake was to underestimate the lethal threat to Pogue's Homeworld. My main fleet remained at a central location as a defensive strategic reserve, while you and Pogue were fighting jointly near his Homeworld. I wanted to secure our (= yours and mine) rears (notably against Green) while you and Pogue were collaborating : I really believed that you two had things under control.

3b. But my mistake is somewhat lessened by the fact that you and Pogue ignored me totally, on in the in-game chat, for a long while : your messages were for each other, and you never asked me for anything. That confirmed my impression that you two had the situation under control, so I remained in a defensive posture. Suddenly, when it was getting too late, one of you called for my help on the chat (at last!). I did not hesitate : I launched my defense fleet towards Pogue's Homeworld, where my arrival made the difference and forced Yellow to retreat.

3c. I am sorry to say that if I put 3a and 3b on the two platters of a scale, I feel that 3b has more weight : you two ignored me for too long on the in-game chat, leaving me in the dark, and creating the impression that you had the situation under control. I admit that I arrived a little late, but nobody asked me to do anything for a long while. I did not mind being left behind as a passive defense because I am very defensive by nature : it is my most important quality and fault in every RTS games. (My 3 planets were in the process of being protected by over 20 Gauss cannons each -- upgraded and enhanced Gauss. I was building a 2nd defense fleet at my Homeworld.) I hope that it will not anger you two guys if I tell you that you should have asked for my help much sooner. You gave me the impression that you were having fun in your corner of the Universe (near Pogue's Homeworld) and that I was not invited to the party. (I'm not sour and bitter about that, since I prefer to manage defenses in the rear than to jump into the front-line offense -- but communicating more with your other team8 would have been helpful.)

4. I enjoyed a "fast" gamespeed. It was much easier to manage than I believed. Games, on ICO, should not go on below "fast".

5. You were a very competent and trustworthy team8, El Tea, but next time, please, don't try to do it (like protecting Pogue) all by yourself : ask for help. But since you ultimately won that game all by yourself, I guess that you might find my a posteriori wish somewhat trivial and moot.

Sorry about the frown Cyber. Looking back at my text, it looks like I was implying you left me hanging (or something to that effect). I had no idea why you weren't joining...but it could have been any number of reasons. My guess is that my router made it a problem. I hadn't tried hosting to that point. The frown was meant to indicate a "too bad" feeling, not "Damn Cybermage" :)

I will now fill this post with happy faces to undo the frown. :)

Or not. Smileys are lame. ;)

It really was only my third game, but I seem to have some of the basics down. Comms were a huge issue. I thought you were monitoring our talking...I didn't realize you were waiting for a specific invitation to come help. Looking back, I can see how that would happen. This goes back to the planning stage where I now feel that even against the AI, voice chat makes the game better. I think I messaged about Pirate bounty turning against us about 8 times and singlehandledly re-directed them away from myself, you, and Pogue before you finally let me know that I was actually doing the team a disservice by taking away a levelling chance for our cap ships. It's just too darn easy to miss a voice chat in the thick of the action.

Personally, I don't think of what I did after the game as relevant other than it was neat and I thought it put a "cap" on the evening's game. I just thought you guys might be interested. Reloading like that may have changed how the AI acted. I feel like we might have been able to save Pogue, but it would have been a slog for him for a while. Next time, to capitalize on the extra brainpower, I might be inclined to surrender a border world or two and let a teammate take them so they can manage them instead of me if they're out of worlds.

Fast game was easy enough to manage. I too was surprised. I'd like to try this again (although I have company for the rest of the weekend. I'm not really free again until next Saturday, sadly.

Good game guys.

Saturday Noon.

1a. Thanks for the lengthy reply, LT. Yep, that's what must have happened : your router rejected me -- because I tried 3 times. I, also, am behind a router. I have had no problem joining Pogue's games, but I feel somewhat certain that I could not host. I don't know much about router configuration, and the threads dedicated to that, on the forum, appear very easy stuff for the IT experts writing advice, but us "lazy" (a recurring word they used on one thread) gamers find router configuration an awesome task.

1b. When Pogue was hosting new games or save-game reloads, I have experienced no problems whatsoever joining his games, and no lag or crash has ever occurred (in Pogue's games).

