Brad - Can we can get an update on not-MoM?

Any chance we can get an update as to what is going on with the 4X fantasy game team?

Brad - Any chance we can get an update as to what is going on with the 4X fantasy game team? The last info I know of about the progress is -

"Most of our game development team is working on a new fantasy strategy game with a 2009 release date; public beta next year. It’s a turn-based game with tactical combat which is also turn-based. One could describe it as part Master of Magic, part Populous and part X-Com. We’ve developed a pretty extraordinary graphics engine for it. I wish I could take credit for it but the stuff’s way beyond my meager capabilities; the engine team we’ve put together over the last couple of years is just amazing" - Brad

The thing I would most like to know is how your 'vision' for this game is different then MoM?

AOM:SW was not complex either however it was a solid stratagy game while MoM though good was not up to par. And as far as the hexes go I would like the option to toggle them on or off. I would always have them on but that is how I perfer to play.

I tried the Dom3 demo, and I didn't really care for it. I may give it another chance, sometime.

Am I the only one playing Fantasy Wars? I just picked it up last week, and it's fantastic, IMO. It borrows heavily from Fantasy General, a game which I know by reputation only.

It's turn-based, tactical combat on a hex map with a high-fantasy theme. If you like turn-based games, you should really, really check out the demo.

I own both Dom2 and Dom3 and am generally a big fan of the series. It has just the right balance between the epic feel (world-wide rituals, huge armies, summoning, eras, number of players...) and heroism (leaders can be equipped with self-forged weapons, armour, trinkets..., assassins, spies...).

The interface isn't the best ever, granted, but you have to give several bonus points for running natively on windows (incl. vista), linux, mac, solaris... pretty much any OS you can think of. Without needing a VM! And users of different OS can play in the same game, it features a command-line server component for processing turns, meaning you can have a server running 24/7, players doing their turns and once all turns are in, the server generates the next turn. Then each player can login, play their turn, etc.

To be honest, the game is more for MP than SP, as the AI is a bit lacking. Still, great fun and one of the first games I install on a new computer. Also, no CD-check once your key is entered.

The demo only scratches the surface with it's turn limit and research up to level four. On smaller maps, that's ok, but usually that's when thing only start to get interesting. While we're on the subject of maps: There are high quality pre-made ones, you can easily import your own, randomly generate one or generate one and then tweak it with an easy to use interface to your liking.

Really, the only drawback is the interface, but you get used to it pretty quickly. If you're looking for a good indie game to fill your fantasy TBS craving, look no further than Dom3. ;)

As long as we're asking for updates, how about an update on Society? On a scale from one to ten, how cancelled is it?

Speaking of updates, Dom3 just got a new update and it adds a new late era faction.

Hope everything is going well on 'NotMoM.' While I enjoyed AoW: Shadow Magic, for me, MoM was just way more fun...there was some element in the game that just 'clicked' for me and sent it way out ahead of the rest...even games that came later. I'm still pissed at FASA for getting them to quit work on MechLords...that would have been another game that I wore out. At least we have DosBox and can still play MoM now. Well, hope we get to hear more news on the fantasy game...interesting you guys mentioned X-Com in there as well. Keep up the good work!

God, you guys are making me depressed. I miss MoM so much, last time I tried to install it/play, nothing worked :(. Almost makes me want to buy a really crappy old machine with the old windows software to play it :p.

Can't wait for the Not-MoM beta from Stardock. Imagine picking 3 games from my "all time" hall-of-fame list: Populous, xcom, Master of Magic...omg... My biggest fear here is that just by listing those, my expectations are already so high, it might be impossible to come within eyesight of it.

Ah well, i'll buy it regardless...Just part of my "Support Stardock" long-term design, I buy everything they release in the strategy arena. Wonder if they will release a rpg in the future...

I've been quite hopeful of the resurgence of indie developers that has been happening lately...Specially since a few seem to be quality, and indie games generally focus on gameplay over "flash". I like a little meat to my games ;). Hopefully a number of these indie companies will team up with Stardock, given your insanely good distribution method...Not to mention the *right* copyright / after-release-support stance.

-Fernando - Software Architect who wanted to do games but sold out to the big money

p.s. Wearing "business casual" to wall street every day isn't as bad as it sounds! I do miss the good old Carnegie Mellon days though!

