Empire thread --> The Gerontocracy

The Gerontocracy is here, and the universe will never be the same.

This empire is intended for players over the age of 30, hence the name of the empire. Judging by other threads, that means about 89% of us. For that other 11%, my advice is to hurry up and get older; in the meantime, though, there are plenty of other empires to join, even if they're not nearly as awesome as we are.

Click here to join this empire.

All this time I thought it was the whole illegal alien status and subsequent inability to get a job that ultimately made living in Canada impossible for me.

You need to find a good Canadian to marry (now available in gay and lesbian, too -- ask your local justice of the peace or participating religious institution for details!)

Please don't mistake the above as some kind of proposal; if you are my clone, as I suspect, that would be far too narcissistic, even for me.

I never could get the hang of having to go to separate stores for beer and groceries. That's just odd.

Here in Ontario we have separate stores for beer and liquor... and can only get the good beers at the LCBO (govt. run liquor store), whereas the Beer Store (that's the actual name of the company) only has the crap beers, albeit many, many varieties of crap. It's all rather confusing, even if you live here. I'm a beer lover -- beer snob, even -- and I never go the Beer Store. Go figure.

So anyway, ghostwes, if I promise to submit a game before the end of the year can I join the group?

Actually, you can join us regardless. A few people haven't yet submitted games. We're really not that picky about it. So long as you're of age (35+) and don't take yourself too seriously, you'll do fine in this empire.

Not me, I'm Chaotic Evil... says so right in my medals!

Well, heck! I might as well celebrate my decrepitude rather than live in a state of denial. If you'll have me on the terms of my rather busy real life taking precedence, then I would be honored to join. Maybe I will one day be weighted down with many medals.

I suppose that in order be able to submit games I will have to sacrifice Kryo's really nice jewelry mod and that other mod that allows me to have all those nice minor race pictures and logos. Oh well.

Thanks for the great idea. I may have many questions, so bear with me please.

Sure, WSMNN, welcome aboard. You will need to create a character for me to invite.

Not sure about the mod thing. I would think that you could use those mods since they wouldn't affect gameplay, but I'm not really sure. Might want to post a question in the metaverse forum.

I'm a little (OK, a lot) behind on my Metaverse Council reading, but IIRC getting some mod-friendliness is a high priority for many folks. The official Meta rejects all mods (I think b/c there's just too much cheating potential with them).

Cari has added a new checksum file of some sort that theoretically will enable the Altmeta to accept modded games and maintain some sort of apples-to-apples ranking scheme. There's tons to read on the subject over at the Core.

LCBO.... that's right. It's been a while, I'd almost forgotten.

Well, I'm not about to live up in that cold climate anyway, marriage or no. Do you know it actually snowed while I was up there. In "Spring"! I haven't the slightest idea how to drive in a light drizzle, let alone snow and ice all over the road!

Anyway, I tried to log in this weekend and apparently there's a few things I need to figure out first. I generally don't let my Windows go online and I had some problems with my firewall. Then there were problems with logging in. When did gaming get so complicated? Does anyone else remember Bubble & Squeek. Or Hunt the Wumpus?

Olde Manne here, with apologies to Oldstatesman, my moniker was chosen to suite me not to steal from him. I'm 48 and a Canadian so this looks like the empire for me. I've been playing and lurking for about a year and a half on my son's computer, and finally caved a month ago and bought my own version. Not much of a player, just love the gendre and having fun. Been playing strategy games forever and my first computer games on an Apple II many moons ago. I'd love to join the old-timers here. Can I come in.

You don't need to be Canadian to be in the Gerontocracy, heh. I have sent you an invite, Olde Mann. Welcome aboard.

Welcome also to Captain Yar, who someone else must have invited. Good to have you with us in this struggle against, err, youth or something.

IMO, there's no hope struggling *against* youth unless most folks can manage to get themselves sterilized before they reproduce. (I support One Woman, One Child, Until We're Under One Billion World Population World Population Clock)

This Gerontocrat is into struggling *for* Curmudgeons' Rights. If those brats won't stay off the lawn, then they'd better darn well sit still now and then and listen to some stories

I would like to join your esteemed empire...if I can figure out how. I will be 36 in 2 weeks

Hello, spunkrawker. I've sent your character an invite to the empire. Welcome aboard, sir.

And I see you are yet another Canadian! Is GalCiv2 dominated by old Canadians? Weird.

Where are you guys, by the way? I said it above, but I am in Windsor, the armpit of Ontario.

If Windsor represents the armpit ghost... I'd hate to think of where Toronto is anatomically situated(cough).

I concur. I'm currently in Winnipeg, going through our two months of mosquito season before winter hits again. I have lived in almost all of the major centres from Halifax to Victoria, but will admit that after my year in TO I was really ready to leave that part of the country to hardier folk. I have trouble establishing major production planets as they remind me too much of the industrial heartland of southern Ontario!

Now what in the hell is wrong with Toronto???.....oh wait...i guess it is easier to ask what is right with Toronto..

Funny you know, i realize that you are talking about Toronto Canada, but i live in Trono Australia and it seems the reputations are the same......

Finally got my current game completed for 79 K.

It was a real struggle. The Thalians had more planets than me and kept hitting me with scores of ships.
Nearly abandoned the game, but I managed to hang on long enough to research Psyonic missile and from then on, things slowly turned around.
Eventually, I discovered they not only had more planets, they had four times as many.

I am setting up the game that is being used in the team play competition.
Never tried for a tech victory before. It is going to need totally different tactics.
Which is good for me.
I will wait and see if I win and if my score is comparable to the others playing, then I might think about joining a team.

Embird, remember, the beauty of the league structure is that the focus is not on what score you can achieve, but if you are able to achieve the required challenge for that round. It is more more important to win than to win big. High scores are given a bonus but so is the quickest game, a feat you can achieve easily without going for a high score.

That being said, of course join the league when/if you feel ready to do so, just thought i'd point out that scores are not what the league is about, at least that is the intention anyway.

Hope you to see you there.

Isn't there also a penalty for lowest score? If you're going for the fastest game, make sure you don't cancel yourself out with lowest score!

No, your thinking of slowest game. That has a -1 point penalty.

Just completed my current game for the Empire.

A gigantic crippling for 100,450. No milking, finished as quickly as I could.

After a long struggle with Metaverse in an attempt to create a character I can finally ask for admission into this find group of aged gamers.
Praise to the devs for figuring out the Metaverse registration problem!
Although I don't live in Canada like most of the group appears to, I am a Bob and Doug Mackenzie fan as well as a Red Green fan. I live in Ohio (which borders Canada on Lake Erie), and I am 41 which puts me well into the age bracket.
My character's name is Amalric Starstrider.