2. Concerning the pirates, I eventually became the one who financed the outbidding to redirect the pirates towards Green, because that comp (not Yellow) was probing the center, near my Homeworld. When the pirates attacked him, I followed in a second wave to weaken him further : never lost one single frigate in those pre-emptive, defensive raids.

3a. My impression is that you two guys did not ask for my help soon enough. I somewhat monitored the situation around Pogue's Homeworld (and I could have spent more attention time there), but since you guys were not asking any help (in fact, you were not talking to me about anything while you were busy against Yellow), I just waited in a central, defensive posture -- with the intent of managing a rear-guard defense against a possible green surge. (I have been "burned" by the A.I. in a few single-player games : nothing is going on, and you go to sleep, and suddenly a huge A.I. armada surges towards your Homeworld.) I was wary of a green foray against my Homeworld, and possibly, against yours (bypassing my planets). I wanted to guard our rears against that while you were sending your ships towards Pogue's region (I often saw pale blue ships flying by!)

3b. I simply could not conceive that the two of you were not able to handle the situation. Consequently, I didn't want to jump-in to do some vain overkill, leaving my Homeworld open for a green counter-attack.

4. In conclusion, it is certain that I am too cautious and defensive in all the RTS games that I play, but then, I should be guided, in-game, by my team8s. Next time : don't hesitate to tell me what to do (if I can't, I will then say why.) I don't put any vain pride in playing those games.

I thought of asking you for help earlier but I figured your silence meant that you were busy putting out your own fires. Besides, it seemed like we did have the situation under control a number of times, just to find out moments later that the problem was even worse than we thought.

I think I expand too quickly. You might be a turtler(is that a word?) but your method at least keeps you alive. I get on a roll and don't stop til I find out I've overextended myself. I'm going to try and curb that reflex in my next game. At least I had my economy in much better shape this game than the last, except for at the end when I was all busted up anyway.

By the way, I don't know when I'll be hosting again. Sunday night would be good because I do not have to work on Monday so I can play as long as necessary, assuming I live that long. I might host one tonight on a whim, but I'm not going to plan anything. Anyone who wants to play Sunday, let me know. As far as tonight is concerned, if you want to play just check here this evening, and either I'll be here or I won't. ;)

1. Nope, I had no fire to put out. I was simply being my usual self : the quiet, content turtle.

2. I do not seek to expand too fast and too much. I seized, early on, the 2 planets next to my Homeworld (one at the "top", one at the "bottom"), and then, I stopped to "turtle". Anyway, the other adjacent systems were not available : most could not be colonized, and LT was my nearby neighbour (at the "bottom").

3. My 3 systems brought in enough credit/metal/crystal revenues (because I had researched the resource-collection techs to the max I could with 2 civil labs) : I never experienced any shortfall of the 3 resources. Why then would I go out and capture other resource-generating rocks ?!

4. I invested a lot in Research (I had 4 military labs + 2 civil labs) and Defense (I must have built almost SIXTY upgraded and enhanced Gauss cannons on my 3 systems). I could execute frigate spamming to pop-up a backup defense (to complement the Gausses), with a few capital ships, in case Green had decided to fall on my Homeworld (in the same manner Yellow did on yours).

How many Gauss cannons had you built in your Homeworld system ? Did you research all of the upgrades for the Gausses ?

5. I am fully aware that skilled Humans would eventually bust my turtle-shell, but against the comps, my defensive turtling usually buys me a lot of time.

6. I did not lose one single capital ship, and I would be surprised if I lost more than 3 or 4 frigates in the whole game !! That's because I am very cautious in the offensive commitment of my fleets, and because I research the most ship upgrades I can before engaging my fleets in heavy combat. (When I arrived at your Homeworld, my fleet was not really huge, but its ships were boosted by a lot of offensive and defensive upgrades.)

Of course, skilled Humans would try to overwhelm me before I had the time to do all that research and upgrading -- but I have no intention of playing against Humans anytime soon.

7. Even though I have to get up at 6 am on Monday morning, I could play until about Midnight on Sunday evening.

Tonight, I will check this thread : I'm in for a 3 to 4 hour game. (My wife will be busy watching those DVDs of Xena : Warrior Princess I bought her for St Valentine's -- what a great investment that was !   ).

