Brad - Can we can get an update on not-MoM?

Any chance we can get an update as to what is going on with the 4X fantasy game team?

Brad - Any chance we can get an update as to what is going on with the 4X fantasy game team? The last info I know of about the progress is -

"Most of our game development team is working on a new fantasy strategy game with a 2009 release date; public beta next year. It’s a turn-based game with tactical combat which is also turn-based. One could describe it as part Master of Magic, part Populous and part X-Com. We’ve developed a pretty extraordinary graphics engine for it. I wish I could take credit for it but the stuff’s way beyond my meager capabilities; the engine team we’ve put together over the last couple of years is just amazing" - Brad

The thing I would most like to know is how your 'vision' for this game is different then MoM?

guess the answer is no.

My guess is that Brad has either not seen this thread or that he is getting crushed working on the TA expantion. At some point he will respond...... I just have no idea when.

I'm sure there will be some sort of comment on the site here whenever we do release more about it. Until then, all I can say is look around for other previously given tidbits and be patient

Just treat me and other gamers like 3 year olds. Give us a lot of attention in small bits and we will be happy. Ignore us and we get cranky and throw temper tantrums. *Grin*

Have a good Turkey day all!

I hope the combat is similar to Age of Wonders Shadow magic, I loved the turned based combat in that.

Heck, maybe it'll even be better.

Have you played Master of Magic?
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic was the closest game to a sequel to MoM but it wasn't as good.
I hope StarDock's MoM clone uses the hex tiles like in AoW:SM but keeps the feel of MoM.

I'm fairly certain we're not using hexes...

I'm guessing this means "not using hexes for the map" but we might still be using them on the map...

Still sitting back quietly waiting for this title as I have been for what seems like years...

Dungeon Keeper - Great idea, bad game.
Syndicate Wars - Great game.

My favorite part of MoM was the ability to customize your wizard and race combo's to fit your playing style. That's why I keep playing GalCivII over and over, I can chose or create a race to maximize how I enjoy playing the game.

What MoM and MoO both had that I miss, was the randomness of the spells/technologies available to research. If your researchers didn't stumble upon the path you wanted, you were forced to trade with the AI, or live with the consequences.

That randomness played into the spells available in the first three iterations of the Heroes of Might&Magic games. Nothing was more rewarding than seeing "Chain Lightning" pop up as one of the fourth level spells when you upgraded your Mage guilds.

Hexes are not so great visually. But you can make a hex play field entirely out of squares tilted at an angle, which looks awesome imo.

Yes I agree that AoW was kinda in the same genre, but it was not nearly as good as MoM. Part of MoM appeal was that it wasn't needlessly complex.

Hexes don't have to be visible, and so long as they don't have the directional problems square-based maps like Civ have I don't care what they use.

AoW:SM's combat sucked balls. Reducing units to one figure removed 75% of the MoM combat's awesome: the per-figure bonuses instantly became far less important and the tweaking used to distinguish units less interesting. That said, I doubt Stardock is going to churn out a clone so uninspired, and at very least I'd expect dynamic stack sizes. Hasn't Brad talked about a relatively large battle scale before?

I would say to anyone waiting for this yet to be named title, go check out Dominions 3 to hold your fantasy fix for the time being. An extremely fun and addictive 4x fantasy TBS strategy game. Well supported and the community is really great. But be warned of 3 caveats. First, don't expect ground breaking graphics (which is actually a plus so one can play on a fairly old laptop even), secondly the game is quite deep. Perhaps too deep for the meek. Lastly, it will suck the bleeding life out of you. You will be left wondering where so many hours have gone.

Dominions 2 was a failure in my eyes. Sure I only played the demo but that was all I needed....

When I entered the game and had created my God/Avatar/Wizard/Hero/whatever I had to click on menus and stuff and I didn't understand anything....
The games forum on the developer site (Swedish as I am :CONGRAT:) had a thread from the devs about how you play the game....and it wasn't a small post either....

If I start a game and I can't immedietly start playing then the game fails. Even GalCiv 2, which is considered pretty beginner unfriendly, is a game I could start playing immedietly and that says ALOT!

I don't know if Dominions 3 improved the presentation but there the problem was that you can't micromanage the battles. I like HoMM, AoW and fastpaced RTS & FPS and without great control I quit.

I just certainly hope that Stardocks TBS is closer to MoM and AoW then Dominions and GalCiv....will get depressed if I'm wrong since I'm so looking forward to this game.

I did a little reading and installed the demo so I could see part of the manual. A couple of reviews made clear that this would be a problem for some players, but it is also attractive to others (like me). Kind of like how a durian fruit can split a crowd into folks fighting for a share and folks fighting to get away from the stench.

I think Dominions 3 might be a game for me, but I'm not likely to buy it unless I finally get tired of GC2 before NotMoM is released. The complexity looks really engaging, but the interface is clumsy (functionality, I don't care about whether the grpahics are super-pretty).

At the moment, I have really high hopes that Stardock will give us a game that takes all it can from MoM without a licensing deal and builds on all they've learned about GUI design and AI design with GC2.

I have Dom3.
Great and deep game, but not for someone who wants to jump right in.
The game has a steep learning curve and it can take awhile before you become comfortable with your race, let alone, all the races, which are quite different from every other game-race we know.
Lots of learning-experience to be had in this game.

I also agree that AoW:SM had a great tactical battle system.
The only thing that was missing was some kind of "logistics" mechanic.
Each army could simply hold up to 8 units and most of the time this meant the lvl 4's would simply push out the lower lvlv units after a while.

In the upcoming fantasy game, I'd like to see some kind of "logistics" mechanism like we have in Galciv2.
If you would implement that mechanic into AoW:SM you could have some awesome possibilities.
Lower lvl units would have a longer "lifespan" as you could easily fill your "logistics 10 army" with (for instance) five lvl 1 units ( whicht might each count 2 against your logistics cap) or with two lvl 4 units ( which might each count 5 against your logistics cap)

Just to say, looking forward to the upcoming game.

I really like Dom3. The UI is not bad, it just needs explained once.

There is a real 300 page manual and you should spend the time to read it.

C'mon there are 50+ factions, 600+ spells, and it supports 20 player multiplayer matches.

Yeah, I definitely enjoy Dom3. There is indeed a nice sized learning curve but to me, that's part of the fun. The pure depth and tactical strategy involved is amazing not to mention the many races, spells, items, etc. No two games are ever nearly the same. Once you think you've mastered the AI, which I still have not, the multiplayer fun begins and you'll see new strategies you had never even thought of through hosted games and PBEM.

Not to mention I can play it on my laptop as there are no cutting edge graphics to deal with.  :D  Just pure strategy and depth.  :CONGRAT:

Dominions 3 apparently vastly improved the interface over Dom2. It does sound like that was fairly awful.

Dominions 3 is actually my favourite game ever, I can say quite honestly (and I have played a _lot_ of games). I am sure a lot of people who are fans of GalCiv would enjoy it too - although the game is not so shiny. I highly recommend people try it out. The multiplayer (played one turn a day over the course of several weeks or even months, although people also play "blitz" games on small maps over a few hours) is especially awesome for those who like games with a bit of thought.

Brad obviously likes it too, since he recommended it at one point on these forums (which is how I found it), and Stardock did that promotion with them recently (20% off Dominions with a Stardock code), which brought loads of new people in.

I agree I love Age of Wonders Shadow Magic. I also hope it comes with an editor to allows us to create all sorts of unitls like in Age of Wonders Shadow Magic.

I have played MoM and I perfered AOW:SM over it. It was more customizable and the general feel of AOW:SM in my opinon was much better.
