G'day guys.

I have not been around for a few years.

Thought I would drop by to see if anyone is still alive. |-)

My husband has been trying to track down some of his Air Force buddies and It has been depressing.

So far he has found one suffering dementia and two widows.

Thought escaping into the internet would cheer us up.

The stimulus has been the fact that optic fibre cable is being laid down our street, so we should get a fast internet soon.

Hey!!! Been a while!!!! you got the NBN in your area already!! I'm in Newcastle ans still waiting....provided Abbot doesn't get in and ruin it all!
I don't think any of us are still playing, lest not in any serious way. I fire the game up every few weeks or so and mess about, no MV games though...

I read that Stardock has the rights to the 'ole classic Star Control, so maybe we will fight another day in that realm!?

Hi Neilo.

Might have known you would be around.

We are not connected to the NBN as yet, but it is tantalizingly close.

It would be a disaster if Abbot got in and said we had to use our existing copper connection.

I can't be bothered searching the site.....is there any sign of Gal Cicv3 ?

I am playing around with Civilization 5 at the moment.

We are thinking of buying one of those All In one computers. I like the look of the Tsohiba...It looks like an Apple.

Hubby will probably be swayed by that boring technical stuff.

Nope.

I might be able to advise a good custom build if I knew a budget.

Hehe Embird...yeah i lurk about from time to time. I dont think a GC3 is cost effective for SD these days. The fact they have sought rights to another space game kind of sounds the death knell for GC i guess. Though i couldnt be happier if i were to be proved wrong.
Hate to say it but i think Abbot will cruise to a victory...gilliard killed the labor party's chances id say.

Galacticruler5000 . Already bought the Toshiba all in one. But thanks for the offer.

Unfortunate it has WIn8.

I should ask this on the technical thread, but is there anyway to use your existing email and Skype, or do you have to go to a Hotmail email ? Changing our email address is not an option.

If not then we will be getting rid of Win8 and installing Win7.

Maybe a dual boot system would be the answer ?

Hmmm....might want to either sell or return it then if Fail8.

if you ever do decide to switch:

go get Ccleaner, and do the drive wipe and manually install a windows 7 copy.

No reason you can't. If you were using outlook express as your mail client before and use POP3, you'll need to switch to another client as the native Win8 client only supports IMAP, though the options are buried. If you were using webmail of some kind then that is completely unchanged.

Skype has a Win8 client also.

If you want to stick with the desktop we do have some apps that can help with that too.

Different genres. Don't count GalCiv out just yet. :)

Thank you Kryo.

Especially for the link. I haven't tried the process yet, but it looks hopeful.

My computer is in, being set up as a dual boot system for win7 and win 8.

Microsoft offers no help for anything. They just refer you to other people who have the same problem. Users have to rely on kind souls like yourself to provide solutions to problems.

I did a search for the email problem but I did not find the site you referred me to.

Thanks Kryo.

I am looking into Egosoft's  X-rebirth space trading/exploration/combat game. The visuals look spectacular.

Dont write off Win8 just yet. I use it and with just a few bucks worth of Stardock products you would never know its not win7 till you look under the hood.
Start8 is worth every penny, brings back start menu and more importantly allows you to boot direct to desktop. I have not seen the metro screen in weeks.
This way it looks like 7, but i have all the under bonnet goodness that win8 brings to the table.

Best 5 bucks (iirc) i ever spent.
I' ll check out Egosoft's game....

Don't tease me Kryo!!!! ;)

Thanks for the encouragement Neilo.

I bought a magazine called "Tricks. Fixes. and Apps for Windows 8. It tells you, amongst other things how to bring back the start menu and screen.

I haven't got the computer back yet. Hopefully tomorrow.

I will still have the email problem. It wants me to set up a Hotmail account for email.

I don't use any feature of 8 that requires my email. I still use office 07 and just port my isp and gmail accounts into outlook. If you use Start8, you wo'nt ever be using metro anyway. I don't believe ive used a metro app in months, so no need to mess with the native client.
In fact i never have, i have no email registered to it at all. Grab Thunderbird as your email client?

Thanks Neilo.

I have no idea what you are talking about. :|

I will look at Thunderbird as an email client.

Thunderbird is great.

I will be using that from now on.

Loved the way it automatically used the correct settings for my provider.

Looking into Start8 now.

:)
Thunderbird is the FF of email clients i reckon.

You will not be disappointed with Start8.

Hi folks!

Yeah, I have Win 8 on my gaming computer, but not on my regular media computers.  I find that web surfing is easier with Vista and Win 7, but Win 8 is a nice gaming platform.  I'm looking forward to Win 8.1 later this month.  Hopefully, it'll have some of the lost functionality back.  If not, I'm ok with Vista and 7.

I haven't reinstalled GalCiv 2 onto my gaming computer yet, but might sometime later. Definitely looking forward to GalCiv 3 if it turns out to be more than vaporware.

Oh, and multiplayer FTW! :)

Hello my old partner in crime! Time for Tyranny 2.0 GC3 style i reckon!!
I have WIN8 on my pc and i couldn't be happier. I use SD's Start8 so as such i never ever see the metro screen. I have full win7 functionality but with the under hood goodness that win8 brings to the party.

Now...GC3, that trailer...oh myyy!

Yep, the Tyranny lives!  The FAQs say it'll be some sort of asynchronous multiplayer so we can be on at different times.  I'd think we could start off as a coop and go to adversarial later, if we want.  I wonder if team play will be in there?

A new Metaverse is mentioned that will allow the AI to learn from us mere mortals. That'll be real cool.  :)

As to Win8,  I'm waiting to see what 8.1 will bring before going with Start8.  If 8.1 is too little too late, I'll grab Start8 pretty quickly.

Hmm ... GC3

I would swear I had read somewhere, within the past 24h, that a more primitive version of this function was incorporated into the GC2 MV-but I can't seem to find it, and I could have been extrapolating from incomplete data.

It's great to see you all again.

Hiya Mumble!! Hey there SS!!!!

Yeah co-op would be the way to go initially i would think to Motti. Team play would be awesome, though getting 9 or 10 players all in one game with differing time zones might make for one slow game, but it would be cool!!

I actually think the addition of MP to GC3 might stem the tide of score mongering. MP would be our focus (i'm assuming) so just winning, as opposed to winning with best score would be the goal.
Interesting to see how it all pans out.

I'm active on the GC3 forums presently and i wonder if it wouldn't hurt to start a Tyranny thread on those forums. It's early days yet of course, but may as well hit the ground running!

It is absolutely great to see you all again!

The idea does seem familiar.  I seem to recall reading something along those lines some years back relating to GalCiv2.

Hopefully, MP will do that.  Playing for score eventually sucked the life out of it.

Yeah, a Tyranny thread would be nice, especially since the Galciv2 forums are largely hidden from the GalCiv3 ones.  There doesn't seem to be a place to put it yet though.  Maybe they'll develop that side more as the game gets developed.