8. In CONCLUSION, in an all-human team, I see my rôle as corresponding to the one of a kind of Guard Reserve: 1) the defense of a team's "rears" (when the map makes that possible) + 2) a strategic reserve for offensive or defensive backup, if called upon ;p (like when I finally arrived at Pogue's Homeworld and turned the tide -- even if it was somewhat already too late).

W A R N I N G :

The forum will be down for maintenance, Sunday, from 8 am (EST) until Monday morning.

Consequently, Pogue, we will have to meet on ICO, Sunday evening, without having checked first on this thread.

I will look for your game, on ICO, Sunday evening, after 7:55 (EST).

I suggest that you then use, as password, the one we employed yesterday (which started by a m). LT knows it. If Bhruic is available, we should give it to him before tomorrow morning (by a forum PM?).
Well in that case if anyone wants to play tomorrow night at 8:00 pm eastern time, chime in tonight and I'll PM you the password.
Once more, i'd love to. That't make it a five V. Five (humans verses AI's), correct?
@ POGUE > I'm chimin' in now, dude. Gimme that password -- pronto !

@ Joe's Momma > TEN players in a game ?! I don't think it's even possible.

What is certain is that I will not participate in any Human vs. Human game -- FFA or team-based.
well joe, that would make it a 3v3 for now. Me you and mage. I will accept up to five players though, so there is plenty of time for two more people to sign up if they'd like. If it stays 3v3 I'll go with one star, if we play 4v4 or 5v5 it'll be 2 stars. I'll PM you the password now.
Mage, it's the same password as last night's game.
Thanks, Pogue : it's the Tom Cruise F-14 password.

Might you be playing tonight ?
I'm not sure if I'll be playing tonight yet. I gotta see what's going on first.
Let's have a 2 v 1 : me + comp against you.

P.S. (08:08 PM) > I guess it's no-game tonight ! Too bad my challenge scared you off, Pogue.  :HOT:
Me too.

Perhaps their Sunday8am-to-Monday9am forum-maintenance announcement was a general statement to give themselves breathing-room.

This particular Sins forum might then be only down a few minutes or hours within that general window.

@ Joe > Are you in for Pogue's game tonight at 8 PM (EST) ? Did he send you the password by forum PM ?
About tonight's game...I can't guarantee it will be exactly at 8:00 pm. Got the mother-in-law coming over for dinner. It's an early dinner so we should be OK but I can't say for sure. If I have to push the time back a little I'll leave a message if the board is working.
If the board is not working, I will regularly check on ICO, starting at 8 PM. But I have to get up at 6:15 AM : I do not want to play beyond (about) 00:00 (EST).
__________________________________________________

It is 5:15 PM (EST) now. The forum has not been interrupted all day.

@ Pogue :

If you want a fast game, possibly playable in one sitting (tonight), here are a few suggestions :

1. One star + relatively few planets
2. Fast speed + fast research + maximum starting resources

There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest for our game, on this thread. So be it : if it's only the two of us, it will make the game easier to manage (and any future reload of a save-game file more easy to negotiate and execute).

The more Humans you have in a game, especially strangers with whom you have never played, the more you are exposed to lagging or unstable Net-connections, and to people leaving because they lose patience or interest.

At the moment, we do know that Pogue Mahone, Bhruic, El Tea, and CyberMage are trustworthy and do have fast, stable Net-connections -- when you are the host !

We were lucky : no lag, no crash -- in about eleven hours of total gameplay.
I think it's going to be me you and joe momma. I'm OK for 8pm, we'll be able to start on time. If it ends up just being the three of us we'll play on one star.

I'm fine with fast speed, research and max resources.
07:33 PM.

OK. I'll be around, on ICO, after 07:55.

At last, you got around to include a picture of yourself !

We can still see "no photo" below the pic : that's because its size is not near enough the maximum limit of 50 x 50. I had to use XP's Paint program to blow-up the size of my PSI icon to 48 x 48, to cover the "no photo" label. Try it.
Nah I don't really care if it says no photo under it. That there is Pogue Jr.

Joe Momma hasn't checked in yet today. We'll give him some time in case he's a little late like the other day.