Me either! My credit card is just sitting here, waiting to fork over my hard-earned money for the pre-order. You hear that Stardock? Money, just for you! Just announce the game and get that beta coming. I don't care if only one button in the entire GUI works at this point, I wanna click it! ;)

Brad's said he'd love to do a Baldur's Gate 2 style RPG at some point. Mustn't distract him from the more important task of the fantasy 4X game though...

The expectations thing can bite you sometimes; I waited *years* for MoO3 and never much liked the final version.

No offense to X-Com fans, but I'm hoping any similarities NotMoM ends up having are optional or minor ones. I never really liked driving tatical combat, although I did take the helm if a fight looked tough in MoO2.

My credit card is just sitting here

Between this dev project and the TA beta, I broke down and bought TotalGaming tokens. If I've figured rightly, I saved money on TA and will get both NotMoM and its first expansion at a discount. But my math skills are mostly Excel-based, and I didn't actually run numbers...

Try DosBox -- I'd never play a dos game without it. (And those Dos games that won't work in it... I'm waiting untill they do, because windows probably won't play them, either. And that includes XCom:A these days :( )

Well when you guys start selection alpha testers for once pick me. I feel so neglected since I have never been considered worthy for anything from SD over the years and I have been around since the Usenet days of Frogboy.

Christ, I'm likely the only fan who spends money trying to get people to try SD products. Now if that is not love I dont what is...

Well, there is at least another drawback, depending where your live: it isn't available in Europe and there isn't any full download version available. So it can be costly with overseas shipping (11$) and custom taxes.

will the game be as big in scope and depth as Dominions 3 the Awakening???
Ahhh, my kingdom for a magical measuring stick that assesses "scope", "depth", and "variety of gameplay"!! :D

The Dominions series is a great game system, once you pull yourself up the rather formidable learning curve. It's so open-ended, you can wander lost in the forests of gameplay for weeks without figuring out what leads to success. But it's a great game series.

It doesn't have the polish of most major releases, but the development team is a 2-man group, so it's hard to fault them for not pushing up their polygon count! :)

I'm eagerly awaiting Not-MoM. I'm torn between wanting to take part in the beta, and waiting until the game is released in its full-blown glory. If my wife is pregnant by then, I guess I'll probably be waiting until the final release. And then still not playing the game for two years after I buy it!

To help pass the time, anybody who might be interested in TBS Fantasy 4x games, I heartily recommend the free mod "Fall From Heaven 2" for Civilization IV. It's easily downloadable at Fall From Heaven 2 Civfanatics Forum!!

My favorite part of MoM was the ability to customize your wizard and race combo's to fit your playing style. That's why I keep playing GalCivII over and over, I can chose or create a race to maximize how I enjoy playing the game. What MoM and MoO both had that I miss, was the randomness of the spells/technologies available to research. If your researchers didn't stumble upon the path you wanted, you were forced to trade with the AI, or live with the consequences. That randomness played into the spells available in the first three iterations of the Heroes of Might&Magic games. Nothing was more rewarding than seeing "Chain Lightning" pop up as one of the fourth level spells when you upgraded your Mage guilds.

I heartily agree with all that. On the flip side about the mage guilds, if all you ever got for 5th level was the damn elemental summoning spells, you wanted to pull your hair out! I still play Heroes III now and then. Did you know that a bunch of independent developers/players game out with an expansion to it a while back? It was called Wake of the Gods, and was excellent!

There are so many ways to tease you about this paragraph that I'm just going to point out the general possibility and leave it to everyone's imagination. ;-) -drrider

2 years? It may be more like,,, i dunno, I'm working on year 9 now. Any day now i'll get some uninterupted game time, any day. Then again, if you can learn to do those 3AM feedings with one arm and work your mouse with the other, you'll be fine.

I'm kidding of course, you'll get to play, just leave the game on at all times and give it a click whenever you walk by the computer. lol

Brad,
Can we have an update of any kind?

Thanks,

Just take your time and design it right. Eventhough we all want it tomorrow we will all wait for the design to be right (oh god this sounds cliche....)

He said that they hope to announce it in spring. Since summer starts in June it means the possible announcement will be at May 31 at the latest :D
